Faire découvrir l'histoire et le patrimoine du cinéma grâce à des rétrospectives sur des cinématographies nationales, des hommages aux auteurs majeurs ou méconnus du cinéma, des programmations thématiques. Accompagner les scénaristes et les réalisateurs dans leurs travaux d’écriture en invitant des comédiens professionnels à lire en public des scénarios de premiers longs métrages, avant leur réalisation. Former un nouveau public pour le cinéma européen en privilégiant la participation des jeunes spectateurs au Festival et en organisant des leçons de cinéma animées par des créateurs et des artistes. Mettre en valeur la diversité du cinéma européen en réunissant des professionnels sur les questions de la production et de la circulation des œuvres du cinéma européen. A l’issue du Festival, public et jurys remettent 200 000 euros de prix aux lauréats. D’autres films sont présentés hors compétition, dans le cadre des trois sections « Figures libres », « Plans suivants » et « Panorama fémis ». Forum des Réalisateurs ::: chaque jour, c’est le lieu de rencontres et de débats entre les réalisateurs, les équipes des films et le public. Il a tenu parole puisque « Entre les murs » de Laurent Can- tet et « Gomorra » de Matteo Garrone culminent au palmarès de cette 61ème édition. Ces deux films représentent cette nouvelle tendance confirmée du cinéma visant à abolir ou confondre les li- mites entre le réel et la fiction. L'un reconstruit, à partir d'un livre document, l'histoire de la vie scolaire d'une vingtaine de jeunes « difficiles » d'un lycée du 20ème arrondissement de Paris; l'autre plonge audacieusement sa caméra dans un quartier miséreux de la banlieue de Naples où la mafia locale, la Camorra, organise des trafics en tous genres et règne par une sordide violence. Dans les deux cas, du cinéma élémentaire et essentiel, sans digressions romanesques ni actes spectacu- laires: l'imaginaire se nourrit si intensément du vécu qu'il parvient à en donner une vision « autre » parfaite- ment crédible. Alors que dans le même ordre d'idée, le jury cannois a également distingué « Le silence de Lorna » des Frères Dardenne, déjà à l'affiche, et « Che » de Steven Soderbergh qu'on verra beaucoup plus tard, on ne comprend vraiment pas comment il a pu ignorer la très étonnante « Valse avec Bachir » : un documentaire animé conçu par l'israélien Ari Folman comme une enquête personnelle et historique pour retrouver « sa » mémoire effa- cée des massacres de Sabra et Chatila pendant la première guerre du Liban.
