Continued Golden Whistle success for DRSv

Direct Rail Services (DRS) has been named ‘The Best Performing Rail Freight Operator’ for the eighth year running at the Golden Whistle Awards.

Now in its 12th year, the awards, organised by the Institute of Railway Operators and in conjunction with Modern Railways Magazine, celebrate operational excellence across the rail industry.

The prestigious Golden Whistles are awarded on the basis of operating statistics and DRS has been, yet again, recognised as the UK’s most reliable freight operator. In April this year, DRS joined forces with their fellow Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) transport subsidiaries, International Nuclear Services and Pacific Nuclear Transport Ltd, to create Nuclear Transport Solutions (NTS) bringing together its transport expertise and capabilities into a single transport division. •

Class 321 Swift Express Freight Train now ready

Eversholt Rail has unveiled the Class 321 Swift Express Freight train. The conversion began in early 2021, with Eversholt Rail, supported by Ricardo and Wabtec, carrying out the works at Wabtec’s Doncaster facility. The programme to convert the classic Class 321 into an express freight train has now been successfully completed and the train is service-ready.

The Class 321 Swift Express Freight trains will provide a cost- effective and low carbon solution for transporting parcels around the UK. The train has been designed to maximise capacity for parcels and light goods whilst ensuring the interior is flexible to meet individual customers’ operational requirements. The scope of works includes removal of passenger features, installation of new flooring and industry standard fixings throughout.
