In the strange times through which we are living, it may be even more important to stay in touch with friends and neighbours. As usual, PINS will produce its Christmas greetings page in the Parish Magazine.

Thanks to your generosity in previous years we have been able to clean and paint most of the finger posts in our area. We have also bought a picnic bench for the playground, contributed to the new warning lights at the school and bought a further 100 daffodil bulbs to go around the war memorial.

If you would like to support PiNS in our work in the Parish and send Christmas greetings to your local friends and neighbours, and save the cost of cards and stamps, please send us your names as you would like to see them in the magazine and a donation. Also, if you have any suggestions for other projects you would like considered, please also let us know.

All you have to do is, before Thursday 5th November,(so that there is time to prepare and catch the magazine copy date):

The actual cards are not in black and white - they are in colour Whilst we weren't able to enjoy our traditional Children's Week this year we were able to offer a Creative Challenge and a Summer Trail for children to enjoy with their families. OUR BRILLIANTLY CREATIVE PRIZE WINNERS ARE: We had lots of fabulous entries for the Challenge - models, paintings and cakes all interpreting the 'Up, Up and Away' theme.

Christian Parker (8yrs) for Amy Warlow (9yrs) for baking Beth Cieeve (9yrs) for her his stunning wearable chicken a beautiful gingerbread house vibrant picture of chatty birds model - taking inspiration from decorated with balloons. migrating to far away lands. the battery hens his family adopted over the summer.

Katie (15yrs) and Daniei Luca Brady-Coiiins (6yrs) Aivar Rowlinson (4yrs) Callaghan (10yrs) made both a balloon cake Both shooting for the stars with out of this world rockets, which and a kite decorated with all brought such big smiles to both their and our faces we simply manner of flying objects. couldn't choose between them!

32 Finally the pinnacle of creative endeavour was achieved by Evelyn (9yrs) and George Jacobs (7yrs). Inspired by their visit to the Southampton Flying Museum they worked together to make an absolutely stunning flying boat model which they named the Alicorn (flying unicorn). Evelyn took charge of decorat ing the fusillage with Alicorn paintings and George managed propulsion fitting lolly stick propellers for ice smooth flight.

Many of you may have noticed the odd posters, flags, dinosaurs, and space puzzles around the villages over the last few months as we took over nine of our favourite spots to create a Summer Trail through past Children's Weeks. We had lots of lovely messages from some of those who got involved and we hope everyone enjoyed getting out and about exploring in the sunshine.

The trail ended with a locked treasure box with a secret surprise for those who managed to work out the code from the clues in the last Parish Magazine. For anyone who had a go at cracking the code it was: 5 4 9 1

The trail has ended now, but there is a pin badge for everyone who did get involved at any stage of the trail. Email us at [email protected] if you would like one (or morel) and we shall get them to you!

Thank you to all those who submitted entries to this year's Children's Week Creative Challenge or who took part in the Summer Trail - reminding us all in these difficult times, that we are blessed with a wealth of talented and imaginative young people and there is still lots of fun and adventure to be had in our close knit community. We look forward to seeing everyone when we can meet up again safely.

Ultimate success also depended on Range and Direction Finding (RDF)chains covering the approaches to UK. This later became known as RADAR (Radio Direction and Ranging) which could detect aircraft out to about 85 miles. RDF was augmented by visual reporting by civilian members of the Observer Corps and a sophisticated system of command and control between various headquarters, air stations and outposts. Anti aircraft artillery, barrage balloon and searchlight batteries were manned by the Royal Artillery. Above - Postcard from the early ZO^^C showing the pond at Soberton Heath looking very neat and well-tended. The origins of the pond are not known and it is not shown in the Tithe Map of 1842. Below - In the mid 20thC the pond was well known for its goldfish (bottom middle, 1974) and on sunny Bank Holidays, there would often be a line of cars parked down the road from visitors. This year, we were lucky enough to have the sunniest spring on record, matched only by 3 other summers - one of which was 1976 and many of us will remember the drought and heatwave that year. In 1976 there was a crisis at the pond as it dried up and the fish became distressed. Bill & Beth Harris (bottom right), who lived at Ivy Cottage opposite, rigged up an ingenious system using a Hoovermatic washing machine, of pumping water from their well, across the road to the pond. Eventually though, the fish had to be rescued and some were temporarily housed locally and the rest were taken by the RSPCA, to be returned when conditions improved. The pond was excavated and cleaned out (bottom left) and the goldfish were returned in October 1976.
