Sculpture garden, garden of surprises and deer park. Burghley Horse trials takes place every September. OPEN: March to October Flag Fen Peterborough 18.5 01733 864468 Flag Fen Archaeology Park is home to a kilometre-long wooden causeway and platform Archaeology Park PE6 7QJ miles perfectly preserved in the wetland. 3300 years ago, this was built and used by the Prehistoric fen people as a place of worship and ritual. 60,000 upright timbers and 250,000 horizontal planks are buried under the ground. Harlaxton Manor Grantham 23.6 01476 403013 Built in 1837 Harlaxton’s architecture, which combines elements of Jacobean and Elizabethan NG32 1AG miles styles with symmetrical Baroque massing, renders the mansion unique among surviving Jacobethan manors. The house is now owned by the University of Evansville, Indiana, USA, and is used as their British Campus. OPEN: House and garden guided tours are by appointment only. John Clare Helpston 7.1 miles 01733 253330 Widely regarded as one of the greatest of the English poets, John Clare lived in Helpston for his Cottage PE6 7ED first forty years from 1793 until 1832. The Cottage has been restored, using traditional building methods. Converted into an almshouse for 12 poor ‘bedesmen’ and two women. Visitors can wander through the bedesmen’s rooms, with their tiny windows and fireplaces, and view the former bishops’ Great Chamber with its beautifully carved ceiling cornice. Oakham Castle Oakham 11.9 01572 757578 Oakham Castle was constructed between 1180 and 1190 for Walchelin de Ferriers, Lord of the LE15 6DR miles Manor of Oakham. The Castle is known for its collection of massive horseshoes and is also recognised as one of the best examples of domestic Norman architecture in England. Admission to the castle is free. CLOSED: Tues, Thurs, Sun Stamford’s Stamford 0.2 miles N/A The Eleanor crosses were a series of twelve tall and lavishly decorated stone monuments Eleanor Cross PE9 2RB topped with crosses, of which three survive nearly intact, in a line down part of the east of England. King Edward I had the crosses erected between 1291 and 1294 in memory of his wife Eleanor of Castile, marking the nightly resting-places along the route taken when her body was transported to London. OPEN: For tours on Fridays Things to See and Do St Leonards Priory Stamford 0.5 miles N/A Part of the precinct of St Leonard's Priory, Stamford, a cell of the cathedral monastery of PE9 2EU Durham. Includes the upstanding remains of the nave of the priory church and the buried remains of the north aisle, transepts, chancel and claustral buildings. The Priests House Easton on the 2.7 miles 01832 205158 The Priest’s House is one of the National Trust’s smallest buildings. Located in the village of Hill Easton on the Hill, adjacent to the former Rectory which dates from about 1700. Exhibitions are PE9 3LS manned every Sunday in June, July and August from 2.00pm to 4.30pm. At other times, access to the Priest’s House is obtained between 10am and 5pm by visiting one of the nearby keyholders, whose names are posted on the notice board. Whissendine Whissendine 16.1 01664 474172 One of England’s few remaining fully operational nineteenth-century windmills. Today, fully Windmill LE15 7EU miles restored, it produces plain, strong white and wholemeal flour. The Mill was built in 1809 by the Earls of Harborough of Stapleford Park. Stand in the Manor NG33 5PD room where he used a prism to split sunlight into the colours of the rainbow. From the window you can see the apple tree in the orchard which inspired his theory of gravity. OPEN: Entry to the manor is by timed entry. Site, including coffee shop, gardens and science discovery centre open from 11am to 4.30pm daily. Yew Tre Avenue Oakham 12.8 N/A Clipsham Yew Tree Avenue is a unique collection of 150 yew trees, most over 200 years old. The LE15 7SE miles Avenue was once the carriage drive to Clipsham Hall, the centre of the Clipsham Estate. A small car park gives year-round access to the Yew Tree Avenue. Take the time to step inside and you'll be rewarded with the sight of angels on high in the fifteenth-century roof timbers painted in glorious black, red and yellow. St Mary’s Church Stamford 364ft N/A A parish church lending its name to St Mary's Hill (part of the old Great North Road) on which it PE9 2DS stands. St Martin’s Church Stamford 0.1 miles 01780 753356 The church of St Martin lies on the main route south out of Stamford and was built outside the PE9 2LF medieval town walls. The chapel holds memorials to generations of the Cecil family, many of whom are buried in the burial vault beneath the floor.
