4 Stolen JAP in NZ I'm a member of the Club, with a 1929 Aero UV 8655, brought here from UK in 1985. I've been in the process of buying a replica dog-ear motor, built by Chris North, who has in the past offered JAP engine & other reproduction parts through the Bulletin. He has made, I think, three of these dog-ear engines. Sometime in the first week of August my motor was stolen from a smallholding near Auckland. The police are involved, but so far we have no clues or suspects. About ten years back a group of three friends borrowed quite a few parts from my car, then dismantled, to help with re-builds based on parts they already had. George Dyson, a foundry -man, made many castings, and so one of Chris North's replica engines, based on the 1926 LTOW 'dog-ear' as fitted to Morgan Aeros from '26 to '29, came to George, and he gathered other parts to build a Super Aero. George's project never went ahead, and so we agreed that the engine would come to my car. Only a few Aeros are in New Zealand, they all have engines, all the people know each other through our Morgan Club here & in UK, so the likelihood that the engine was taken by someone from here who knew exactly what it was built for is slim. The aluminium rocker covers were left in the place the motor was lifted from, suggesting the thief didn't recognise them. There's a dreadful possibility the motor will be sold for scrap, fetching perhaps 20 pounds. A slim chance that it will appear in the UK or elsewhere if the thief targets Morgan owners. I attach pics of the motor which had sat uncovered for ten years, exactly as in the pics, in the position from which it was stolen. The front cover has no engine number, but some faint casting number impressions that carried through the copy casting here, just visible in the close pic. I'm not sure if the front cover is correct for the dog-ear. Richard Hudson NZ 09 235 1229

12 Eric Walpole. R.I.P. I first met Eric at a Club event 'The Chipperfield road trial' in 1963 he was driving his Morgan which was his only transport, and it looked to me like a 1934 Family model, I later on found out the chassis had come from a 1926 Aero, and that it also had a 4 speed gearbox from a Triumph Gloria, it was registered CHJ 672, and when first purchased by Eric and Jean, was a J.A.P. engined 2 seater, in which they took part in many Morgan events including the Malvern Rallies. The Family body was fitted when Laurence was born. Within a few years a Ford 8 van became the family transport, and was a regular visitor on South East and South Coast Group events. I remember one night meeting up with other members in a station yard, I believe it was Tonbridge, where a Morgan Super Sports had been reported as "abandoned". and it was decided that it ought to be taken into protective custody. I was in my 4/4, Gary Caroline his Super Sports and I can‟t remember who else was there, but somehow I ended up towing the Morgan, with Eric steering, and it was decided that Eric and Jean‟s front garden would be a good place to take it too, somewhere on the journey Gary ran out of oil, and as it was Castrol R no garage had any, so leaving Eric with both 3 wheelers, a hunt was on for the Castrol R, somehow we found some, and back to a near frozen Eric, the journey commenced back to Frederick Road, Cheam and the Morgan manhandled over the pavement and into the small area in front of no 40. It was now quite late (or early!) and Jean as usual found refreshment for the assembled company. I know that some time later the Morgan was sold to a new member, but can‟t remember how the legalities were arranged! There always seemed to be some reason for calling on Eric and Jean, and no one ever went away hungry! At one time the Harold Beart record car (but not with its original body) had been bought by Eric, but no one realised what this rather heavy chassis was, When these fairly complete remains were acquired by Colin Wilson an article was found in a magazine which outlined modifications that Beart had carried out for the 1928 season, and these were all present on the chassis. I later acquired this, and work on the special body is due to start this winter. Early stationary engines became another of Eric‟s interests, along with old gramophones, for a time, and always flying model aeroplanes, which were also his work, at one time working for 'Frog' www.houseoffrog.co.uk/frog-memories.htm and you can read about Eric‟s time with Frog, and see some photos of him testing models. The last Morgan on the road was a late F Super, in the late 1960s followed by a 1928 Family for restoration which was bought from me, unfortunately work on this did not get very far, and I was able to buy it back about 10 years ago, when Eric bought an F4. However Eric‟s illness prevented him from getting this Morgan on the road. but did not prevent his and Jean‟s attendance at Club events whenever possible. A real Morgan enthusiast, condolences to Jean and Laurence. Chris Booth

Missive from the trustees of the Morgan statue Foundation We are aware that many MTWC members support the project and we have been asked to update them. We are aware that the MTWC Committee does not support the Morgan Statue - but, the Trustees wish to point out to the MTWC Committee that the Morgan Statue is in memory of H.F.S. Morgan - not (as mentioned in the Newsletter)* as to whether it is a three or four-wheeler Morgan. The design of the statue was agreed by English Heritage and local officials (not Morgan enthusiasts or MMC personnel). It was agreed that the Morgan 4/4, having been in production for over 75 years - around 60 years in its present shape - a world record for any model of any manufacturer - was the most appropriate Morgan for the statue. I hope this clarifies any misunderstandings by some of the MTWC Committee or members. Roger Moran October 2012 *Note that this publication is not ‘The Bulletin’ Ed…

22 THE DOUBLE NIPPLE REPAIR Just a short note to emphasise the ingenuity of the typical member of the MTWC. On the Dutch run 2012 Colin Duggan and I went in my 2 speeder Family De-Luxe, sailing overnight from Hull to Europort Rotterdam, and arriving fresh and ready to take on the Dutch roads on the Friday morning. We had an approximately 115km drive from the port to the hotel, avoiding as best we could, any high speed roads. The scenic route was very pleasant, except for the dreaded drempfels which did not seem to have any logic to their severity, except they were guaranteed to be serious outside schools. On arrival at the hotel we were greeted by the UK German Run contingent who had arrived from Germany some time before, and were quietly cooling off with a beer or hot coffee on the hotel terrace. Whilst unloading the „fitted‟ luggage from the car I happened to notice an errant spoke in the front offside (RH) wheel sticking out at rather an acute angle. On further examination the next spoke to it was also found to be broken. Thankfully all the rest were sound. I cannot say for certain, but I suspect that somewhere along the drive from Europort I had been caught out by the severity of one or more of the drempfels (sleeping policemen to the uninitiated) and the sudden upward acceleration had been too much for the spoke(s). At first I considered doing nothing about them and hoping they would be OK (I had no spares with me), but was convinced by others that a broken wheel possibly in the middle of nowhere in a country whose language is a complete mystery to me would not be very sensible. Our Chairman left his refreshment and went to his car and returned with 2 spokes so now I had to do something. With the help of Colin and Brian I removed the wheel and deflated the tyre to be able to get at the nipple and removed the broken spokes. The fitting of the replacement spokes was complicated and some of the adjacent spokes had to be loosened to allow the new ones to be correctly laced up, a process which required the new spokes to be bent into a U shape with a diameter of approx. 3”. After straightening them out, we found that they were slightly shorter than the originals. With a great deal of effort one was screwed onto the nipple and with very careful work with a screwdriver a few threads were engaged. The other spoke was never going to connect to its nipple. Then came the flash of inspiration from Colin our marine engineer whose training at sea had made him capable of making a silk purse out of a sow‟s ear. He suggested cutting a short piece (approx.3/4”) of the threaded portion from the old broken spoke and using an original nipple to add this to the length of the replacement spoke. This required a shorter piece to be cut off the new spoke as it was too long after the short length was added, but with some final juggling about the spokes were replaced and the wheel refitted.(See photo) The replacement spokes were still in place after the weekend in Holland and a further 2 weeks in France, after which I finally got round to replacing them with new original length spokes. My thanks have to go to Brian Clutterbuck and Colin Duggan for the supply of spares and ingenuity which made for a very successful Dutch Run .

46 In Memoriam. E. Alan Moss • 1927 – 2012 Al Moss, founder of Moss Motors, and one of our pre-war racing buddies, passed away on Tuesday, September 25 from complications of pneumonia and a recovery from brain surgery. He raced his beloved MG TC and his 1934 Morgan MX4 at 29 events on the West Coast. His dry sense of humor was a special treat to all who know him and relished his friendship. Al retired from racing his beautiful Morgan trike in May, 2006 and offered it for sale, although I was not the first on tap to purchase it. The first person who was promised his car, should he decide to part with it, was the person from whom he purchased it, Andrew Spranza. I was 2nd in line, and happy to become the trike‟s new owner. The Morgan trike was one of several Morgans Al owned over the years, and he sold his nice Flat Rad Morgan several years ago. This year in Monterey, he sold his racing M.G. at auction and was pleased with the money it brought. Another highlight was having Al visit us at Infineon Raceway in 2009 for the Wine Country Classic and participate in the 100th Anniversary of Morgan Celebrations. He felt honored to pilot his old trike from the race track to the Sonoma Square for the Saturday night festivities. On Sunday, he drove the trike and led the parade laps for the Morgan track event. He always called the Morgan “our trike” and was pleased to hear reports that it was earning awards at various shows on the West Coast. Many of his old racing buddies were very pleased that Al visited us at Buttonwillow this May for the Annual VARA British Extravaganza, travelling from his home in Sedona, Arizona. At that time he looked a little frail but was in great spirits and shared some quality visiting with many of us. Four of the faithful Bay Area Morgan owners brought out their machines on September 29 for a tour of some 60 miles in our three-wheelers celebrating Al Moss. Al would have pleased that “Moss Mog” led the event. I hope Al has moved on to a better place, perhaps he will be racing one of his favorite cars and taking the checkered flag before going on to a victory lap. We‟ll miss you a lot, Al. You were a good friend and great buddy. Larry Ayers
