2 005 BASEBALL 9 HOFSTRA HERITAGE

he history of athletics at Hofstra is as old as the University itself, When the doors opened, the sole building on campus was Hofstra’s and is steeped in the Dutch heritage that helps to make Hofstra mansion, which he had affectionately named the Netherlands after his Tsuch a unique school. homeland, and all classes were held there. The mansion, which houses administrative offices, is now the center of Hofstra’s 240-acre campus, Hofstra has always had strong roots in tradition. The idea for a college came from Truesdel Peck Calkins, former THE HOFSTRA FLAG Hempstead superintendent of schools, who was then with New York University. He suggested that NYU might offer extension courses on the The Hofstra storm flag is modeled after an actual Dutch geus, a Hofstra property. Hofstra opened in September 1935, as a two-year privateer’s flag. In 1991 a representative of Holland’s Queen Beatrix extension branch of NYU; its official name was “Nassau College – presented the banner to then Hofstra President (now President Hofstra Memorial of New York University at Hempstead, Long Island.” Emeritus) James M. Shuart. The history of the flag dates back to 1572, when a group of Dutch loyalists called Watergeuzen used the flag’s mast to ram the gates of a Dutch city in their opposition to Spanish rule. While the Netherlands Royal Navy flies the original red, white and blue geus, the Hofstra version has been redesigned in the school colors of gold, white and blue.

The gold, white and blue Hofstra colors themselves spring from Dutch roots. The first official Hofstra flag appeared on April 19, 1940, when Dr. Alexander Loudon, an envoy for Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, presented his country’s flag to Hofstra in a special ceremony. However, the flag he presented was not the red, white and blue flag of the Netherlands, but the orange, white and blue banner of William of Nassau with a Hofstra emblem placed on the flag. The University has used the design ever since, although President Shuart, after researching the colors, replaced the orange hue with gold, making the flag truer to the original House of Nassau. The flag is one of Hofstra’s most recognizable symbols, utilized in publications, pins and souvenirs.

THE HOFSTRA SEAL

The Hofstra seal, another easily recognizable emblem, was designed from the royal Dutch emblem by art instructor Constant Van de Wall. The seal is modeled on the coat of arms of the House of Orange-Nassau. The round seal includes the coat of arms, flanked by lions on either side. A lion also stands in the center of the coat of arms, holding a sword in its right claw and a bundle of seven arrows, which represent the seven provinces of Holland, in its left. The seal also carries the motto of the House of Orange-Nassau in Old French: “Je maintiendray” (I stand

10 HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY steadfast). In 1988 one of the two lions on the seal was officially replaced with a lioness. The seal is now the focal point of the “” logo.

THE HOFSTRA NICKNAMES

The Hofstra nickname has also evolved over the years. For decades, Hofstra athletic teams have used the nicknames Flying Dutchmen, Dutchmen, or Dutch. Recently, an additional nickname of The Pride has become popular. We have not changed our nickname. We are both the Dutch (and its variations) and the Pride.

The Pride nickname started during the University’s dramatic recovery and growth in the mid to late ‘80’s from a major fiscal crisis during the previous decade. The first consistent use of the word “Pride” relating to athletics started in 1989 when the thus she would lose the race. All this came to pass, and when the race University’s athletic booster club was founded and called itself The Pride was over and won by Hippomenes, they fell deeply in love and the youth Club. At that time it had no meaning associated with our teams. It was carried off his prize. However, they angered Venus for their failure to simply consistent with a general feeling about all of our efforts. thank her. As punishment, she turned Hippomenes into a lion and Atalanta into a lioness. The Pride nickname has also evolved over the past decade in a more specific fashion than just the expression of the feeling. The word pride With this strong identification with lions and the multiple meanings of is used to describe a sense of having strong self-respect or a sense of the word pride, our coaches and players, as well as the sports media, accomplishment. The two lions led to extensive use Dutchwomen or the Lady Dutch. The men’s teams are also comfortable of the word “Pride” in talking about Hofstra, as a group of lions is called with the nickname Pride. a pride. To complement this figure, in 1998, the University commissioned Gregg Wyatt to sculpt a similarly sized figure of a running man. In this case it was a representation of “Hippomenes” who was a central figure in the myth. The myth of Atalanta and Hippomenes relates closely to Hofstra symbology.

As the myth goes, an Oracle told Atalanta, as a young girl, that she must never marry. Thus, Atalanta avoided men and devoted herself to the chase. Soon she could outrun any man. Yet because Atalanta was so attractive she had many suitors. To deal with them she imposed an almost impossible condition. She would only marry one who could beat her in a foot race. While she would be the prize of such a race, the penalty for losing was death. Nonetheless there were suitors and there was need of a judge for such races. Hippomenes was chosen for this role. However, when he saw Atalanta he immediately fell in love with her. Knowing he could never out her, he sought the help of Venus.

Venus agreed, and gave him three golden apples, which Hippomenes was to throw in front of Atalanta during the race. The apples were so desirable it would be impossible for her to resist picking them up, and

Hofstra also realizes the time commitment made by student-athletes and has committed the facilities and resources to support all students.

The University Tutorial Program (UTP) provides free tutoring in every subject area to any Hofstra student. In addition to this service, the UTP has an athletic component that addresses the academic needs of student-athletes. The UTP academic counselor administers this athletic component. The UTP emphasizes four areas in their efforts to ensure the academic success of Hofstra’s student-athletes.

Area one is academic counseling. Services are provided in the areas of academic planning, career planning, personal counseling, and campus and community referrals. The counselor also meets with prospective student-athletes, at the coach's request, to share the many benefits of a Hofstra University education.

Area two is academic advising. In an effort to ease the demand on the Office of Advisement, the UTP academic counselor also advises first- year and undecided student-athletes.

Area three is academic monitoring. The UTP counselor monitors the academic progress of student-athletes to ensure compliance with Hofstra University,

NCAA and conference regulations. The counselor’s regular communication with the faculty and coaches provide an opportunity for early intervention should academic difficulties arise.

Area four is study halls. The University Tutorial Program provides all athletic study halls with tutors in various subjects and assesses the needs of individual student-athletes to provide the most effective study environment. The assessment tool administered by the UTP is also used to provide various enrichment seminars for the student-athletes such as time management, writing skills, campus resources, and surviving the college transition.

2 005 BASEBALL 15 CHRIS DOTOLO – HEAD BASEBALL COACH

hris Dotolo is in his fourth season at the Chelm of the Hofstra Baseball program. Dotolo, the 12th baseball coach in Hofstra history, took over the reigns of the program when Hofstra joined the highly competitive Colonial Athletic Association. In his three seasons, Dotolo has posted a 38-111 record.

Since his arrival at Hofstra, Dotolo has upgraded all facets of the program. The team plays a rigorous non-conference schedule that has included trips to Auburn, Florida and the College of Charleston. Dotolo spearheaded a renovation of University Field that resulted in sunken dugouts, a Competition Turf infield, an improved drainage system and bleacher seating behind home plate. Dotolo has also increased the talent level of the Pride and while it has yet to be reflected in the overall record, it is obvious to observers. In 2004, two of Dotolo’s recruits – Mike Walsh and Ricky Caputo – were named to the All-CAA first and second teams, respectively, marking the first time that Hofstra had more than a single all-conference selection. The Pride have also set team records for hits, doubles, , fielding percentage and double plays turned since his arrival.

Dotolo, who at age 36 is the youngest head coach in the CAA, brought an extensive baseball background to the Pride. He had been an assistant coach for seven years, including five on the Division I level, and also played four seasons of . Before accepting his current position he spent two seasons as an assistant coach at St. John’s University in Jamaica, New York. At St. John’s, Dotolo worked with the , outfielders and hitters, and served as the recruiting coordinator.

16 HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY Before arriving at St. John’s, Dotolo spent four years (1995-99) as an assistant coach at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. While with the Big Green, he worked with the infielders and outfielders in addition to coordinating all team travel, organizing practices and overseeing the ordering of equipment and maintenance of the baseball facility.

In addition to his Division I coaching experience, Dotolo served as an assistant coach for one season (1994-95) at Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Virginia and for one season (1995) at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He has also coached in the prestigious , serving as assistant coach with the Harwich Mariners in the summer of 1995.

Prior to joining the coaching ranks, Dotolo played four seasons (1991-94) in the San Francisco Giants (MLB) organization, finishing his career in the Pacific Coast League (AAA) with the Phoenix Firebirds in 1994.

A former two-time all conference selection in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, Dotolo graduated from Virginia Wesleyan College in Virginia Beach, Virginia in 1991 with a bachelor’s in history. He also spent two years at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia, and was a member of the 1988 squad that advanced to the NCAA Division I Regionals. 2 005 BASEBALL 19 2005 HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY BASEBALL OUTLOOK

Steve Oliveri The Hofstra Pride and Head Coach Chris Dotolo enter the 2005 season with one goal in mind – qualify for the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament. “Once you make the tournament, anything can happen,” said Dotolo.

Qualifying for the CAA Tournament is easier said then done, but Dotolo thinks he knows what has to happen to make it a reality. “Plain and simple, we need to keep our team ERA below 5.00,” explained Dotolo. “If we do that we have a good chance. We always hit well and our defense is solid, so it is all about pitching.”

The 2005 season marks Dotolo’s fourth year in charge of the Pride and it is also the first year that every player on the roster has been his recruit. That first recruiting class are now juniors and Dotolo will be fielding an experienced team. The juniors have been playing together for the last two seasons and nearly all of the underclassmen have significant game experience as well. “I really feel that this team is ready to win,” said Dotolo. “We have been in close games and we have also been blown out, but our guys are not intimidated. I think they now understand what it takes and our captains (Ricky Caputo, Mike Walsh, Josh Stewart and Brett Stambolian) have done a great job as leaders, setting the tone for the rest of the team.”

Here is a position-by-position look at the 2005 Pride:

Mike Walsh Catcher Juniors Mike Walsh and Steve Oliveri return to handle duties behind the plate. Walsh was a first team All-Colonial Athletic Association selection as a utility player and Dotolo sees Walsh filling a utility role for the Pride once again. “Mike will play somewhere every day,” said Dotolo. “He is a team leader and too valuable not to be in the lineup, whether it is behind the plate, first base, third base or designated hitter.” Walsh batted .330 with 12 doubles and 33 RBIs last season in 48 games. Oliveri started 39 of 43 games last season and has done most of the catching the last two seasons. “Steve has proven he can catch everyday at this level,” said Dotolo. Oliveri hit .286 with 19 RBIs in 2004.

Two freshmen – Scott Rader and John Boyd III – will push the veterans for playing time. Rader is being groomed as the catcher of the future and Dotolo thinks he is going to be a good one. “Scott is a good defensive catcher and hopefully he can get some game experience this season,” said Dotolo. Rader was an all-area selection at Shenendehowa High School in Clifton Park, New York. Boyd joins the Pride from Upper Room Christian School in Dix Hills, New York, where he batted .718 with 48 RBIs as a senior. Dotolo says that Boyd “has some pop in his bat.” First Base Dotolo is likely looking at a platoon situation at first base with Walsh, as well as freshmen Matt Kougasian and Anthony Sarno in the mix. Kougasian joins the Pride from New Jersey powerhouse St. Joseph Regional, where he was team Most Valuable Player and batted .400 as a senior. A switch hitter, Dotolo thinks that Kougasian has all the makings of being a solid player on the collegiate level. Sarno, who will also fill a spot in the pitching rotation, was an All-New Jersey Group III selection as a senior at Colonia High School and had what Dotolo termed “a good fall season swinging the bat.”

20 HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY Second Base Outfield Josh Stewart Sophomores Felix Adamkiewicz and Andy Campana will compete for The Hofstra time at second, although each player could fill in at short or third base outfield features as well. Adamkiewicz saw action in 20 games last season with eight eight players vying starts and batted .241, while Campana started 32 of 42 contests and hit for time, including .262 with nine stolen bases in 10 attempts. five returnees. Stewart after starting 42 of batted .330 with a 44 games last team-best 46 runs season. Entering scored, 16 doubles his third season as and 16 stolen a starter, Dotolo is bases. Stambolian was hurt in the season opener at The College of Charleston and did not return until mid-April, and received just 19 at bats on the season. Stambolian started 33 of 34 games in 2003 and batted .246. Third Base Junior second team Sophomore George Athanasopoulos should also see a great deal of All-CAA second playing time after a stellar freshman campaign that saw him bat .302 baseman Ricky with 11 doubles, four triples, three home runs and 29 RBIs. Caputo moves over Ricky Caputo Athanasopoulos also led the Hofstra outfield with six assists. Senior to third this season Steve Conley and junior Eric Balson provide experience at the position and Dotolo expects and will battle for starting jobs as well. 2 005 BASEBALL 21 Schedule Charlie Frago Dotolo has once again challenged his team with a tough early season schedule that will take the team to Auburn, Virginia Military Institute, Liberty and Delaware State in February and March. “The schedule is tough, but I think we have some winnable games,” said Dotolo. “I think that VMI and Liberty are CAA-caliber opponents, and these types of games will toughen us up for the conference schedule.” The Pride also play an array of local opponents as part of their non-conference slate, including St. John’s, Seton Hall, Long Island University and Stony Brook.

The CAA schedule will be its usual challenge as the league was ranked 11th out of 31 conferences in the final RPI report of 2004, ahead of better-known conferences the Big Ten and the Atlantic 10. The league sent two teams to the 2004 NCAA Tournament and had five teams post more than 30 wins and seven teams win more than 25 games.

missed all of last season, was highly regarded coming out of Malvern Prep in Pennsylvania. Jeff Denlea

Will DeVito, a sophomore transfer from Dowling College in Oakdale, New York, should also get a long look from the coaching staff as a potential starter. DeVito was 4-1 with a 3.96 ERA and 63 strikeouts at Dowling and helped the Lions to the NCAA Northeast Regional final. DeVito earned All-Long Island accolades as a senior at Chaminade High School in Mineola, New York. Stephen Fox, a 6-5 freshman, should also get a shot at starting. Dotolo is excited about Fox’s potential. Fox was 7- 2 with a 0.89 ERA as a senior at Bergen Catholic in Oradell, New Jersey, and earned All-New Jersey parochial first team honors.

Dotolo has several pitchers that could come out of the bullpen or spot start as needed. Sophomores Patrick Rogers, Jeff Denlea, and Kevin Conzelman are likely the top hurlers out of the pen and Dotolo has said that Rogers and Denlea could be on the hill “every day.” Rogers, who has a three-quarter delivery, could be in line for the closers job and was 0-1 in 13 appearances last season. Denlea came out of the pen a team- high 27 times last season and the sidearmer was 2-2 with two saves and 21 strikeouts. Denlea was a Southern Collegiate Baseball League All- Star last summer as a member of the Lenoir Oilers. Conzelman, a 6-6 lefty, appeared in two games without recording a decision.

Five other newcomers – Greg Lane, Dan Lux, Anthony Sarno, Jon Smolenski and Mike Xydias – will be seeking time on the mound as well. Lane, a third baseman at Binghamton (NY) High School is just learning to pitch, but Dotolo likes his potential. Lux, a lefty, impressed during the fall season and could be in line for some work. Sarno, also a lefty, should also be in the pitching mix, as well as part of a first base platoon, after posting a career 15-10 record at Colonia High School. Smolenski, who attended Grayson County College during the fall 2003, hasn’t really played since his senior year at Kennedy-Kenrick High School in Norristown, Pennsylvania, where he was ranked as one of the Top Six Prospects in Pennsylvania by Baseball America. Xydias was a two-time All-Nassau County selection at East Rockaway High School in East Rockaway, New York.

UNIVERSITY FIELD

he Pride call University Field, located on Hofstra’s North Campus, their Thome. University Field is centrally located between two of the most frequented sites on campus, the Hofstra Recreation Center and the Hofstra University Arena. It is also just 25 yards from the Colonial Square residential complex.

University Field has undergone major renovations in recent years. The infield was skinned and a new drainage system was installed. This was followed by the installation of “Competition Turf” by Edel Grass. The artificial grass surface, which is similar to what is used at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was installed by Landtek of Amityville, New York. The new surface gives the Pride greater flexibility in playing during inclement weather and will also allow for greater use during the summer months. Other renovations included leveling the berm that was located behind the backstop, moving the backstop back 10 feet and installing new bleachers behind home plate. New fences were also installed along the right field and left field lines. In 2002-03, the existing dugouts were replaced with sunken dugouts, measuring 70 feet in length, with protective fencing. During the summer of 2004, the outfield warning track was resurfaced with crushed gravel for better playability and drainage.

The recent renovations weren’t the first done to University Field. In 1990 extensive outfield repair was done, including the installation of a wooden fence. In 1991 dugouts were constructed, new fencing was installed in foul territory and the bullpen areas were also enclosed with fencing.

University Field has dimensions of 331 feet down the left field line, 380 to center field and 340 down the right field line. There is ample parking adjacent to the field.

38 HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY THE GAMBARDELLA GATEWAY TO HOFSTRA BASEBALL

The entrance to University Field, located just south of the backstop seating, is named in memory of Gennaro “Jerry” Gambardella, a second-year Pride baseball player from West Haven, Connecticut, who died suddenly on November 14, 2001. The Gambardella Gateway to Hofstra Baseball, which also features a bronze plaque in Gambardella’s memory, was officially dedicated on October 27, 2002. Then-Hofstra Director of Athletics Harry Royle proclaimed, “Players for decades to come will use the Gambardella Gateway to Hofstra Baseball and know who Jerry was.”

HOFSTRA PHYSICAL FITNESS CENTER/ NEW YORK JETS PRACTICE BUBBLE

Hofstra can avoid inclement weather by using the indoor Physical Fitness Center, which is equipped with pitching machines and batting cages. The Pride also has use of the New York Jets indoor practice bubble. The 50-yard turf field gives Hofstra a unique practice environment. The practice bubble is located on the North Campus, near Hofstra Arena.

HOFSTRA ARENA WEIGHT ROOM

The team also has the use of a state- of-the-art weight training facility. Located in the Hofstra Arena, the weight room is outfitted with the most advanced strength training and cardiovascular equipment available.

50 HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY SERVICE

The Hofstra University Baseball program believes it has a special responsibility to the community. Thus, whether it’s the height of the season or those “slow” offseason months, the Hofstra Baseball staff and student-athletes are always active in the area.

The Pride lend their time and efforts to charitable and educational causes. The team has participated in the American Cancer Society’s “Walk for a Cure” breast cancer awareness walk at Jones Beach, and has volunteered at the Special Olympics, working with various teams and officiating games. This past offseason, the Pride conducted “Operation Cleanup” at the Schwarting Elementary School in the Plainedge School District.
