In reality, however, we live in the “administrative state”: individuals and firms (and, thus, most clients) are most immediately and significantly affected not by the actions of Congress, courts, or the President, but rather by those of administrative agencies.     Sports Franchise Navigates Immigration Law to Bring International Superstar Pelé to the United States By Michael Wildes When the ownership of the revitalized New York Cosmos began considering ways to create excitement about its debut of its franchise in the Major League Soccer league in 2013, one of the most obvious ideas was to embrace its glorious past when the Cosmos rose to national prominence during the late 1970s and early 1980s as part of the North American Soccer League or “NASL.” There was no better way to do that than to bring in the face of that franchise, and the entire NASL for that matter — Pelé. But there was a problem with bringing in Pelé, whose formal name is Edson Arantes Do Nascimento. He would need an “O-1” visa. Because he is a foreign citizen from Brazil, Pelé needed an “assist” from an immigration law firm as he sought to comply with his new employment goals in the United States. As an "Alien of Extraordinary Ability," hired to come to our country to help rebuild the world famous professional soccer team, Pelé was required to secure an O-1 visa in the field of athletics before he was able to begin his employment for the team's front office. But too many could not. The K-1 Visa that allows US citizens to sponsor their significant other’s citizenship does not include same-sex partners. Why? And what is the likelihood of this changing? This has got to change. Michael Wildes hopes to change it. A distinguished immigration attorney and former Mayor of Englewood, NJ, Wildes is a proponent of equality and therein fair and just immigration reform, specifically for the K-1 Visa. In Chicago, Rep. Luis Gutierrez has been the person to speak out about this issue, choosing to continue his work on much needed immigration reform rather than run for mayor. A mayoral candidate would have to focus on local issues and immigration is a federal issue. The movement for immigration reform is growing stronger and Gutierrez has been pressuring the Obama Administration and Congress to move faster. When Gutierrez first introduced an immigration reform bill in the U.S. House, the inclusion of same-sex partner rights was too politically risky, but he believes the coalition in favor of immigration reform is now strong enough to make the bill 'truly inclusive'. "The underlying part of any comprehensive immigration bill is family unity," Gutierrez said in an interview tith the Chicago Tribune.
