Workshop #1 Clip Report March 31, 2014 Idaho Commission for Libraries Make It at the Library Year 2 Workshop #1 Clip Report March 31, 2014 OVERVIEW COMMposition leveraged ICfL’s first “Make It at the Library” Year 2 workshop Feb. 24-25 to garner earned media coverage of the effort throughout Idaho. The agency created a media alert highlighting the visual opportunities presented by the BrickLab and DiscoverE! Kit projects for TV stations. It also retained a professional photographer to capture images of each library’s team to help localize the story in markets throughout the state, and then made them available via Flickr at http://www.flickr.com/photos/commposition/collections/72157641620897525/. COMMposition pitched the story to daily and weekly newspapers statewide via phone and then emailed them links to photos of local library staff at the workshop, photo captions, and an existing press release regarding Year 2 that ICfL had recently disseminated. Although we culled the images, in hindsight it would be best to identify the single-best image for each media outlet. We also learned via follow-up calls that most editors were not comfortable with downloading images from Flickr and other photo websites and would prefer the images were emailed directly to them. o Our email fulfillment was lengthy and more complicated than necessary, so we need to simplify our communications. Next time COMMposition will craft a customized photo release consisting of a headline, extended caption, contact info, and one attached photo. o In the future we should leverage any Boise TV coverage by pitching the stories to network affiliates in other markets: – KBOI (CBS) — KIDK in Idaho Falls; KLEW in Lewiston; KREM in Spokane; KMVT in Twin Falls – KTVB (NBC) — KPVI in Pocatello; KHQ in Spokane – KIVI (ABC) and KNIN (FOX) — KIFI (ABC) and KXPI (FOX) in Idaho Falls; KAYU (FOX) and KXLY (ABC) in Spokane o On an ongoing basis, we should encourage participating libraries to forward photography of noteworthy projects resulting from the Make It at the Library program to COMMposition and/or the editors of their local papers. COMMPOSITION PUBLIC RELATIONS MAKE IT AT THE LIBRARY YEAR 2 WORKSHOP #1 CLIP REPORT MARCH 31, 2014 • PAGE 3 OF 3 ANALYSIS • Room for improvement (cont.) o Meanwhile, it is not too late to pitch participating library staff to TV talk shows in their markets: – Boise — KIVI (in studio on “Good Morning Idaho”) and KTVB (live remote during morning newscast; in studio interview at noon and/or 4 p.m.) – Idaho Falls — KIFI’s “Local News 8 This Morning” – Twin Falls — KMVT’s “Rise & Shine” morning show and noon newscast – Spokane — “KHQ Today Show” or KXLY’s “Good Morning Northwest” January 24, 2014 FOR MORE INFORMATION: Erica Compton, [email protected], 208.639.4144 Teresa Lipus, [email protected], 208.334.2150 Tony Harrison, [email protected], 208.880.9814 ***** MEDIA ALERT ***** Maker movement in Idaho libraries expands in year two GREAT Two-dozen librarians from across the state will be assembling BrickLab VISUALS and Discover E! In 2013, five libraries including Ada Community Library; Community Library Network, Hayden; Gooding Public Library; Meridian District Library; and Snake River School Community Library, Blackfoot fully embraced “making” and pushed the boundaries of programming with tweens and teens—exceeding expectations and demonstrating innovation and drive in the implementation of the project. The Commission is pleased to announce that the following six libraries from around the state have been invited to participate in the second year of the project: • Aberdeen District Library • Buhl Public Library • East Bonner County District Library, Sandpoint • Jerome Public Library • Portneuf District Library, Chubbuck • Twin Falls Public Library Each of these libraries has committed two staff to participate in the year-long project, which encourages the use of new technologies and provides the necessary materials and training for library staff to implement creative, STEAM-based (science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics) programming. Tools will include state-of-the-art robotic, 3D printing, e-textile, and engineering resources. Libraries from the first year of the project have also committed one new staff member to participate in the second year in order to expand programming in their libraries. “We welcome these new staff members to the project and look forward to watching the learning, the making, and the creativity start to happen,” said Erica Compton, project coordinator at the Commission. 325 West State Street.
