ZION LUTHERAN CHURCH

A Church of The Lutheran Church— Missouri

st Jesus Weeps for Jerusalem 420 1 St. SE Our Lord wept over Jerusalem for the destruction PO Box 118 that would soon come upon her. For she did not Gwinner, ND 58040 recognize the time of God’s visitation in Christ, who had come to bring her peace (Luke 19:41–48). www.ziongwinner.org Through His prophets God had consistently called His people to turn from their deceit and false Office 701-678-2401 worship. “But My people do not know the judgments of the Lord” (Jer. 8:4–12). They sought to establish their own righteousness rather than receive Christ’s Pastor Aaron M. Filipek righteousness through faith (Rom. 9:30–10:4). So it Cell 701-680-3837 was that God was in His temple to cleanse it, a Email: [email protected] precursor to the once-for-all cleansing from which He would accomplish in the temple of His own body on the cross. God grant us to know the things Parish Assistant: Tana McKenna that make for our peace—His visitation in the Word Email: [email protected] and —that by the Holy Spirit we may penitently confess “Jesus is Lord” (1 Cor. 12:1–11).

T Service of Prayer T

Hymn of Invocation: 873 Christ, Whose Glory Fills the Skies

Stand Opening Versicles L This is the day which the Lord has made; C let us rejoice and be glad in it. L From the rising of the sun to its setting, C the name of the Lord is to be praised. L Better is one day in Your courts than a thousand elsewhere; C I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked. L Make me to know Your ways, O Lord. C Teach me Your paths. L Sanctify us in Your truth. C Your Word is truth. L From the rising of the sun to its setting, C the name of the Lord is to be praised. C Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Sit Reading Jeremiah 8:4–12

4“You shall say to them, Thus says the LORD: When men fall, do they not rise again? If one turns away, does he not return? 5Why then has this people turned away in perpetual backsliding? They hold fast to deceit; they refuse to return. 6I have paid attention and listened, but they have not spoken rightly; no man relents of his evil, saying, ‘What have I done?’ Everyone turns to his own course, like a horse plunging headlong into battle. 7Even the stork in the knows her times,

2

and the turtledove, swallow, and crane keep the time of their coming, but my people know not the just decrees of the LORD. 8“How can you say, ‘We are wise, and the law of the LORD is with us’? But behold, the lying pen of the scribes has made it into a lie. 9The wise men shall be put to shame; they shall be dismayed and taken; behold, they have rejected the word of the LORD, so what wisdom is in them? 10Therefore I will give their wives to others and their fields to conquerors, because from the least to the greatest everyone is greedy for unjust gain; from prophet to priest, everyone deals falsely. 11They have healed the wound of my people lightly, saying, ‘Peace, peace,’ when there is no peace. 12Were they ashamed when they committed abomination? No, they were not at all ashamed; they did not know how to blush. Therefore they shall fall among the fallen; when I punish them, they shall be overthrown, says the LORD”. L This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

Reading 1 Corinthians 12:1–11 1Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. 3Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit. 4Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; 6and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God 3

who empowers them all in everyone. 7To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. L This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

Reading Luke 19:41–48 L A reading from St. Luke, the nineteenth chapter. 41When [Jesus] drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, 42saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side 44and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.” 45And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold, 46saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a den of robbers.” 47And he was teaching daily in the temple. The chief priests and the scribes and the principal men of the people were seeking to destroy him, 48but they did not find anything they could do, for all the people were hanging on his words. L This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

Responsory L Forever, O Lord, Your Word is firmly set in the heavens. C Lord, I love the habitation of Your house and the place where Your glory dwells. L Blessed are those who hear the Word of God and keep it. C Lord, I love the habitation of Your house and the place where Your glory dwells. L Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. C Lord, I love the habitation of Your house and the place where Your glory dwells. 4

Stand C You shall have no other gods. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Honor your father and your mother. You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

Apostles’ Creed C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of , the of , the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen.

Lord’s Prayer C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth 5

as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Hymn of the Day: 644 The Church’s One Foundation

Stand Prayer of the Church L In peace, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy.

L In thanksgiving for Christ, in whom we know the things that make for peace, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy.

L For pure teaching in the Church and lives lived according to our Father’s Word, that His name would be hallowed among us, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy.

L For the relief agencies of the Synod as they bring the comfort of God’s kingdom to those in suffering, that forgiveness would be proclaimed throughout the world and His mercy be made known to all, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy.

L For the government and those given authority to break and hinder the plans of the wicked and reward and encourage whatever is righteous and good, that through them God would bring about His good and gracious will, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy.

6

L For wisdom to be generous with our daily bread as God is generous to us, that we would be defended from all greed and remember that our security is not in wealth but in His abundant care, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy.

L For an increase of love and forgiveness among us, that Satan would not divide us, and that God would defend us from grudges, animosity and disdain that would blind us to His love, which embraces even His enemies, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy.

L For defense from temptation and every craft of the devil, that by His Spirit we would always cling to His Word and remain steadfast in the faith, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy.

L For the afflicted in body and soul and for those who are in any lack, especially Sandy, Steve, and Crysten, that God would restore them and keep us all in the ark of His Church until His final day of visitation, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy.

L This morning and throughout this week we hold before You in prayer Rodney and Sandy Mathias. C Heavenly Father, we ask that in Your unconditional love that you would protect Rodney and Sandy from all physical harm and danger and that You would keep them in the certainty of their salvation that they have by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. We also pray that You would enable us, this congregation of Zion, to hold Rodney and Sandy in our prayers this week and let them know that we love them in Jesus Christ. L We know that these petitions are pleasing to You, heavenly Father, and that You hear them for the sake of Christ Jesus, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen.

Collect of the Day L O God, You declare Your almighty power above all in showing mercy and pity. Mercifully grant us such a measure of Your grace that we may obtain Your gracious promises and be made partakers of Your heavenly treasures; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen.

7

Collect for the Word L Blessed Lord, You have caused all Holy Scriptures to be written for our learning. Grant that we may so hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them that, by the patience and comfort of Your holy Word, we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen.

Morning Prayer C I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You.

For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me.

Blessing L Let us bless the Lord. C Thanks be to God. L The almighty and merciful Lord, the Father, the T Son, and the Holy Spirit, bless and preserve us. C Amen.
