Brome-Missisquoi-Perkins Hospital Foundation | fondationbmp.ca 3 A MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDATION

Mario Lagimonière Lola Landes President of the Board Executive Director of Directors

Dear Readers,

We are proud to present you with the annual report 2019-2020 of the BMP Foundation. Each year again, the redaction of this report represents a thorough reflection allowing us to refine our objectives, to celebrate the accomplishments of the past year and to move on with ambition and determination.

The 2019-2020 projects have had a positive impact on the image of our hospital for both patients and health care professionals. The support and encouragement of the Brome-Missisquoi community make these achievements possible and allow us to pursue our mission to improve the accessibility and the quality of health care at our hospital.

First and foremost we would like to highlight the projects with significant impact for the BMP Hospital such as the major redevelopment of the Orthopedic Clinic which was inaugurated in March 2020. Furthermore, the hospital obtained the Urgence amie des ainés certificate. A project combining both the acquisition of new equipment and specialized training to better serve our elderly patients. 2019-2020 Projects Positive change The Foundation has known several shifts in its permanent staff with the arrival of a new temporary resource (maternity leave replacement) and the transformation of the Executive Director position into two new Director positions. The Board of Directors proceeded with a major restructuration by electing a two-headed managament team. Decentralizing the operations will allow a better administrative management and be in favor of an efficient development of the Foundation. In spite of the personnel movement, our organization was able to continue its functions thanks to a solid office staff and Board of Directors in close collaboration with the health care professionals of the hospital and the general direction of the CIUSSS de l’Estrie - CHUS.

Acknowledgments Finally, we would like to thank our valuable league of volunteers and generous donors for their continued support in these challenging times. Their contribution allows us to renew our engagement to offer better health care to the Brome-Missisquoi community.

We would like to express our most sincere thanks to the members of the Foundation for their fabulous contribution to our accomplishments this year.

We are looking forward to 2020-2021 with determination and confidence.

4 Brome-Missisquoi-Perkins Hospital Foundation | fondationbmp.ca MESSAGE FROM THE CIUSSS de l’Estrie - CHUS

Robin-Marie Coleman Stéphane Tremblay Présidente-directrice Président-directeur général générale adjointe CIUSSS de l’Estrie - CHUS CIUSSS de l’Estrie - CHUS

Since the inception of the Brome-Missisquoi-Perkins Hospital Foundation in 1993, its members have been working relentlessly to improve the accessibility and quality of the medical services to the population of the Brome-Missisquoi region.

As a dedicated oraganization, the Foundation retains year after year the loyal help of donors, volunteers and numerous partners.

In support of the CIUSSS de l’Estrie – CHUS, the Brome-Missisquoi-Perkins Hospital Foundation contributes each year to accomplish projects such as infrastructure improvement or the acquisition of equipment to the benefit of the users. The inauguration of the new Bombardier-Beaudoin Orthopedic Clinic was made possible thanks to a $1.35 million contribution by the BMP Foundation. This amount made the redevelopment of the clinic and the purchase of new equipment possible. The expansion and modernisation of the clinic responds to the increasing demand and created greatly improved facilities for the clinical teams.

On behalf of the Brome-Missisquoi community and our users, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to all participants and donors for making possible the improvement, the quality and accessibility “For and with the users” of the RLS de la Pommeraie!

12 Brome-Missisquoi-Perkins Hospital Foundation | fondationbmp.ca FINANCIAL STATEMENTS

All funds raised are invested exclusively in projects and equipment for the Brome-Missisquoi-Perkins Hospital in Cowansville and its related services.

Brome-Missisquoi-Perkins Hospital Foundation | fondationbmp.ca 13 GREAT ACHIEVEMENTS

Acquisition of the MULTITRAC® BirthingBIRTHING chair promoting PAVILION active - $12 birth 000

The Foundation is very proud to present its newest acquisition, an innovative birthing chair promoting active birth. The Multitrac is a modular equipment, enabling active birthing and partner involvement during labour. It comprises an exercise ball, a « Tarzan » rope, a delivery bench and a chair for the partner. This technique already used in Europe allows a natural and safe delivery. Moreover, it is known that mobilization during active labour has several positive effects on childbirth, including reduced pain and fewer medical interventions.

Upgrading and purchasing of new equipment

OTHERBreastfeading DEPARTMENTS chairs - $12 - 000$251 424

This year, the BMP Foundation invested $12 000 in 15 new breastfeeding chairs for the birthing pavilion, the breastfeeding area of the emergency unit and other designated breast- feeding areas of the BMP Hospital. Different suitable and adjusted places for breastfeeding make a hospital visit more comfortable for young mothers.

As an « Ami des bébés » hospital we make continued efforts to promote and protect breast- feeding for mothers and their little babies.

Intensive care beds - $44 424

The BMP Foundation has accepted to fund the purchase of several intensive care beds of superior quality. Equipped with therapeutic surfaces, these beds prevent pressure sores and increase the patient’s comfort. Being user friendly for both the healthcare workers and the patient, these beds boost mobility which helps to treat and prevent pulmonary complications. Not only does this system allow the healthcare worker to weigh without having to move the patient, the bed easily conveys an unstable patient to the imaging department. Eliminating transfers to stretchers, the beds increase the comfort of the patient and make the tasks of hospital personnel easier. An alarm guarantees the patient’s security by warning the personnel as soon as the patient falls or gets out of the bed.

Urology equipment - $195 000

The Foundation contributed to the purchase of state-of-the-art equipment for a newly hired urologist at the BMP Hospital. Different diagnostic tests and surgeries in urology are being done at the BMP Hospital requiring the acquisition of specialized equipment. The cystoscope is a medical instrument enabling and urologist to detect anomalies in the patient’s bladder or uterus. The urethrotome is a surgical instrument for cutting a urethral stricture.

14 Brome-Missisquoi-Perkins Hospital Foundation | fondationbmp.ca GREAT ACHIEVEMENTS

Training by a lactation consultant - $40 000 The Foundation accepted to fund the training of lactation consultants. The recruitment of SPECIALIZEDa lactation resource TRAINING will allow us to remain – $50 the leader 000 in offering integrated care to families using our perinatal services.

The BMP Hospital has already a team of trained lactation consultants, certified by the international bureau, in place. Their presence allows us to maintain our quality standard of breastfeeding support. They support the healthcare workers (nurses and doctors) as well as the families in the community. The consultants work at the hospital, in the medical clinics and in the community.

EPICC Training - $10 000 As part of the quality improvement plan for the emergency service, a specialized training has been offered to the nursing staff of the BMP Hospital. The EPICC program (Emergency Practices, Interventions and Care – ) is a national Canadian training program for emergency nursing staff.

The training is based on the criteria of competence of emergency nursing care and aims to develop a systematic approach of a patient dealing with health problems at an emergency unit.

Yoga 4 cancer PATIENT SUPPORTThe ACTIVITIESBMP Foundation is proud(ONCOLOGY to collaborate with CLINIC) Yoga and Movement – $16 (Laura 000 Hernandez) and the CIUSSS de l’Estrie-CHUS to offer free yoga sessions specifically adapted to patients affected by or in remission from cancer.

The project, developed with Laura Hernandez, a certified “Yoga4cancer” professor and holistic wellness consultant, is open to all BMP Hospital patients currently receiving treatment (chemotherapy / radiotherapy) ” Residents of the Brome-Missisquoi region affected by cancer and receiving treatment at one of the CIUSSS de l’Estrie-CHUS facilities are also admitted.

Spiritual care A second initiative is the funding of service hours of a spiritual care advisor to support patients having a difficult time. The advisor meets with people during an individual session or addresses groups reserved for people who have been confronted with a cancer diagnostic.

Five participants have taken part in four sessions offered in 2019.

Brome-Missisquoi-Perkins Hospital Foundation | fondationbmp.ca 15 GREAT PROJECTS

“Amies des Aînés “ certification (gereatric emergencies) - $400 000 EMERGENCY SERVICE The elderly Brome-Missisquoi population, using the emergency service of the hospital, will benefit from a new approach specifically developed for their needs.

The objective of the two-year project (2019-2021) is to prevent elderly people from losing their autonomy by developing a solidified safety net for them before, during and after their stay at the emergency unit.

A training will be given to urgentologists, all medical unit staff and volunteers on best practices in gereatric emergency care. A specialized gereatric clinical pivot nurse will be added to the team coordinaing the services given to a patient during their stay and after their release from the emergency unit. A geriatric patient attendant will be assigned to help and assist patients with eating and drinking. The purchase of small adapted equipment will also improve their physical environment.

The criteria, serving as guidelines of this project, will be a first step in our application for “Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation” (GEDA), the official certification from the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP).

This $400 000 major innovative project is possible thanks to a major investment from a friend donor of the BMP Foundation.

Improve the functional aspect and capacity of theOPERATING operating block BLOCK The Foundation wishes to contribute to improve to the operating block of the BMP Hospital by adjusting the layout of the operating theatres and updating its equipment to the current standards. Whether a patient is treated for a hip replacement or an appendix removal, each and every patient will be guaranteed the best care in an up-to-date surgical environment with the best practices in health care.

Acquisition of a laprascopic tower for the operating block The operating block of the BMP Hospital is equiped with a laprascopic tower, the service life of which will soon expire. To allow surgeons to operate according to state-of-the-art procedures and to reduce the convalescence period for patients, the Foundation whishes to equip the operating block with an up-to-date high-tech laprascopic tower. The new equipment will not only facilitate the work of the surgeons, but also reduce the waiting time for surgical procedures.
