Session 1: What is the United Kingdom and where is it located?
Key Knowledge
‘United’ means joined together. ‘Kingdom’ means a country ruled by a king or queen. The ‘United Kingdom’ is a union of four countries all ruled by Queen Elizabeth II. The four countries in the United Kingdom are: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The United Kingdom is in the north-west of Europe.

Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland. Edinburgh has a famous castle and is also the location of the Scottish Parliament. In the Highlands there are large mountains called Munros, valleys and enormous lakes called lochs. One of the deepest lakes in the UK is Loch Ness.

What is special about Wales?

The capital of Wales is Cardiff which is located in the south of the country. The Welsh language (Cymraeg) is the oldest language in the UK. Wales is well known for its hills and mountains, with the highest mountains found in the northwest of the country. Snowdon is the highest mountain in Wales and England. Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwyllllantysiliogogogoch is a town in North Wales and has the longest place name in the world.

Session 4: What is unique about Northern Ireland?
Key Knowledge
Ireland is made up of two countries: the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland is the smallest country in the UK. Ireland has two big cities: Dublin, which is the capital of the Republic of Ireland and Belfast, which is the capital of Northern Ireland. The Giant’s Causeway is the most popular tourist attraction in Northern Ireland.

England is the biggest country in the United Kingdom. The capital city of England is London, which is also the capital of the United Kingdom. The Houses of Parliament are in London and this is where the government makes decisions about the rest of the United Kingdom. The river that runs through London is called the River Thames. The southern part of England is quite flat which means it is good land for growing food.
