He is also well placed to comment on the risks of preemptive invasion for existing alliances and the future prospects for the international rule of law. An analysis of the ways in which the international community has “confronted evil,” Shawcross’ brief polemic argues that U.S. President George Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair were right to go to war without UN clearance, and that the hypocrisy of Jacques Chirac was largely responsible for the collapse of international consensus over the war. His curious identification with Bush and his neoconservative allies as the most qualified to implement this humanitarian agenda, however, fails to recognize essential differences between the leftist case for war and the hard-line justification for regime change in Iraq. Origin stories for superheroes and supervillains frequently appear in the plots of comic books long after the characters were created and with the shift in the stable of artists involved, different and sometimes competing events in the characters' biographies are revealed. This is particularly true of series that have enjoyed long periods of popularity or those that were phased out and then later revived. The stimulus for this m1icle was the origin story conceived for the X-Men supervillain Magneto under Chris Claremont's plotting, after the series was resurrected in 197 5 and by the foregrounding of Magneto's Holocaust past in the opening sequence to Bryan Singer's 2000 filmX-Men.

  • A Pilot Study of Motive Control to Reduce Vengeance Cravings
REGULAR ARTICLE A Pilot Study of Motive Control to Reduce Vengeance Cravings Michael Rowe, PhD, James Kimmel, Jr., JD, Anthony J. Pavlo, PhD, Kimberly D. Antunes, BSW, Chyrell D. Bellamy, MSW, PhD, Maria J. O’Connell, PhD, Luz Ocasio, Miraj Desai, PhD, Japjot Bal, BA, and Elizabeth H. Flanagan, PhD Violence is a serious public health problem in the United States, and a common risk factor for many forms of violence is the perpetrator’s motivation to achieve personal justice for past wrongs and injustices. Using a fictional transgression scenario to stimulate revenge feelings, we studied the preliminary efficacy of an intervention designed to mitigate revenge desires among victims of perceived injustice. The intervention consisted of a guided role-play of key figures in the justice system (e.g., victim, prosecutor, defendant, judge, etc.) in an imaginary mock trial of the offender. Study participants’ revenge desires toward the perpetrator decreased significantly immediately after the intervention and at a 2-week follow-up interview. Benevolence toward the offender increased immediately postintervention and at a 2-week follow-up interview. These results suggest that the intervention has promise to decrease revenge desires in people who have been victimized, and it potentially opens the door to behavioral health motive control approaches to violence prevention. Findings on the roles of vengeance and the desire for retaliation in relation to violent acts, as well as neuroscience research that suggests a connection between retaliatory aggression and the neural circuitry of anticipated reward and cravings, are discussed. Limitations of this pilot study are also discussed, and recommendations for future research are provided.

  • Why People Watch Reality TV
MEDIA PSYCHOLOGY, 6, 363–378 Copyright © 2004, Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Inc. Why People Watch Reality TV Steven Reiss James Wiltz The Ohio State University We assessed the appeal of reality TV by asking 239 adults to rate themselves on each of 16 basic motives using the Reiss Profile standardized instrument and to rate how much they watched and enjoyed various reality television shows. The results suggested that the people who watched reality television had above-av- erage trait motivation to feel self-important and, to a lesser extent, vindicated, friendly, free of morality, secure, and romantic, as compared with large norma- tive samples. The results, which were dose-dependent, showed a new method for studying media. This method is based on evidence that people have the potential to experience 16 different joys. People prefer television shows that stimulate the feelings they intrinsically value the most, which depends on individuality. Reiss (2000a) put forth a comprehensive theory of human motivation, variously called sensitivity theory or the theory of 16 basic desires. The theory borrows heavily from the philosophical ideas of Aristotle (trans. 1953), but it differs from Aristotle in its analysis of individuality. Previous reports on sensitivity theory ad- dressed diverse applications such as spirituality (Reiss, 2000, in press), personality (Havercamp & Reiss, 2003), interpersonal relationships (Engel, Olson, & Patrick, 2002), psychopathology (Reiss & Havercamp, 1996), developmental disabilities (Dykens & Rosner, 1999; Lecavalier & Tasse, 2002), and sports (Reiss, Wiltz, & Sherman, 2001). In this article, the theory is applied to understanding reality tele- vision. The conceptual approach of this article may be expanded someday into a general theory of culture.
