Schwenk, Coordinator Director of Health and Physical Education University of Montana THEADMINISTRATOR of athletics in a college or university is faced with a formidable task. He is ie charge of finances; re- sponsible for maintaining equipment and supplies; a personnel manager for a large and varied staff; involved in public rela- tions in the community and with students; concerned for the health of athletes; coordinator of events for both small and large audiences; and manager of facilities involving both build- ings and outside playing areas. Is the athletics administrator primarily a businessman, an educator, a coach? How does he relate to the rest of the institution? How does he see his job? And, most importantly for this book, exactly what does he need to know and how does he go about learning it? The athletic administrator does all the specific tasks men- tioned aboveand more. These duties are described and dis- cussed in detail in the chapters that follow. But the adminis- trator must also have an understanding of the significance of his role, and of the place of athletics in his institution, his com- munity, and his nation. Some of the concepts involved are sug- gested in this opening chapter. CULTURAL AND SOCIOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF ATHLETICS Athletics or sports, as included in the larger concept of play, have been the object of study by many sociologists over the years. Quotations from a variety of sources will show how the interrelationships of play and culture have been explained and analyzed in different ways. Johan Huizinga states the following conclusion regarding play's effect on culture: Real civilization cannot exist in the absence of a certain play element, for civilization presupposes limitation and mastery of the self, the ability not to confuse its own tendencies with the ultimate and highest 2 / ADMINISTRATION Of' ATHLETICS goal, but to understand that it is enclosed with certain bounds freely accepted. Civilization will, in a sense, always he played according to certain rules, and true civilization will always demand fair play. Fair play is nothing less than good faith expressed in play terms. I Frederick W. Cozens and Florence Stumpf have expressed their recognition of cultural factors in play: Some of the most powerfully influential factors affectng the sports, play activities, and overall recreational life of a people are to be found in the realm of the social institutions within a given culture. together with the combined force of the traditions, ideals, and religious con- cepts exemplified in the culturo....The form and type of play and spurts life which evolve in any group or nation mirror the development in other segments of the culture.' Harry A. Scott, in an extensive volume on sports, has pre- sented his views of the play-culture relationship: It is quite possible that the impulse to play, which is at the root of all competitiwe sports, even preceded civilization to the extent that itis repitesented in the original nature of man. Down through the ages the sports activities of the people were influenced by the cultural develop- ment of the era. In turn, games and sports helped to influence the character of each successive culture. Within the framework of this play-culture relationship, peak and depression periods of sports morality have created a system of dual standards and practices. In some societies, sports have contributed to the highest ideals and most coveted concepts, while in others they have supported and encouraged some of civilization's most undesirable behavior. :t John R. Tunis has expressed his regard for the positive values of sports in these words: Nowhere are the ways and words of democracy better illustrated than in sports. Day after clay we see democracy in action on playing fields, diamonds, courts and rinks. Through membership and leadership in athletic contests, boys and girls learn what democracy means. Their guiding words are"Play the game!" "Fair play!" 4 Cozens and Stumpf acknowledge the concept, almost uni- versally accepted, that sports form one of the genuine bonds of all people: Within a few decades, sports and games have spread over the whale world, leaping barriers of race, religion, and social class. The lan- guage of sport is truly universal, and in the sportsman's code there is neither east nor west, neither white nor black, neither exploiter nor exploited. 5 Gregory Stone,in reviewing American sports practices, re:.,:hed the following conclusion: The game, inherently moral and ennobling of its players, seems to be giving way to the spectacle, inherently immoral and debasing.     CHAPTER FIVE STUDENT LIFE AND CAMPUS CULTURE AT DEPAUL A Hundred Year History John 1. Rury hroughout DePaul's history, its students have contributed to the institution's distinctive character. Since 1898, as the university has changed and the campus has grown, a vibrant student culture has evolved. This was hardly unique to DePaul. In many respects, the university's students have reflected national trends in their activities and interests. But as an urban institution, DePaul's location and programs have affected the character of its students and their activities. Historically, Chicago has been a city of immigrants, and over the years DePaul has served the city's principal immigrant groups. It has ministered to Chicago's Roman Catholic popula­ tion, to be sure, but it has also provided educational opportunities for others. As constituents of an urban university, DePaul's students have reflected the diversity and vitality one would expect of a major Chicago institution of higher learning. This is an important part of the university's heritage. In coming together at DePaul, these students created a distinctive social world of their own that changed over time, often mirroring broader tendencies in student life. Still, certain features of the DePaul student experience were quite durable and helped to define an institu­ tional identity. While in many respects its students were similar to their counterparts at other institutions, there were aspects of life at DePaul that were unique. In part this was simply structural. Campus life at DePaul has long been divided between its downtown and uptown (or Lincoln Park) locations, with each site acquiring its own atmosphere.

    Studia Anglica Posnaniensia 56s1 (2021) doi: 10.2478/stap-2021-0001 THE FATE OF MID-20TH-CENTURY SPORTS LOANWORDS FROM ENGLISH IN POLISH RADOSŁAW DYLEWSKI1, MAGDALENA BATOR2 ABSTRACT In recent years, we have observed a huge influx of vocabulary borrowed from English into Polish; these are words either of English origin or borrowed through English. At the same time, the number and variety of scholarly investigations trying to illustrate the extent of anglicisms in Polish and systematise the semantic fields which draw from English the most have increased. Most of them deal with the latest borrowings, often representing professional jargon or spoken language. In this paper we will discuss anglicisms which entered Polish over sixty years ago and remained in the sports lexicon until today. The article is a tribute to the late professor Jacek Fisiak, who offered the first in-depth analysis of sports vocabulary borrowed from English into Polish. His Ph.D. monograph (1961) and the subsequent article (1964) have shown a special place of sports terminology among anglicisms in Polish. The lexical items which Fisiak collected in the early sixties of the twentieth century have been tested not only in terms of their fate, but also the degree of grammatical and orthographic assimilation, as well as semantic changes the lexemes have undergone. The study is based on two large corpora of Polish: the Narodowy Korpus Języka Polskiego and Odkrywka, comprising texts from the 18th century until the present time. W Bonfires were burning last Friday night. The Caltech foot- . ball team had won that after­ noon! The Beavers broke a ten-game losing streak by beating the Claremont-Mudd J.V.'s 28-0. This was Tech's largest shutout margin since 1956. Things were fairly quiet in the first quarter as Tech couldn't get up a running attack. Tech did prevent its opponents from scor­ ing, however, with a goal line stand on the five. In the second quarter things got off to a fast start as Norm Nelson threw a six-yard touch­ down pass to Greg Hoit. A while later Nelson threw a 20-yard touchdown pass, again to Hoit. In the third· quarter, Nelson threw his third touchdown pass, 32 yards to John Steubs. The scoring was completed in the fourth quarter when Steubs picked off a Claremont pass and ran 90 yards for a touchdown. Steve Pohorsky rounded things out by connecting on all four PAT kicks. Tech's rushing defense was great as Claremont lost 98 yards gross and 41 yards net. Mean­ while the passing defense was mediocre, except for three inter­ ceptions. These first Games for women were organized by the International Sports Clubs of Monaco and Monte Carlo, with the aim to attract and entertain sporting enthusiasts. At this international competition, women had their first opportunity to participate in athletics competitions. The Games were held in 1921, 1922 and 1923 in Monte Carlo. At that time, these Games had a prefix ‐ Olympic. The success of the first Games made the organization of the following competitions for women in a variety of events much easier. The President of the International Federation of Sports for Women was Alice Milliat, and she organized the Women's Olympic Games in Paris in 1922, the International Women's Games in 1926 in Gothenburg, in 1930 in Prague and in 1934 in London. The aim of the study is to determine the importance of Women's World Games for the overall development of women's sports and their inclusion into the competition program at the Olympics. The historical method was applied in the paper.
