It can if one has in mind a certain picture of the relation of analytic philosophy to ‘German idealism’. This particular picture has been called analytic philosophy’s ‘creation myth’, and it was effectively established by Bertrand Russell in his various accounts of 2 the birth of the ‘new philosophy’ around the turn of the twentieth century. It was towards the end of 1898 that Moore and I rebelled against both Kant and Hegel. Moore led the way, but I followed closely in his foot- steps. The context of the verse is that Isaiah is conveying the message to the people of Israel that the ability to return to God (Teshuvah) is available to them, since the “traits” of God are conducive to this. The extent of this dissimilarity is clarified in the second statement, i.e. that it is not merely a distance in relation, but rather it is as if they are of a different category altogether, like the difference that exists between heaven and earth 74 . What then is the relationship between mankind and God? What does the prophet mean when he describes God as having thoughts and ways; how is it even possible to describe God as having thoughts and ways? These perplexing implications are further compounded when one is introduced to the Magnum Opus of Maimonides 75 , the Mishneh Torah . -

Following The Argument Where It Leads Thomas Kelly Princeton University [email protected] Abstract: Throughout the history of western philosophy, the Socratic injunction to ‘follow the argument where it leads’ has exerted a powerful attraction. But what is it, exactly, to follow the argument where it leads? I explore this intellectual ideal and offer a modest proposal as to how we should understand it. On my proposal, following the argument where it leaves involves a kind of modalized reasonableness. I then consider the relationship between the ideal and common sense or 'Moorean' responses to revisionary philosophical theorizing. 1. Introduction Bertrand Russell devoted the thirteenth chapter of his History of Western Philosophy to the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas. He concluded his discussion with a rather unflattering assessment: There is little of the true philosophic spirit in Aquinas. He does not, like the Platonic Socrates, set out to follow wherever the argument may lead. He is not engaged in an inquiry, the result of which it is impossible to know in advance. Before he begins to philosophize, he already knows the truth; it is declared in the Catholic faith. If he can find apparently rational arguments for some parts of the faith, so much the better: If he cannot, he need only fall back on revelation. The finding of arguments for a conclusion given in advance is not philosophy, but special pleading. I cannot, therefore, feel that he deserves to be put on a level with the best philosophers either of Greece or of modern times (1945: 463). The extent to which this is a fair assessment of Aquinas is controversial.1 My purpose in what follows, however, is not to defend Aquinas; nor is it to substantiate the charges that Russell brings against him. -

Why Analyze Denoting Phrases? Russell's Project: The distinction between acquaintance and knowledge about is the distinction between the things we have presentation of, and the things we only reach by means of denoting phrases. [. ] In perception we have acquaintance with the objects of perception, and in thought we have acquaintance with objects of a more abstract logical character; but we do not necessarily have acquaintance with the objects denoted by phrases composed of words with whose meanings we are ac- quainted. -

Note, too, that Hume’s impact extends beyond philosophy. For consider the following passage from Einstein’s letter to Moritz Schlick: Your representations that the theory of rel. [relativity] suggests itself in positivism, yet without requiring it, are also very right. In this also you saw correctly that this line of thought had a great influence on my efforts, and more specifically, E. Mach, and even more so Hume, whose Treatise of Human Nature I had studied avidly and with admiration shortly before discovering the theory of relativity. It is very possible that without these philosophical studies I would not have arrived at the solution (Einstein 1998, 161). 2. For a brief overview of Hume’s connection to naturalized epistemology, see Morris (2008, 472–3). 3. For the sake of convenience, I sometimes refer to the “traditional reading of Hume as a sceptic” as, e.g., “the sceptical reading of Hume” or simply “the sceptical reading”. Undoubtedly, the Society played a key role in Moore’s philosophical development because it offered him a ground to have philosophical discussions and debates with Rus- Review: G.E. Moore: Early Philosophical sell, J.M.E. McTaggart (1866–1925) and others. Moore wanted to become a Prize Fellow and follow the footsteps of his friends Mc- Writings, edited by Thomas Baldwin and Taggart and Russell. In 1898, which was his second shot, Moore Consuelo Preti succeeded and was elected to a Prize Fellowship at Trinity College Cambridge. For those who pursued academic career Prize Fellow- ships offered by Cambridge and Oxford colleges provided the main Alma Korko way to achieve the qualification for an academic career. Moore submitted typescripts as dissertations but he also pre- served manuscripts which Baldwin and Preti used to prepare this G.E. Moore: Early Philosophical Writings publishes for the first edition. The manuscripts have many corrections and the 1898 dis- time two versions of Moore’s fellowship dissertation The Metaphys- sertation is incomplete [Baldwin and Preti, 2011, lxxii]. -

Bertrand Russell, Problems of Philosophy CHAPTER XV THE VALUE OF PHILOSOPHY HAVING now come to the end of our brief and very incomplete review of the problems of philosophy, it will be well to consider, in conclusion, what is the value of philosophy and why it ought to be studied. It is the more necessary to consider this question, in view of the fact that many men, under the influence of science or of practical affairs, are inclined to doubt whether philosophy is anything better than innocent but useless trifling, hair-splitting distinctions, and controversies on matters concerning which knowledge is impossible. This view of philosophy appears to result, partly from a wrong conception of the ends of life, partly from a wrong conception of the kind of goods which philosophy strives to achieve. Physical science, through the medium of inventions, is useful to innumerable people who are wholly ignorant of it; thus the study of physical science is to be recommended, not only, or primarily, because of the effect on the student, but rather because of the effect on mankind in general. Thus utility does not belong to philosophy. If the study of philosophy has any value at all for others than students of philosophy, it must be only indirectly, through its effects upon the lives of those who study it. It is in these effects, therefore, if anywhere, that the value of philosophy must be primarily sought. But further, if we are not to fail in our endeavour to determine the value of philosophy, we must first free our minds from the prejudices of what are wrongly called 'practical' men. -

MARTIN August 2016 Copyright Richard S. Martin 2016 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT This paper addresses two related issues of logic in the philosophy of Gottfried Leibniz. The first problem revolves around Leibniz’s struggle, throughout the period of his mature philosophy, to reconcile his metaphysics and epistemology with his antecedent theological commitments. Leibniz believes that for everything that happens there is a reason, and that the reason God does things is because they are the best that can be done. But if God must, by nature, do what is best, and if what is best is predetermined, then it seems that there may be no room for divine freedom, much less the human freedom Leibniz wished to prove. -

Augustine's Mathematical Realism Paul J. Zwier Calvin College Let me begin by giving a descriptive statement about what I take “Mathematical Realism” to be. Some philosophers of mathematics may identify the view as “mathematical Platonism.” I prefer the terminology “mathematical realism” as to avoid the prejudicial connotations which some might have regarding views held by Greek philosophers. Mathematical Realism is the view that certain mathematical statements are true because they successfully refer to entities which exist independently of the human mind and describe relationships which indeed, do exist between them. We, humans, can discover such true relationships between these entities. Some implications which are often drawn from this view are as follows: 1. In ontology and metaphysics: There are non-material objects. 2. In Philosophy of Mind and in Epistemology: The human mind has some kind of primitive intuition which accounts for the ability of humans to discover relationships between these non-material objects. I am sure that you are all aware of the fact that mathematical realism is not getting a very good “press” these days. It is true that those engaged in the practice of mathematics favor realism; at least psychologically. But many mathematicians retreat to formalism when they are asked to given an account of the nature of the objects under consideration in mathematics. But what is the case against mathematical realism? I shall summarize. The case has been given many times in the philosophical literature. An especially good example is the work of Philip Kitcher. He tries to show what tensions are involved in realism in a paper entitled The Plight of the Platonist which appeared in the journal Nous Volume 12, 1978, pages 119-134.
