    List of horse breeds 1 List of horse breeds This page is a list of horse and pony breeds, and also includes terms used to describe types of horse that are not breeds but are commonly mistaken for breeds. While there is no scientifically accepted definition of the term "breed,"[1] a breed is defined generally as having distinct true-breeding characteristics over a number of generations; its members may be called "purebred".     the Color Breed 2017 PtHA Youth Judging Contest Youth from all over the nation gathered at the Built Ford Tough Livestock Arena for the 4th annual Youth Judging Contest. Participants judged Western Pleasure, Ranch Riding, Western Horsemanship, Western Riding, Hunter Under Saddle, Hunt Seat Equitation, Halter Performance Geldings and Halter Performance Mares classes. Not only did participants judge classes they also gave reasons for selected classes. The Youth Judging Contest, held in conjunction with the Pinto World Championship, consisted of team competition and individual competition. This year there were over 10 teams that competed. photo by: Pinto Horse Association Illinois Quarter horse took the top spot Above: the Illinois Quarter Horse Team in the Senior Youth Overall division and Below: Chouteau Team the Chouteau team became the overall winner within the Junior Youth division.     Arabian Coat Color Patterns Copyright 2011 Brenda Wahler In the Arabian breed, there are three unusual coat colors or patterns that occur in some purebred horses. The first is sabino, the only white spotting pattern seen in purebred Arabians, characterized by bold white face and leg markings, and, in some cases, body spotting. The second pattern is rabicano, a roan-like intermixture of white and dark hairs. Both sabino and rabicano horses are often registered by their base coat color, with white patterns noted as markings, but some extensively marked individuals have been registered as “roan,” even though true roan is a separate coat color. The third unusual coat color is dominant white, a mutation characterized by a predominantly white hair coat and pink skin, present at birth. All Arabians in the United States currently known to be dominant white trace to a single stallion, foaled in 1996, verified to be the offspring of his registered Arabian parents, both of whom were solid-colored. It is difficult to know how many Arabians have these unusual colors as they are often not searchable in registration records. For many years, Arabians with dominant white, body spots, or simply “too much white” were discouraged from registration, and white body markings were penalized in halter classes. The exclusion of boldly-marked “cropout” horses was also common in other registries, leading to the formation of a number of color breed associations. However, when parentage verification became possible, horses born with “too much” white could be confirmed as the offspring of their stated parents, and breed registries generally relaxed their rules or policies that previously excluded such animals.

    The Color Breed Futurity will be held each year in conjunction with the Color Breed Congress Show. Eligibility To be eligible to participate in the Color Breed Futurity, a horse/long ear must be sired by a stallion/jack who has been nominated into the Color Breed Futurity the year prior to its foaling year. If eligible, horses/long ears may be enrolled at any time beginning as weanlings through their 3-year-old year. Weanling enrollment begins at one time payment of $50 and increases with the age of the animal. Membership To be eligible to participate in the Color Breed Futurity all stallion/jack owners must be current PtHA members. All owners and exhibitors of the foals nominated must be current PtHA members. Exhibitors in Amateur Color Breed Futurity classes must have a PtHA Amateur card. Classes Offered The Color Breed Futurity classes will be offered in conjunction with the Color Breed Congress Show in November. Foals entered in a Color Breed Futurity class will have to be registered according to their breeding and enter the corresponding class during the Color Breed Congress. Futurity classes will be $100 per class, plus the cost of the corresponding class at the Color Breed Congress. If foal is not eligible for a corresponding class at Color Breed Congress, it must be registered with PtHA in the Solid division. Their base coats are the same colors as those of other breeds, but super- imposed over these colors are a variety of white spotting patterns. The three patterns recognized by APHA are tobiano, overo and tovero. The ability to recognize these patterns and under- stand the genetics behind them is essential for Paint Horse breeders. Being knowledgeable about coat pat- terns helps breeders and owners accurately describe their horses. Understanding the genetics that produce these patterns helps breeders increase the proportion of spotted horses in their foal crops.

    Hippology Introduction Chapter 3: Breeds Shire: *The Shire horse is a draft breed that originated in England. *This breed comes many colors, but most prominently black, bay, and gray. *Mares usually stand about 16 hands, and stallions about 17 hands. *One distinguishing feature is that they have long white stockings with long hairs known as feathers. *This breed is a very popular pulling horse. They were originally used for plowing and pulling the ale carts to the breweries, but now have many uses. *Ideally this breed should have: - a long and lean head with large eyes - a long, arched, muscular, neck - a wide and deep shoulder and chest -a short, strong back -long, wide hindquarters -silky, and straight feathering, but not in excess *Shires are known to at risk for developing chromic progressive lymphedema. *Goliath, a Shire, held the Guiness Book of World Record’s record for tallest horse at 19.0 hans until his death in 2001. In 1848 a 21.2 hand horse named Mammoth was also thought to be a Shire. Clydesdale: *The Clydesdale is a draft breed that originated from Scotland, in that area named such. *These horses are often bay in color with white markings( thought to be caused by sabino genetics) but can also come in roan, black, grey, and chestnut. They have extensive feathering that goes further up the legs than seen in Shires. *Clydesdales stand about 16 to 18 hands, and weight about 1,800 to 2,000 pounds with some of the mature males surpassing these averages. *The breed was originally used for agriculture and hauling and is still used for pulling purposes today, along with other varied uses.
