The dissertation's meta-subjects are mediation, classification, and patronage in the presentation of music via distribution channels capable of reaching widespread audiences. The dissertation also addresses questions of race in the representation of jazz on radio. A central claim of the dissertation is that a given direction in jazz radio programming reflects the ideological, aesthetic, and political imperatives of a given broadcasting entity. I further argue that this ideological deployment of jazz can appear as conservative or progressive programming philosophies, and that these tendencies reflect discursive struggles over the identity of jazz. The first chapter, "Jazz on Noncommercial Radio," describes in some detail the current (circa 2013) taxonomy of American jazz radio. The remaining chapters are case studies of different aspects of jazz radio in the United States. Chapter 2, "Jazz is on the Left End of the Dial," presents considerable detail to the way the music is positioned on specific noncommercial stations. Chapter 3, "Duke Ellington and Radio," uses Ellington's multifaceted radio career (1925-1953) as radio bandleader, radio celebrity, and celebrity DJ to examine the medium's shifting relationship with jazz and black American creative ambition. -

Reynolds, Professor of Music at the University of California, Davis, has identified and collected sheet music written by women composers active in North America and England. This collection contains over 3000 songs and song publications mostly published between 1850 and 1950. The collection is primarily made up of songs, but there are also many works for solo piano as well as anthems and part songs. In addition there are books written by the women song composers, a letter written by Virginia Gabriel in the 1860s, and four letters by Mrs. H.H.A. Beach to James Francis Cooke from the 1920s. S Original Radio Girl
Easton’s Original Radio Girl From the Historical Society of Easton’s Year of the Woman Series. Leonore Vonderlieth went by the stage name Vaughn De Leath. Born in 1894 in Mount Pulaski, Illinois, De Leath was certainly one of the earliest singers to appear on radio when she went on the air in January of 1920 singing “Swanee River” during a broadcast from New York City’s World Tower Station. She thereafter claimed to have been the first female singer to perform on live radio, thus adopting the title of “The Original Radio Girl.” From page 27 of the February 1923 edition of Wireless Age: “Thus far no one has come forward to dispute Vaughn De Leath’s claim of being “the original radio girl.” Probably no one will, for the letters she has from her invisible audience are dated months before radio entertainment became everybody’s job. Her first radio appearance was in the early days of 1920, in the World Tower Station, New York City. Even then she sensed radio’s impending popularity, and she stoutly defended the latest of arts and sciences against those who contended it would not last.” Vaughn De Leath in the mid-1920’s She was one of the most popular recording artists of the early 20th century. In 1924, she married artist Livingston Geer, and sometime around 1926, they purchased 910 Sport Hill Road as their summer residence. She commuted once a week to perform and host the “Voice of Firestone” on NBC radio in New York City. Her original 1927 recording “Are You Lonesome Tonight” would be sung 33 years later by Elvis Presley. -

History of Communications Media Class 6 [email protected] 1 What We Will Cover Today • Radio – Origins – The Emergence of Broadcasting – The Rise of the Networks – Programming – The Impact of Television – FM • Phonograph – Origins – Timeline – The Impact of the Phonograph 2 Origins of Radio • James Clerk Maxwell’s theory had predicted the existence of electromagnetic waves that traveled through space at the speed of light – Predicted that these waves could be generated by electrical oscillations – Predicted that they could be detected • Heinrich Hertz in 1886 devised an experiment to detect such waves. Hertz - Heinrich Hertz (1857-1894) deduced from James Clerk Maxwell’s theory that electromagnetic waves, generated by a changing or oscillating electric current, traveled through space with the same velocity as light. This suggested an experiment. He connected two ends of a coil of wire to the opposite sides of a small gap and then shot a high- voltage spark across the gap. Hertz found that as the spark jumped the gap, a much smaller spark flowed between two other wires, similarly configured, on the other side of the room. 3 Origins of Radio - 2 • Hertz’ experiments showed that the waves: – Conformed to Maxwell’s theory – Had many of the same properties as light except that the wave lengths were much longer than those of light – several meters as opposed to fractions of a millimeter. 4 Origins of Radio - 3 • Edouard Branly & Oliver Lodge perfected a coherer • Alexander Popov used a coherer attached to a vertical wire to detect thunderstorms in advance • William Crookes published an article on electricity which noted the possibility of using “electrical rays” for “transmitting and receiving intelligence” Branly Coherer – Branly discovered that loose metal filings in a glass tube (which normally have very high electrical resistance) would lose their resistance in the presence of electrical oscillations, cohering and thereby becoming a conductor. -

ASCAP Foundation President Paul Williams and Executive Director Colleen McDonough hosted the event which also honored a wide variety of scholarship and award recipients, all of whom benefit from ASCAP Foundation programs.
