Volume 07 - 05 May 2007 FROM THE LEFT SEAT Len Alt, President Spring greetings. With the good weather finally arrived I hope you are all getting in some great flights. Below see Dave Riedel enjoying the evening air above Warrenton Air Park in his new PPG Quad, the latest addition to the long list at WAP of strange contraptions that will fly. With the great weather comes a welcome increase in flying activity at the Air Park. As we begin the new flying season let’s take a minute to focus on safety in all we do, on the ground as well as in the air. We’ll have more aircraft moving in the skies and over the ground. At the Air Park we have a wide range of aircraft types, with very different operating characteristics, speeds, and takeoff and landing procedures. Please be extra careful of the other guy, especially since in many cases the other guy at Warrenton Air Park is a relatively new pilot with limited experience. If you see someone doing something unsafe, take a minute to discuss it with them and point out a better procedure. If you would prefer not to do that, contact me and I will speak with the other guy and keep your name out of it. You may find out the other pilot was not aware of the hazard created and appreciates the heads up. They keep the windshield and window surfaces clean and help prevent vandalism and theft. The Lancair ES Canopy Cover is custom-designed for each model, as well as your aircraft's specific antenna and temperature probe placements, if applicable. The Canopy Cover is designed to enclose the windshield, side windows and canopy roof. The Canopy Cover attaches using adjustable "belly straps", which run under the belly and connect to the other side of the cover with a quick-release plastic buckle. When requested, it is also sometimes possible to design Canopy covers that can attach to the aircraft fuselage using pop-riveted snap-heads at the rear and snap-head screws on the engine cowl. This cover type is made from Silver Acrylic Sunbrella canvas and is 100% lined with a soft and smooth microfiber. Bruce's Custom Covers developed this material combination especially for aircraft protection. The outer material is medium weight and treated for water resistance, UV resistance and anti-static buildup. The inner lining is a very soft and smooth microfiber to prevent scratching. -

Executive Summary This report briefly describes the development of the three preliminary configuration designs proposed for the Meridian UAV. This report details the selection of the primary configuration and further, more detailed, analysis including Class II weight and Balance, Class II Stability and Control, Performance Analyses, Systems Design, Class II landing gear, structural arrangement, a manufacturing breakdown and a cost analysis. The design mission for this aircraft is to takeoff from a snow or ice runway, fly to a designated area, then use low frequency radar to perform measurements of ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica. Three designs were developed: • A Monoplane with Structurally Integrated Antennas • A Monoplane with Antennas Hanging from the Wing • A Biplane with Antennas Structurally Integrated Into the Lower Wing The monoplane with antennas hanging from the wing was selected as the primary configuration for further development. Yes, here we are again in the last few bars of the annual melody which goes by the title of Another Year in Our Lives. In my case (and I hope yours) it’s a great tune but, and I don’t want to appear Ygrumpy, the conductor seems to be playing through the chart much faster than he used to. Perhaps it’s just my imagination because, as I get older, I can now get my head around some of the more difficult phrases. As I write the first few lines of this Christmas edition of Safety Spot, Ho Ho, Hum Hum, I’m reminded of the advice given to me by an old(er) muso friend of mine when I asked him how on earth we were supposed to fit all those notes into one particularly busy phrase. “Oh,” he said, “I only play every other note, there’s plenty of time for that.” There’s a lesson in there somewhere! I hope that you and those around you are well and you haven’t spent so much of your budget on your lovely flying machine (if of course, you are lucky enough to own such a craft) that you’ve had to cut down on the heating. Whilst I’m on the subject of heating, take a look at the picture supplied by LAAer Chris Marsh showing the warm-air engine de-humidifier keeping the internals of his Van’s RV-9’s Lycoming O-320 nice and, well, de-humidified. -

Don’t forget to socialize There are a number of benefits to mixing in a group of people who share the same interests or requirements. In this case I’m obviously talking about our club, but it works for many other aspects in life as well. I know that life would have been far more difficult if we hadn’t been in contact with other parents of special needs children too. Or sharing information with owners of other similar aircraft or cars. In CRAC’s case the benefits, for me, have included absorbing the general attitude to flight safety and ‘doing the job correctly’. Once a pilot is past the requirement to take an instructor along for every flight we run the risk of imposing our own idiosyncrasies or simply forgetting some processes. I’ve mentioned it before as an example, but you only have to look at the number of drivers who forget how to use a turn signal after they finish their training. If you fly with a group of CRAC pilots (in my experience anyway), you’ll always hear great radio calls and position reports, and be exposed to some very good airmanship. Other benefits, however, are just plain good fun. We had the CRAC Mid-winter meal a few days ago as I write this, and it was very poorly attended. Admittedly the venue and times had changed since it was first announced, and it was in the middle of some fairly extreme weather, but it was thoroughly enjoyable. The food was great and the company was even better. -
