What Killed Australian Cinema & Why Is the Bloody Corpse Still Moving?
What Killed Australian Cinema & Why is the Bloody Corpse Still Moving? A Thesis Submitted By Jacob Zvi for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the Faculty of Health, Arts & Design, Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne © Jacob Zvi 2019 Swinburne University of Technology All rights reserved. This thesis may not be reproduced in whole or in part, by photocopy or other means, without the permission of the author. II Abstract In 2004, annual Australian viewership of Australian cinema, regularly averaging below 5%, reached an all-time low of 1.3%. Considering Australia ranks among the top nations in both screens and cinema attendance per capita, and that Australians’ biggest cultural consumption is screen products and multi-media equipment, suggests that Australians love cinema, but refrain from watching their own. Why? During its golden period, 1970-1988, Australian cinema was operating under combined private and government investment, and responsible for critical and commercial successes. However, over the past thirty years, 1988-2018, due to the detrimental role of government film agencies played in binding Australian cinema to government funding, Australian films are perceived as under-developed, low budget, and depressing. Out of hundreds of films produced, and investment of billions of dollars, only a dozen managed to recoup their budget. The thesis demonstrates how ‘Australian national cinema’ discourse helped funding bodies consolidate their power. Australian filmmaking is defined by three ongoing and unresolved frictions: one external and two internal. Friction I debates Australian cinema vs. Australian audience, rejecting Australian cinema’s output, resulting in Frictions II and III, which respectively debate two industry questions: what content is produced? arthouse vs. -

Lines of tired, pensive Turkish soldiers, clothed in motley, ragged uniforms, prepare to charge the enemy trenches. The stereotypical images of Middle Eastern soldiers, all glinting eyes as they cheerfully leap forward to kill, does not exist here: they are just weary and fearful men defending their homeland. When they do charge the trenches they are at first puzzled as the trenches are empty: then to their initial credulity they see the Allied ships sailing off. As they run up the rise the images of dirty, muddy trenches give way to a bright blue sea under a cloudless sky. Laughter and cheers replace their sadness. After living in a state of extaordinary tension and miserable expectations of death and more suffering, they find that life can also give exuberant joy. -
The November
The November Man (2014) Brosnan-Kurylenko in un <em>action thriller</em> diretto con competenza. Un film di Roger Donaldson con Pierce Brosnan, Olga Kurylenko, Luke Bracey, Bill Smitrovich. Genere Thriller Produzione USA 2014. Il film è basato sul libro di Bill Granger "There are No Spies", settimo romanzo della lunga saga. Giancarlo Zappoli - www.mymovies.it 2008. -
Museum of the Moving Image Presents Comprehensive Terrence Malick Retrospective
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MUSEUM OF THE MOVING IMAGE PRESENTS COMPREHENSIVE TERRENCE MALICK RETROSPECTIVE Moments of Grace: The Collected Terrence Malick includes all of his features, some alternate versions, and a preview screening of his new film A Hidden Life November 15–December 8, 2019 Astoria, New York, November 12, 2019—In celebration of Terrence Malick’s new film, the deeply spiritual, achingly ethical, and politically resonant A Hidden Life, Museum of the Moving Image presents the comprehensive retrospective Moments of Grace: The Collected Terrence Malick, from November 15 through December 8. The films in the series span a period of nearly 50 years, opening with Malick’s 1970s breakthroughs Badlands (1973) and Days of Heaven (1978), through his career-revival masterworks The Thin Red Line (1998) and The New World (2005), and continuing with his 21st- century films—from Cannes Palme d’Or winner The Tree of Life (2011); the trio of To the Wonder (2012), Knight of Cups (2015), and Song to Song (2017); and sole documentary project Voyage of Time (2016)—through to this year’s A Hidden Life. Two of these films will be presented in alternate versions—Voyage of Time and The New World—a testament to Malick’s ambitious and exploratory approach to editing. In addition to Malick’s own feature films, the series includes Pocket Money (1972), an ambling buddy comedy with Lee Marvin and Paul Newman, which he wrote (but did not direct), and Thy Kingdom Come (2018), the documentary featurette shot on the set of To the Wonder by photographer Eugene Richards. -

The Paul Hogan Story
Coming to HOGES THE PAUL HOGAN STORY From Seven and FremantleMedia Australia (FMA) comes HOGES: The Paul Hogan story. An almost accidental supernova of raw comedic talent exploding onto the entertainment scene; first Australia, then the world. The story of how a married-at-18 Sydney Harbour Bridge rigger with five kids entered a TV talent contest on a dare from his work-mates to become a household name and an Oscar-nominated superstar. Embraced by all Australians and soon known simply as “Hoges,” he is joined on his meteoric journey by lifelong friend, producer and sidekick John “Strop” Cornell. Together, they first make Australians laugh, then proud with one of the most successful tourism campaigns in history selling Aussie hospitality to the world. This, with the runaway success of Crocodile Dundee, the highest US-grossing foreign film ever in its day, cements Hogan’s legacy. HOGES explores the factors which shaped this success – and at what cost success might have come. It entwines the story of his amazing journey with that of his close family life, of his two great loves, the pain of divorce, his struggle with the intense scrutiny of life in the public eye, but also of his enduring friendship with Cornell and the rollercoaster ride of their careers. FMA’s Jo Porter and Seven’s Julie McGauran are Executive Producers, Kevin Carlin (Molly, Wentworth) is Co-Producer and Director, Brett Popplewell is Producer and the script is by Keith Thompson (The Sapphires) and Marieke Hardy (Packed To The Rafters, The Family Law). The Hoges Story PART ONE PART TWO Poolside at Granville baths, a young Paul Hogan cracks jokes and pashes While the success of Crocodile Dundee catapults Hoges onto the world Noelene, his childhood sweetheart. -
