ABOUT THE POSITION: Under administrative direction from the City Manager, the Chief of Police will serve as the department manager and plan, direct, review and manage the staff, operations and services of the Police Department; functional areas of responsibility include the enforcement of laws and the prevention of crimes; to ensure services that maintain the safety and security of the citizens of Wheatland; to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other law enforcement agencies; to provide highly complex technical and administrative support to the City Manager; and to perform a variety of duties relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge of):

Operations, services and activities of a municipal law enforcement agency; Modern law enforcement principles, practices, methods, and techniques; Advanced methods and techniques of conducting criminal investigations; Methods and techniques on the use and care and of specialized police equipment, including firearms; Concepts, theories and principles of crime prevention programs; Regulations and laws governing the authority and use of police powers; Principles and practices of budget development and administration; Principles and practices of public relations; Court rules and processes; Rules and regulations governing chain of custody and evidence; Current literature, laws, and regulations impacting police-related services; Principles and practices of supervision, training and performance evaluation; Federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations.

Education: Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in criminology, police science, public administration, business administration, or a related field.

Experience: Six years of increasingly responsible law enforcement experience, with at least two years of command experience.

License, Certificate, Registration Requirements: Possession of a valid California driver license appropriate for equipment operated. Possession of P.O.S.T. Executive or Management certificate issued by the State of California is recommended.

Salary Range: DOQE. Wheatland is not a member of the California Public Employees Retirement System (PERS).
