Welcome to the latest edition of Fun In Brum produced by the Early Years Service. We hope you find the information useful. There are loads of exciting things to do for all the family and some of them are totally free. We have added contact details of Birmingham Libraries which often run activities during school holidays. The activities are listed in date order.

Fun for All This edition contains a wide range of activities including some for disabled children and young people up to the age of 19 in some cases. When we have been told that an activity or event is inclusive we have added the following text - If your child or young person has a disability, please call the organisation for further information. Whilst we have been assured these activities are inclusive we would always recommend that you call ahead to discuss your child’s needs to ensure they are able to meet them.

Tobogganing is fast, exciting, exhilarating and fun activity for children aged between 3 and 12. Our exclusive purpose built 25 metre toboggan slope operates all year round, whatever the weather! We can have up to 30 toboggans on the slope at any one time. We also have 2 tubes that travel a little slower and allow a parent or guardian to sit in with a child. Our tobogganing area also has its own picnic benches situated at the bottom of the slope making it perfect for a picnic or outdoor birthday celebrations!

We know its a bit chilly at times during February so our 90 minute sessions are ideal to stop that freeze up or for the hardy you can book as many sessions as you like! Paddlepower Kayaking A great chance for young people to get introduced to the sport of kayaking, this course follows the British Canoeing PaddlePower scheme which is progressive and leads the young people on a structured development curve. This session is mixed ability and we will sign off logbooks as appropriate. Stand Up Paddleboarding This session is aimed at those with little or no experience of the sport previously. This low impact activity is a great way to build water confidence and learn new skills. Rowing (11 years plus) This session is aimed at those with little or no experience of the sport previously. Rowing with our specially designed boats with stability outriggers is easy to pick up and a great way to get fit! These sessions are run by fully qualified staff that are trained and assessed by the National Governing bodies, all staff have full DBS clearance. If the young people are staying for both sessions in a day they will be supervised at lunch time. Everyone will need to bring warm clothes and a towel, for each session they will need footwear that can wet also. We will provide wetsuits for kayaking and stand up paddleboarding but if you have your own please bring it. If the weather is very poor we won’t cancel; we’ll just look at what we can run with the conditions we have – it may be we do indoor rowing and kayaking if the weather is bad.

Junior - Learn to Ski Camp - Ackers Adventure 3566 Our junior courses run during on selected dates during the February Half Term from 10:00am – 4:00pm for children aged 8-16. This includes 5 hours of tuition with fully qualified, experienced instructors and all equipment. 1 hours worth of breaks will be given throughout the day. These courses aim to take all participants from a complete beginner level up to the basic recreational standard (controlled snowplough turns and use of the lift) within one day.

Children will learn singing, good technique and musicianship taught through exciting singing games. This is a fun group which enables children to build self-confidence and develop musical skills in pitch and rhythm in a friendly environment. Children are not expected to be able to read music. Making music by singing in a group or choir is a great way for children to develop their team working and social skills, increase self-discipline and self-confidence and improve emotional expression and verbal memory skills. Page 15 of 52 MAC Camp: Pottery Bugs And Hedgerow Animals 3521 During this 3 day camp children will learn how to make 3D pottery bugs such as ladybirds and snails and hedgerow animals such as hedgehogs. They will explore different ceramic techniques such as hand slab building, coiling and pinching then learn to paint their creatures with coloured slips. Learners will be encouraged to review and refine their work to produce finished ceramic pieces that are unique. The course is held in the pottery studio and provides a fun and creative environment which will encourage children’s creativity and discovery. Stories from the Web (www.storiesfromtheweb.org) is a FREE website used by children and young people from 0 to 16 years where you can find out about books, authors, illustrators and publishers. You can read extracts of books online and then get involved with the activities on the site. Drop into your local library for a user name and password.

Burbury Park Inclusion Project This project offers short breaks for disabled children aged 0 - 18 years with a registered childminder. Referrals must be made by a professional who is working with the family.

The project aims to access a registered childminder within the family's locality who can meet the requirements and needs of the young person and family.

The days and times are agreed with the families, the childminder and the project, along with any other specific requirements for the placement to happen.
