    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Hitachi and Toray to Test “Mega-ton Water System,” a Large-scale, High Efficiency Seawater Desalination System, in Saudi Arabia MOU completed with Saline Water Conversion Corporation, a Saudi Government owned seawater desalination company and Abunayyan Trading Company. Tokyo, Japan, May 20, 2015 --- Hitachi, Ltd. (TSE: 6501, “Hitachi”) and Toray Industries, Inc. (TSE: 3402, “Toray”) today announced that on May 5, a “Mega-ton Water Team” formed by the two companies completed a Memorandum of Understanding (“MOU”) regarding the testing of a “Mega-ton Water System,” which is a large-scale, high efficiency seawater desalination system. The MOU was completed in Riyadh, in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, with Saline Water Conversion Corporation (“SWCC”), a Saudi Government owned seawater desalination company, and Abunayyan Trading Company Limited (“ATC”), a water and energy related company, also in Saudi Arabia. On May 19, Hitachi and Toray reported on the completion of the MOU to representatives of the Japanese and Saudi governments and other interested parties at the 15th Saudi Arabia-Japan Business Council (a ceremony celebrating the 60th anniversary of the start of diplomatic relations between the two countries) held at the Hotel Okura in Minato Ward, Tokyo. The MOU stipulates that SWCC, the Mega-ton Water Team, and ATC will collaborate in the promotion and implementation of activities targeting tests using Mega-ton Water System technologies. Through these tests, the three signing parties will strive to achieve early startup of the Mega-ton Water System, which will produce one million cubic meters of fresh water per day from sea water at low costs, and with low energy consumption and minimal environmental impact.

    For Realization of a Circular Economy Under Toray Group Sustainability Vision, “a world where resources are sustainably managed” is one of perspectives of the world that we aim to realize by 2050. Society has so far faced various issues such as resource depletion, marine pollution from significant garbage inflow, and CO2 emis- sions. To solve these issues, Toray has positioned measures to realize a circular economy that effectively uses resources, as a key theme in “Project AP-G 2022.” Toray Industries, Inc. Integrated Annual Report 2020 68 Realizing a Circular Economy through Various Technologies and Products Toray is contributing to the realization of “a world where resources are sustainably managed”—the so-called circular economy—through various technologies in such areas as recycling of plastics, utilization of biomass in raw materials, use of renewable and hydrogen energy, and reuse of water. For example, Toray is engaging in material recycling*1 and recycling within our operating processes, which reuse plastic products such as fibers and textiles, resins, and films. In addition, we have already produced nylon fiber products through chemical recycling*2 that turns unrecyclable plastics into basic chemicals such as monomer and gas. Furthermore, Toray is promoting the development of products made using plant-derived raw materials rather than petroleum, and membrane-integrated biotechnology that effectively produces these raw materials. Moreover, Toray technologies are being used in areas including materials for wind turbine blades that generate energy used in manu- facturing processes, materials for equipment that produces hydrogen used to generate renewable energy, and water treatment membranes for recycling wastewater.
