JT Business Report Vol.33

For the full year of the fiscal year ended March 2011, net sales excluding tobacco excise taxes increased slightly due to profit growth as the effect from strategic pricing offset the sharp sales volume declines that followed tax hike and price increase in the Japanese Domestic Tobacco Business and favorable pricing and foreign exchange movements. In the Japanese Domestic Tobacco Business, sales volume decreased drastically due to the effect from the tax hike and price increase. As the Great East Japan Earthquake affected JT factories and suppliers, JT took temporary measures in order to ensure stable product supply – these measures included temporary suspension of shipments, limiting the number of products supplied and focusing on supply of key products. The number of products supplied will be gradually expanded, with 73 products in early August. -

Volume 50 - 1 - TOP MESSAGE Robust business performance and steady profit growth Results for the first six months of the fiscal year ending December 31, 2015 and forecast In the first six months of the fiscal year ending December 31, 2015, we achieved substantial growth of 14.1% in terms of adjusted operating profit at constant rates of exchange, a key performance indicator across the JT Group. This is due to robust pricing in the international tobacco business combined with results exceeding prior-year levels in all of our business areas. In the international tobacco business, adjusted operating profit at constant rates of exchange increased by 14.6% due in part to firm shipment volume of Winston, Camel and other Global Flagship Brands (GFBs) to markets such as France, Spain and Italy, and also due to positive results from steady unit price increases. -

As a result, JT achieved record profit, while adjusted EBITDA at constant rates of exchange, which JT has promised to grow at a mid to high single digit rate in the medium to long term as a key performance indicator across the JT Group, grew by 7.5% year on year. The international tobacco business faced a challenging business environment characterized by industry contraction in the key markets of Russia and Europe. Despite this, adjusted EBITDA at constant rates of exchange (U.S. dollar-based) continued to show double-digit growth at 11.3% as a result of steady market share growth and favorable pricing. -
