One of the primary objectives of the board of directors for 2016, will be to provide coaches with the support, mentorship and resources available to assist in making this season a success for you, your coaching staff, players and parents.

Within the following pages, you will find an outline of the expectations and responsibilities of a Hornets coach. As part of the expectations, you will be required to attend Coaching Clinics, an on floor practical coaching session, CDLA sponsored certification clinics (if required) as well as, Hornet meetings.

This manual will provide you with a clear objective as a coach. Success will be determined on the development of technical skills, individual tactics, team tactics, team play systems and strategy at different age levels within our association.

It is important to note, that this is a guideline to use as part of your seasonal plan and practice planning, but does not include the basic foundation required to play the game.

Success will continue to be based on the development of players from one season to the next and not on wins and losses alone. The Hornets are committed to providing players an opportunity to enjoy playing the sport they love, in a safe and fun learning environment. The development of individual skills, physical fitness, sportsmanship, team play and social interaction are all common goals shared within the association.

The Board of Directors are dedicated to making your experience as a coach this season a positive one and welcome any input on improving the overall program.

Sincerely,

Hornets Executive Board of Directors

We are proud to continue to partner with ELEV8 to bring you the Hornets Coaching Development Program. The program is solely focused on mentoring you as a lacrosse coach; it is not a certification session. We’ve updated the structure and delivery of the topics to be covered.

We strongly recommend participation in your dedicated session, because as an organization the Hornets believe that taking full advantage of this opportunity will be very beneficial for the players and you as an effective coach. This is an excellent opportunity to continue to grow your knowledge of the game and learn practical game skills no matter the level of experience or education you may have already obtained.

You will receive professional instruction from ELEV8 Coaching Staff, which consist of:

• Geoff Snider, President and Founder of ELEV8 Lacrosse (9 years NLL, 9 years MLL, Philadelphia Wings, Roughnecks, , Team Canada Player and U19 Coach) • Bob Snider, Director of Player Development and Operations. (Team Canada, , Bellarmine University) • Dan MacRae, Instructor. (Calgary Roughnecks, Victoria Shamrocks) • And others . . . Our main objectives include:

1. Introduce correct and proper skill development from basic to advanced skills, theory and strategy in each age category. 2. Identify essential building blocks of practice planning that can be altered to meet the needs of your team. 3. Provide positive and insightful discussion on game situations, practices and player development. Ultimately implementing correct theory, strategy, and skill sets to age appropriate groups to raise the level of play, development and fun had by players.

This year we are offering sessions based on your coaching experience. Each session will run for 3 hours, 2 hours on-floor practice and 1 hour “classroom” discussion.

Session 1: This session provides an energetic approach to basic lacrosse fundamentals. You will learn basic theory and be introduced to a successful coaching framework. This session is ideal for coaches who are new to lacrosse and those that have up to 3 year experience within our organization. You will be able to practice catching and passing and apply basic coaching theory and systems using game examples to prepare you for your upcoming season.

This session will reinforce the basic fundamentals and focus on practical coaching strategies for quality performance and take steps to enhance player development and advanced game knowledge. Expect insightful discussion to increase the Hornet’s competitive edge and provide a greater understanding of the Hornet’s brand of lacrosse. “It is said that it takes 10,000 hours or 10,000 repetitions to master a skill.”

Floor time should be designed to engage every participant consistently. Players do not attend practice to watch others play. Kids enjoy practices when they have fun and they experience improvement in their overall skills.

Keys for a Great Practice: 1. Players must be on time, all the time. Coaches set the standard and lead by example. Parents are encouraged to abide by the guidelines of the team. 2. Basic skill development (catching and passing) should comprise a large part of your floor time. However, it is important to note you can work basic skill development in game-like drills as well. 3. Interaction with each and every player during a practice session is imperative for development. Positive and specific feedback is a key for learning. 4. Execute in practice. Great drills that aren’t executed properly by coaches become ineffective in the development of the player. Execution involves using all on-floor coaches, proper explanation of the drill and the expectations of the coach, having balls spotted in the proper areas, informing players of the whistle sequence (1st whistle begin, 2nd whistle stop, 3rd whistle begins next group) and providing appropriate feedback. 5. To make life easier, name your drills! Players will identify with the name, which will limit on-floor explanation at future floor times. Relate what you do in practice to games and vice versa. 6. Progression drills play an important role in teaching team tactics. Regardless of a player’s skill level, it is your responsibility as a coach to teach every player on your team. When players experience improvement in their skills, no matter what their athletic ability may be, they will continue to participate and return to learn more.

Season Plan: Take the time to develop a plan for the season. This will allow the coaching staff to stay on pace in developing the players throughout the year.

Practice Plans: Practice plans are essential in your preparation. Practice plans allow for total usage of allotted floor times.

1. Practice Plan Format a) Use practice plan sheets to record your plan. b) File your practice plans for easy reference at a later date. c) Prepare a written practice plan that will detail the progression of individual skill and team development. Consider the flexibility that will be required to adapt this plan to the progress of the team and players.

2. Measurable Outcomes for the Plan a) Players of all ages need to know the goals of each practice b) Record information about the outcome of the plan

3. Elements of the Plan a) Practices and drills should be more active than passive b) A well balanced practice contains a warm up, teaching components & technical skill execution, drills under game like conditions, fun elements, competitive activities and a cool down

4. Assign a Coach Specific Responsibilities to Lead a Drill a) Ensure all coaches understand the purpose of the drills so they can provide appropriate feedback for improvement b) All coaches should be engaged in the delivery of each drill

5. Identify Practice Rules a) Use whistles to identify the beginning and end of drills. b) Set timelines for players to be prepared to step on the floor. i.e. 15 minutes prior to the start of practice

6. Proper Illustrations a) Take pride in illustrating good plans and more specifically each drill b) Written descriptions should include details of the drill execution, key teaching points and key execution points

a) Being an effective leader and teacher for your players and coaching staff (or team representatives)

b) Be a model of sportsmanship

c) Delegate responsibilities to players and support staff

d) Develop in your players respect for teammates and officials and themselves

Coach Responsibilities:

1. Foster positive relationships between coaches, teammates, game officials and opponents. Honoring the game means supporting the game’s ROOTS, respect for Rules, Officials, Opponents, Teammates and Self.

2. Be aware of Calgary District Lacrosse bylaws and rules for the 2016 season. Visit the CDLA website www.calgarylacrosse.com > Administration > Rules and Regulations.

3. Review ALA Regulations for the 2016 season Click on the link below: http://secure.pointstreaksites.com/files/uploaded_documents/359/ALA_Regulations_2014v4_3.pdf.

4. CDLA requires teams to provide game results within 24 hours, failure to do so may result in sanctions against your team.

5. Ensure player safety at all times. Players must wear all necessary equipment at practice and games including mouth guards.

6. Acquire a travel permit when playing in any tournament or exhibition game outside the Province of Alberta. (ALA Regulation 14.06 & 14.07).

7. Advise the Hornets Executive Director and Hornet’s Executive when playing in any tournament or exhibition games outside the City of Calgary.

8. Submit copies for all game sheets to the CDLA when travel permits are issued.

9. Immediately report all suspensions and major penalties to the Executives of the Calgary Hornets Lacrosse Association (President, Vice Presidents & Secretary).

10. Only registered players, coaches and assistant coaches or parent volunteers and registered affiliate players (as per CDLA) are allowed on the floor with a team during practices and games unless expressly approved by the CDLA.

11. Identify volunteer positions within the team parent group. Team Manager, Treasurer, Tournament Coordinator, Jersey Parent, Score Clock Operators, etc.

12. Utilize the Team Manager to ensure off-floor duties are accomplished and volunteer commitments are completed.

13. Determine tournament requirements as soon as possible in order to apply and be accepted, along with allowing an opportunity for the team to fundraise if necessary. This includes affiliation rules for Provincials via the ALA.

14. Game jerseys must be in possession of team representative. Players are NOT ALLOWED to keep game jerseys or wear them outside of sanctioned games. (JERSEYS ARE NOT TO BE WORN AT ROUGHNECK GAMES!) 15. Return all team equipment specified at the conclusion of the lacrosse season. All jerseys are to be on hangers (one per jersey), cleaned, all facing the same direction, sequenced from the smallest to the largest number. Goalie equipment must be returned to Hornets in a timely manner.

16. Adhere to the Hornets Mixed Gender Supervision Policy.

17. Ensure your entire team has completed all necessary Code of Conducts (Player, Parent and Coaching Staff).

Refer to CDLA Rule and Regulation 1.15 – Affiliation for more information.

A primary coach is the Head Coach that a player is assigned to or registered with. An Affiliate coach is a coach that is requesting assistance.

Per CDLA Rules, no player will be permitted to play in excess of four (4) games as an affiliate. Should there be a breach of the regulation the Head Coach of the affiliating team will assessed a 3 game suspension.

Should a Hornets’ affiliate team require assistance the correct and proper sequence of communication is as follows:

1. Affiliate coach contacts primary team’s coach and request assistance and use of affiliate player. **THIS MUST OCCUR FOR EVERY INSTANCE.** 2. Primary coach approves or declines. 3. Affiliate coach contacts player upon receiving primary coaches approval 4. Player agrees or declines the offer 5. Player contacts primary coach and advises of his absence 6. Hornet’s Affiliate Form is completed, by the affiliate coach and forwarded to Division Coordinators.

Philosophy: As a minor sport organization, we encourage skill development that challenges our young developing athletes. At times this challenge maybe presented to an individual player as an opportunity to affiliate to a higher level of practice/play either within their division (tier affiliation) or to the next designated division (division affiliation). All participants (the player, the parents, and the coaches of both teams) must be made aware of the possible risk to the player’s health and personal safety in this affiliation.

The following areas MUST be addressed by all participants:

• The skill of the player being affiliated AND the skill of the players in the higher tier/division. • The experience of the player being affiliated AND the experience of the players at the higher tier/division. • The physical size of the player being affiliated AND the physical size of the players at the higher tier/ division. • The athleticism of the player being affiliated AND the athleticism of the players at the higher tier/division. • The physical aggressiveness of the player being affiliated AND the physical aggressiveness of the players at the higher tier/division.

Policy: In assisting all concerned (the player, parents, and coaches of both teams) understand the risks and responsibilities associated with such upward affiliation, the Hornets Lacrosse Club requires that the bottom portion of this form be completed in full and forwarded to the division coordinator of the player’s original division prior to ANY affiliation of ANY Hornets player for the purpose of either play or practice at a higher tier/ division of play. This includes ANY affiliation to ANY RMLL governed team or organization.
