Tourist Satisfaction with Hill Station Destinations - a Case Study of Shimla Town

ABSTRACT Himachal Pradesh has been one of the hilly states of India. The state has numerous diversities in its geographical appearance. It ranges from plains of Una,Solan, Sirmaour districts, passing through mid altitude districts like Mandi, Kullu, Kangra and Shimla up to high altitude mountanious districts like Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, Chamba and upper reaches of Shimla district. The capital city of the state i.e. Shimla was inhabited by Britishers in earlier times and was their summer capital . Thus, there have been numerous buildings, temples and attractions having heritage value. It is important to understand why Tourists are attracted to hill stations. The reasons are linked to Tourism as an activity and how it can be sustained in the long run. The present study has utilized primary data collected through survey method. The survey used twenty statements on five point likert scale filled by tourists on questionnaires. The Non-parametric test i.e. Chi-square was used as a statistical technique for analysis. The results indicate that the chi-square value is significant it shows that overall tourists are satisfied with their visit to Shimla. Further the study reveals, that natural scenery are cherished while local traffic and parking of vehicles are major problem in Shimla. Last but not least this paper explains the findings and suggestions of the study. -

CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 11 Lepcha is a Tibeto-Burman language spoken in Sikkim, Darjeeling district in West Bengal in India, in Ilm district in Nepal, and in a few villages of Samtsi district in south-western Bhutan. The tribal home- land of the Lepcha people is referred to as ne mayLe VÎa ne máyel lyáng ‘hidden paradise’ or ne mayLe malUX VÎa ne máyel málúk lyáng ‘land of eternal purity’. Most of the areas in which Lepcha is spoken today were once Sikkimese territory. The kingdom of Sikkim used to com- prise all of present-day Sikkim and most of Darjeeling district. Kalim- pong, now in Darjeeling district, used to be part of Bhutan, but was lost to the British and became ‘British Bhutan’ before being incorpo- rated into Darjeeling district. The Lepcha are believed to be the abo- riginal inhabitants of Sikkim. Today the Lepcha people constitute a minority of the population of modern Sikkim, which has been flooded by immigrants from Nepal. Although the Lepcha themselves estimate their number of speakers to be over 50,000, the total number is likely to be much smaller. Accord- ing to the 1991 Census of India, the most recent statistical profile for which the data have been disaggregated, the total number of mother tongue Lepcha speakers across the nation is 29,854. While their dis- tribution is largely in Sikkim and the northern districts of West Ben- gal, there are no reliable speaker numbers for these areas. In the Dar- jeeling district there are many Lepcha villages particularly in the area surrounding the small town of Kalimpong. -

Ans: The Northern plains lie to north of the Tropic of Cancer in the Temperate Zone. The winters are much colder. South India lies below the Tropic of Cancer, in the tropics and gets the direct rays of the sun. Hence it is hot through most of the year. The winters are not so cold. The attention to the development of tourist facilities was given from the 3 Plan Period onwards, Early in 1950 the executive part of tourism organization came into being with the appointment of a Tourist Development Officer. He was assisted by some of the existing staff of Home (Transport) Department. In 1960-61 the Assistant Secretary of the Home (Transport) Department was made Director of Tourism ex-officio and a few posts of assistants were created. Subsequently, the Secretary of Home (Transport) Department became the ex-officio Director of Tourism. Two Regional Tourist Offices - one for the five North Bengal districts i.e., Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, West Dinajpur and Maida with headquarters at Darjeeling and the other for the remaining districts of the State with headquarters at Kolkata were also set up. The Regional Office at KolKata started functioning on 2nd September, 1961. The Regional Office in Darjeeling was started on 1st May, 1962 by taking over the existing Tourist Bureau of the Govt. of India at Darjeeling. The tourism wing of the Home (Transport) Department was transferred to the Development Department on 1st September, 1962. Development. Commissioner then became the ex-officio Director of Tourism. Subsequently, in view of the increasing activities of tourism organization it was transformed into a full-fledged Tourism Department, though the Secretary of the Forest Department functioned as the Secretary, Tourism Department. -

My rearing in Darjeeling hills (from Kindergarten to College days) helped me to understand the issues with a difference. Much of the paradox found everywhere in India is a product of her inextricable antiquity and youth. Stability and dynamism, wisdom and folly, abstention and greed, patience and passion compete without end within the universe that is India. Everything is there, usually in magnified form. No ex- treme of lavish wealth or wretched poverty, no joy or misery, no beauty or horror is too wonderful, or too dreadful, for India. Nor is the passage to India ever an easy one for Western minds. Superficial similarities of language and outward appearances only compound confusion. For nothing is obviously true of India as a whole. Every generalization that follows could be disproved with evidence to the contrary from India itself. Nor is anything “Indian” ever quite as simple as it seems. Rethinking Gorkha Identity: Outside the Imperium of Discourse, Hegemony, and History

RETHINKING GORKHA IDENTITY: OUTSIDE THE IMPERIUM OF DISCOURSE, HEGEMONY, AND HISTORY BIDHAN GOLAY ABSTRACT The primary focus of the paper is the study of the colonial construction of the Gorkha identity and its later day crisis. Taking the colonial encounter as the historic moment of its evolution, the paper makes an attempt to map the formation of the Gorkha identity over the last two hundred years or so by locating the process of formation within the colonial public sphere that emerged in Darjeeling in the early part of the twentieth century. The paper tries to cast new light on the nature of contestation and conflation between the colonial identity or the martial identity inscribed on the body of the Gorkha by the colonial discourse of “martial race” and the cultural identity that was emerging in course of time. It also tries to establish the fact that the colonial forms of representation of the “Gurkhas” as the “martial race” is still the dominant form of representation foreclosing all other forms of representation that had become possible as a new self-identity emerged with the cultural renaissance in Darjeeling and elsewhere. It also looks into the problem of double consciousness of the deterritorialised Gorkha subjectivity that is torn between two seemingly conflictual impulses of a primordially constructed notion of the Gorkha jati (community) and the demands of a modern nation-state. The paper also argues that the Gorkha identity has somewhat failed in securing a political space for its cultural identity leading to deep fissures in its multi layered identity. -

S. Abstract Scholars have noted deplorable conditions of female migrant workers who suffer several types of citizenship disabilities as most countries do not extend equal citizenship rights and protections to migrant workers. In addition to this, they are unable to take full advantage of the rights available to them in the host countries because of low cultural and social capital. Further, studies have emphasized how the breakdown of the traditional economy and the penetration of the market in developing societies have forced people, especially from rural areas, to seek low-paying dead-end jobs in the global labor market. Examining Nepali domestic workers in New Delhi, while this research agrees with the existing studies, we also bring to notice the fact that migrant female workers are not always passive victims and that they exercise considerable choice and agency. The case of Nepali domestic workers in New Delhi offers fresh insight into the ways in which migrant women attempt to actively influence and control the work conditions and immediate labour market outcomes. This paper also shows that even if Nepali migrant workers gain in a limited way, they actively collude with their employers to marginalize native domestic workers. In the end, traditional power relations and inequality are reproduced unchallenged. Thousands of Bhutanese refugees were forcibly displaced to Nepal and established refugee camps where they lived for decades. While in the camps, refugees encountered traumatic life events, including torture, imprisonment, and sexual violence. Starting in 2008 and continuing for years. Bhutanese/Nepali refugees were resettled in the Akron area and encounter a new set of acculturation stressors related to finding employment, learning English, and reestablishing a new set of social networks. Older adults may cling to the Nepali caste system to cope with the unique stressors during the integration process. For over 100 years, people of Nepali descent subscribed to Muluki Ain, which codified discrimination against lower castes and mandated every individual be assigned a caste. Further, members of the ethnic and religious minority were often placed in the lower castes.
