Page 92 Journalism Education Volume 1 number 1 Newsreaders as eye candy: the hidden agenda of public service broadcasting Claire Wolfe and Dr. Barbara Mitra Worcester University Abstract: Television news adds to the wider discourses that permeate society about feminine beauty. Women still face much greater pressure than men regarding their physical appearance and body image. How they look mat- ters, especially with regards to newsreaders and broad- casters. We investigated the opinions of journalists and audiences about the appearance of women newsreaders and found that physical appearance plays a significant role for female presenters. Also, our research suggests that where women are glamorised they are belittled in terms of intelligence and their abilities. The audience for television news are aware of the narrow versions of beau- ty that are being presented and note that they would like to see more diverse representations of women reading the news. Keywords: newsreaders, gender, sexualisation, age, representation, beauty, television news, discourse. Aims This study investigates the physical appearance of male and female newsreaders in Eng- land with reference to age, credibility and industry response. We argue that television news implicitly promotes stereotypical physical attractiveness, particularly for women. Recent research demonstrates that television is still the main source of news for many older people (Clausen, 2004 cited in Weibel, Wissmath and Groner, 2008, p.466) and hence forms part of the discourses that permeate society (Giles, 2009, p.318). Rewiring the Text: Adaptation and Translation in the Digital Heterogossia. Richard Berger. A thesis in partial fulfilment of the requirements of Bournemouth University for the degree of Philosophy Doctorate. March 2005. Bournemouth University. Rewiring the Text: Abstract. This dissertation is concerned with adaptation, in the context of new emerging digital media platforms. The project proposes that new media has allowed for the creation of a universal digital heteroglossia; a heteroglossia that contains the plurality of the unstable utterances of cinema, radio, television, the web and computer games. This has allowed for the process of adaptation to become more instantaneous in the simultaneous deployment of narratives across the digital heteroglossia. Therefore, the process of adaptation is far more dialogical, with previous variants of narratives being ‘rewired’ and gaining an ‘afterlife’ through adaptation, and through the creation of new variants and versions. The Internet has allowed for adaptation to move into a participatory mode, where fanfic writers fill in ‘gaps’ left by the creators of televisual and filmic texts. Videogames, based on pre-existing or co-existing texts, mean that players can experience moments of supreme and non-permanent adaptation themselves. This thesis suggests that this participation has democratised adaptation, and has fundamentally altered the nature of ‘traditional’ adaptation. The thesis concludes that, due to a digital heteroglossia, ‘traditional’ adaptation will decline, as the process becomes more plural and instantaneous. With previous variants of narratives being summoned back into life - due to adaptation, remaking and refashioning - it is increasingly unlikely that ‘fidelity’ strategies of adaptation will continue to be the dominant discourse, as all variants of narratives begin to exist in a dialogical plurality with one another; a mutual exchange of fluctuating source and target texts, cross-referenced through intertextuality and assembling a collage of influences.

BBC Children in Need History BBC Children in Need is the BBC’s UK charity. Since 1980, it has raised more than £1 billion for disadvantaged children and young people in the UK. Their aim is to improve the lives of thousands of children by ensuring that their childhood is safe, happy and secure. They also want every child to have the chance to do their best in life. The Beginnings In 1927, the BBC broadcast its first ever appeal for children. This was a five-minute radio broadcast on Christmas Day which raised about £1143 (about the same as £27,150 nowadays) and supported four well-known children’s charities. In 1955, the first televised appeal was presented by Sooty and Harry Corbett on Christmas Day. These Christmas Day appeals continued to be broadcast on television and radio until 1979, raising more than £625,000. In November 1980, the appeal was broadcast on BBC One in a different format as a telethon, hosted by Terry Wogan, Sue Lawley and Esther Rantzen. Terry Wogan continued as the main presenter until 2014 with a variety of co- presenters, including: • Joanna Lumley; • Tess Daly; • Andi Peters; • Fearne Cotton. • Natasha Kaplinsky; Pudsey Bear Pudsey Bear first appeared in 1985. He was designed by Joanna Ball, a BBC graphic designer, who named him after the West Yorkshire town where she was born.
