2018 ANNUAL RePORT I’M EMPOWERED ENLIGHTENING WAYS to LIVE WITH Low VISION Regardless of where you are on the vision spectrum, Braille Institute provides comprehensive services to address the various needs of individuals who have a visual impairment. “We are here to help any individual who is having difficulties or struggling to participate in daily activities because of low vision. We’re not just for individuals who are totally blind,” said Nilima Tanna, Director of Low Vision Services (right). A person’s first introduction to Braille Institute’s services can be through our free low vision consultation with a specialist. In a typical one hour consultation, the specialist assesses and learns what activities the client is struggling with, and helps them find different ways of achieving their objectives. “We came to Braille Institute for a magnifier, but we left with so much more!” Carrie, whose mother has Macular Degeneration, said. “My only regret is that we didn’t meet Nilima two years ago when my mom’s vision first changed so drastically.” Carrie’s mother, Barbara, learned how to change the settings on her computer, received tips for writing a check, was told including magnification devices to help them how to visually mark the settings on her washer and dryer, and reach their goals,” Nilima said. learned she could request large print medication labels from Carrie said she saw her mother more her pharmacist. encouraged than at any other time in the “We assess their ability to perform various activities, last few years after having her one-on-one educate them about things such as how lighting and contrast consultation. -

Kelley, 45, a big man with a shaved head and a brown belt in Tae Kwan Do, lived for six years in the Carver Terrace public housing complex just across the fenceline from the Motiva Enterprises refinery in the West Side neighborhood of Port Arthur, Texas. To this day, Motiva’s 3,800-acre refinery remains the 800-pound gorilla on his block producing 285,000 barrels of oil a day. Refinery officials plan to expand its capacity 125 percent and produce 625,000 barrels a day making it the largest refinery in the nation. Playground at Carver Terrace The Motiva facility, jointly owned by Shell Oil Photo: Steve Lerner and Saudi Aramco, is not the only oil refinery or petrochemical plant fouling the air in this largely African-American and low-income neighborhood. Heavy emissions are also released into the air by the Valero refinery, Huntsman Petrochemical, and the Chevron Phillips plant, as well as the Great Lakes Carbon Corporation’s petroleum coke handling facility. The air is further burdened by massive releases from a major refinery owned by Total Petrochemicals USA (formerly Final Oil), Premcor Refining, as well as BASF Fina Petrochemicals located a few miles away in East Port Arthur. -

Many different stories have been written about the quests of the legendary king of Britain and his Knights of the Round Table, and as a result many modern adaptations have been made from varying perspectives. The Cambridge Companion to the Arthurian Legend traces the evolution of the story and begins by asking the question “whether or not there ever was an Arthur, and if so, who, what, where and when.” (Archibald and Putter, 1). The victory over the Anglo-Saxons at Mount Badon in the fifth century was attributed to Arthur by Geoffrey of Monmouth (Monmouth), but according to the sixth century monk Gildas, this victory belonged to Ambrosius Aurelianus, a fifth century Romano-British soldier, and the figure of Arthur was merely inspired by this warrior (Giles). Despite this, more events have been attributed to Arthur and he remains popular to write about to date, and because of that there is scope for analytic and comparative research on all these stories (Archibald and Putter). The legend of Arthur, king of the Britains, flourished with Geoffrey of Monmouth’s The History of the Kings of Britain (Monmouth). -
