Development of the Global Film Industry The global film industry has witnessed significant transformations in the past few years. Regions outside the USA have begun to prosper while non-traditional produc- tion companies such as Netflix have assumed a larger market share and online movies adapted from literature have continued to gain in popularity. How have these trends shaped the global film industry? This book answers this question by analyzing an increasingly globalized business through a global lens. Development of the Global Film Industry examines the recent history and current state of the business in all parts of the world. While many existing studies focus on the internal workings of the industry, such as production, distribution and screening, this study takes a “big picture” view, encompassing the transnational integration of the cultural and entertainment industry as a whole, and pays more attention to the coordinated develop- ment of the film industry in the light of influence from literature, television, animation, games and other sectors. This volume is a critical reference for students, scholars and the public to help them understand the major trends facing the global film industry in today’s world. Qiao Li is Associate Professor at Taylor’s University, Selangor, Malaysia, and Visiting Professor at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon- Sorbonne. He has a PhD in Film Studies from the University of Gloucestershire, UK, with expertise in Chinese- language cinema. He is a PhD supervisor, a film festival jury member, and an enthusiast of digital filmmaking with award- winning short films. He is the editor ofMigration and Memory: Arts and Cinemas of the Chinese Diaspora (Maison des Sciences et de l’Homme du Pacifique, 2019). -

The Rise of Controversial Content in Film
The Climb of Controversial Film Content by Ashley Haygood Submitted to the Department of Communication Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Arts in Communication at Liberty University May 2007 Film Content ii Abstract This study looks at the change in controversial content in films during the 20th century. Original films made prior to 1968 and their remakes produced after were compared in the content areas of profanity, nudity, sexual content, alcohol and drug use, and violence. The advent of television, post-war effects and a proposed “Hollywood elite” are discussed as possible causes for the increase in controversial content. Commentary from industry professionals on the change in content is presented, along with an overview of American culture and the history of the film industry. Success in the Film Industry
1 Abstract This paper attempted to answer the research question, “What determines a film’s success at the domestic box office?” The authors used an OLS regression model on data set of 497 films from the randomly selected years 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, and 2011, taking the top 100 films from each year. Domestic box-office receipts served as the dependent variable, with MPAA ratings, critical reviews, source material, release date, and number of screens acting as independent variables in the final regression. Results showed that source material, critical reviews, number of screens, release date, and some genres were statistically significant and positively contributed to a film’s domestic revenue. Introduction Each year in the United States, hundreds of films are released to domestic audiences in the hope that they will become the next “blockbuster.” The modern film industry, a business of nearly 10 billion dollars per year, is a cutthroat business (Box Office Mojo). According to industry statistics, six or seven of every ten films are unprofitable, making the business risky at best (Brewer, 2006). Given this inherent risk, how do film studios decide which films to place their bets on? Are there common factors, such as critical reviews, MPAA rating, or production budget, which explain one film’s monetary success relative to another? This question forms the basis of this research project. To answer it, we estimated an Ordinary Least Squares regression that attempted to explain the monetary success of the top films in five years out of the past decade. This regression expanded our original dataset, which used 100 randomly selected films from 2004. -

Seeing the unseen: Euphemism in Animated Films A Multimodal and Critical Discourse Study by Dalia Abyd Asseel M.A. (Linguistics) A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in THE DEPARTMENT OF LINGUISTICS AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE LANCASTER UNIVERSITY, UK JULY 2020 Abstract Animated films are contemporary popular cultural products recreating the ‘real’ world and engaging massive worldwide audiences of adults and children. Children as the ostensible viewers of animated films may acquire their cultural and ideological knowledge and beliefs about the world from the representations in animated films. Although during the past decade animated films have increasingly been the focus of attention of researchers across different disciplines, including education, gender, sexuality and literacy, studies tackling the discourse and language of animated films are still in their early stages. More specifically, very few studies have investigated the use of euphemism as a major micro-level linguistic device reflecting macro-level discourse and extending to sociocultural structures. To this end, this thesis examines euphemism constructed through the discourse of animated films by employing the strategies of Critical Discourse Studies (CDS). Moreover, Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA) is employed to examine discursive strategies involving visual representations accompanying euphemism and what underpins those strategies, and to shed light on the multimodal relations between the representation of both. Euphemism is frequently associated with the notion of taboo. Consequently, new words or phrases are designated to refer to linguistic taboos as alternatives used by speakers to minimise the threat to the audience’s face as well as to their own. -

Digital 3D, Parallax Effects, and the Construction of Film Space in Tangled 3D and Cave of Forgotten Dreams 3D Kristen Whissel Abstract This essay analyzes how parallax effects in Cave of Forgotten Dreams 3D (2010) and Tangled 3D (2010) effectively blur the boundaries between the past and present, sight and touch, and diegetic space and the space of reception in order to give form to themes concerning the dimensionality of the moving image. I show how these films function as ideal case studies for demonstrating digital 3D’s transformation of film space by organizing seeing, knowing, and feeling along the screen’s z-axis. Keywords: Digital 3D, parallax effects, affect, haptics, uncanny Since the release of Chicken Little 3D (Mark Dindal) in 2005, digital 3D cinema has had the odd historical status of being a ‘new’ medium that has returned to us from the past as a harbinger of cinema’s future. To be sure, digital 3D has transformed our understanding of the (pre-)history of the cinema itself, which now must include Charles Wheatstone’s invention of the stereoscope (1838) and Charles Babbage’s invention of the Analytical Engine (1837) in the first half of the 19th century. However long this history, the return of stereoscopic 3D as a digital medium demands a rethinking of film history to include the changing dimensionality of the moving image and, with it, transformations in the articulation of film space. Much as digital tools provide new means for organizing the image along and around the x- (horizontal) and y- (vertical) axes, they have also provided, as Stephen Prince has argued, new means for ‘choreographing’ story, character, and action along the z-axis—a continuum that stretches from the extreme Sæther, S.Ø. -

Resource Materials on the Learning and Teaching of Film This set of materials aims to develop senior secondary students’ film analysis skills and provide guidelines on how to approach a film and develop critical responses to it. It covers the fundamentals of film study and is intended for use by Literature in English teachers to introduce film as a new literary genre to beginners. The materials can be used as a learning task in class to introduce basic film concepts and viewing skills to students before engaging them in close textual analysis of the set films. They can also be used as supplementary materials to extend students’ learning beyond the classroom and promote self-directed learning. The materials consist of two parts, each with the Student’s Copy and Teacher’s Notes. The Student’s Copy includes handouts and worksheets for students, while the Teacher’s Notes provides teaching steps and ideas, as well as suggested answers for teachers’ reference. Part 1 provides an overview of film study and introduces students to the fundamentals of film analysis. It includes the following sections: A. Key Aspects of Film Analysis B. Guiding Questions for Film Study C. Learning Activity – Writing a Short Review Part 2 provides opportunities for students to enrich their knowledge of different aspects of film analysis and to apply it in the study of a short film. The short film “My Shoes” has been chosen to illustrate and highlight different areas of cinematography (e.g. the use of music, camera shots, angles and movements, editing techniques). Explanatory notes and viewing activities are provided to improve students’ viewing skills and deepen their understanding of the cinematic techniques. -

Discovery Guides Moving Pictures: The History of Early Cinema By Brian Manley Introduction The history of film cannot be credited to one individual as an oversimplification of any his- tory often tries to do. Each inventor added to the progress of other inventors, culminating in progress for the entire art and industry. Often masked in mystery and fable, the beginnings of film and the silent era of motion pictures are usually marked by a stigma of crudeness and naiveté, both on the audience's and filmmakers' parts. However, with the landmark depiction of a train hurtling toward and past the camera, the Lumière Brothers’ 1895 picture “La Sortie de l’Usine Lumière à Lyon” (“Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory”), was only one of a series of simultaneous artistic and technological breakthroughs that began to culminate at the end of the nineteenth century. These triumphs that began with the creation of a machine that captured moving images led to one of the most celebrated and distinctive art forms at the start of the 20th century. Audiences had already reveled in Magic Lantern, 1818, Musée des Arts et Métiers motion pictures through clever uses of slides http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Magic-lantern.jpg and mechanisms creating "moving photographs" with such 16th-century inventions as magic lanterns. These basic concepts, combined with trial and error and the desire of audiences across the world to see entertainment projected onto a large screen in front of them, birthed the movies.
