The Paleocene and Ypresian localities from the Ouarzazate Basin (Morocco) hâve yielded mammalian faunas with possible creodonts, « insectivores » (paleoryctids, todralestids and adapisoriculids) (Gheerbrant, 1992, 1994, 1995), the oldest représentative ofeupri- mates (Sigé et al, 1990) and archaic ungulates (Sudre et al, 1993). Unlike living species, fossil hyracoids simultaneously possess replaced P1 and canine teeth. Fossil species also have shorter crowns, an upper and lower I3 locus, an upper I2, and a hypoconulid on m3. Prenatal specimens of the living Procavia capensis and Heterohyrax brucei show up to three tooth buds posterior to upper dI1 and anterior to the seven upper cheek teeth that consistently erupt; these include an anterior premolar but not a canine. Most lower cheek teeth finish eruption during growth in hyracoids, not after growth as in most other afrotherians. -

Transect method was used to observe feeding behavior and activity patterns and questionnaire interview was used to determine traditional medicinal use of tree hyrax. Tree hyrax shelters and trees with cavities were located. Activities of hyraxes were observed in the morning, midday and afternoon hours. -

Simons, March 29, 1990 ABSTRACT Recent hyracoids and elephants share a tax- tarsals, in which podial bones from the proximal and distal eopode arrangement of tarsal and carpal bones, a condition in rows interlock in a zig-zag fashion (1, 3, 4). Thus, the lunar which bones are aligned with minimal interlocking between shares distal articulation with both the magnum and the adjacent elements. Taxeopody has often been interpreted as a unciform, and the magnum articulates proximo-medially with synapomorphy reflecting a close phyletic link between Hyra- the scaphoid. In the tarsus, the astragalus articulates with coidea and Proboscidea, but recently it has been suggested both the navicular and the cuboid. [Fischer, M. S. (1986) Cour.,Forschungsinst. Senckenberg 84, The taxeopody of Hyracoidea and Proboscidea has been 1-132] that hyracoid taxeopody is an independent acquisition interpreted as an indication of phyletic relationship between resulting from selection favoring increased midcarpal and the two orders (1, 4, 6, 7). However, this view has been midtarsal rotation and that Hyracoidea is actually allied with challenged, most recently, by Fischer (8, 9), who concluded Perissodactyla. As a test of this hypothesis, isolated carpal and that taxeopody has been acquired independently in Hyra- tarsal bones of primitive Oligocene hyracoids from the Fayum, coidea and Proboscidea. -

New large−bodied mammals from the late Oligocene site of Chilga, Ethiopia WILLIAM J. SANDERS, JOHN KAPPELMAN, and D. TAB RASMUSSEN Sanders, W.J., Kappelman, J., and Rasmussen, D.T. 2004. New large−bodied mammals from the late Oligocene site of Chilga, Ethiopia. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 49 (3): 365–392. Newly recovered fossil proboscideans and embrithopods from Chilga, Ethiopia are described and evaluated taxonomi− cally. They are dated to ca. 28–27 Ma (late Oligocene), temporally intermediate between late Eocene–early Oligocene Afro−Arabian faunas dominated by archaic, endemic taxa, and replacement faunas of the early Miocene marked by a mas− sive influx of Eurasian migrants. The paucity of similar−aged sites in Afro−Arabia makes Chilga critical for delineating the initiation and sequence of this faunal turnover. While most of the genera present at Chilga persist from older Afro−Arabian localities, at higher elevation and farther inland than elsewhere, there are no Eurasian mammals in the fauna. However, the archaic endemics from Chilga differ morphometrically from their older congeners, and include a new embrithopod, Arsinoitherium giganteum sp. nov., and novel species of elephantiform proboscideans, Phiomia major sp. nov., aff. Palaeomastodon sp. nov. A, and aff. Palaeomastodon sp. nov. B. New, primitive deinotheres and gompho− theres also occur at Chilga, extending the fossil records of these proboscideans considerably back in time. The Chilga deinothere, Chilgatherium harrisi sp. nov., differs sufficiently from Prodeinotherium and Deinotherium to be placed in its own subfamily, Chilgatheriinae subfam. nov. The Chilga gomphothere is smaller than Miocene elephantoids, and is referred to cf. Gomphotherium sp. nov. -

(Advisor) _______________________ Prof. Afework Bekele (Chairman) _______________________ ABSTRACT Population Ecology and Threats of the Rock hyrax (Procavia capensis) in Bale Mountains National Park, Ethiopia Gebremeskel Teklehaimanot Reda Addis Ababa University, 2015 A study on the distribution, population status, feeding ecology, habitat utilization and threats to the rock hyrax (Procavia capensis Pallas 1766) was carried out in the Bale Mountains National Park (BMNP), Ethiopia during August 2010 – February 2013. Distribution of the rock hyrax was assessed by questionnaire survey and field observations. Population status of the species was studied by stratified random sampling using point count method. Direct observations by scan sampling and rumen content analysis were used to study the feeding ecology of the rock hyrax.
