The department of Sanskrit General conducted a three day national seminar on the topic ‘Sanskrit dramas and fine arts’ at the university headquarters, Kalady, on 4th of March. Pro-Vice- Chancellor Dr. K S Ravikumar inaugurated the seminar. Dr. P V Ramankuty, Visiting Professor, Department of Sanskrit General, presided over the inaugural ceremony. Dr. Suresh K Nair, Assistant Dr. K S Ravikumar, inaugurating the national seminar Professor, Department of Painting, Banaras Hindu University, delivered the keynote speech on the topic. The university also honoured the Padma Shri recipient in the category of arts, Moozhikkal Pankajakshi Amma during the function. Pankajakshi Amma is Kerala’s last surviving practitioner of Nokkuvidya Pavakkali – a centuries old unique form of puppetry. For the past five centuries, her ancestors have practiced Nokkuvidya Pavakkali in Kerala. Pankajakshi Amma has been carrying on their legacy by performing this indigenous puppet theatre form across and the world since the age of 8. The art of Nokkuvidya Pavakkali demands persistent preparation and practice. This puppetry form requires the artist to balance puppets on the upper lip and manage the movements with continuous observation and by controlling the strings. Pankajakshi Amma is now training her granddaughter Ranjini to perform this puppetry so that the traditional art wouldn’t pass into oblivion. The three day seminar saw more than hundred paper presentations from scholars across the coiuntry. Furthermore, the programme also included an art exhibition and book release by Dr. Suresh K Nair. According to the Kerala State Disaster Management (KLDM), about 14.5% of the area in Kerala are prone to floods, and the proportion is as high as 50% for certain districts such as Ernakulam, Kottayam, and Alappuzha. After 1924, the state of Kerala was affected by the same magnitude of unprecedented floods in August 2018, 453 human lives were lost and 28,000 houses were either completely destroyed or damaged, 14,000 hectares of standing crops and about 70,000 km of road were damaged. Rebuilding the infrastructure and the way of life was major challenge for the government and the civil society. The campaign was conducted as observance to the World Childhood Cancer Day on 15th February. The programme was conducted in collaboration with Irinjalakkuda Co-operative Hospital. With an oblective to reduce the stress and confusion during examinations among the students, the Department of Socail Work conducted a study skill workshop for high school students in Irinjalakkuda. The varsity has always been praised for its vibrant eco-friendy campus, the university’s lotus pond, Poorna bird sanctuary, shantistal (eco-spot) have never failed to amaze anyone who visit the campus. The university authorities, from time to time, have made sure the campus adorns the green by planting fruit trees and seasonal flowering trees. Earlier this year, the varsity prohibited vehicles in the campuses and made available bicycles for the students to commute inside the campus. The newest of all the initiatives to Language block make the campus beautiful is the varsity decision to have graffiti art works across its wall. “The objective is to create a positive vibe in the campus by making the surroundings colourful and festive”, says the Vice- Chancellor, Dr. Dharmaraj Adat. The alumni of Department of Painting, a group of eight who goes by the name ‘Trespassers’, were given the responsibility to make the walls of the campus effervescent with colours. Department of Painting is a gem of gifted talents and no one will know more about the vibes of the campus than our own student community” added the Vice-Chancellor. The group of eight; Vishnupriyan, Amith T, Ambady Kannan, Sreerag P, Bashar U K, Pranav Prabhakaran, Arjun Gopi and Jinil Manikandan started the graffiti work in February 2020 but the lockdowns slowed the work, they begin again in December and are expected to wrapped it up by February 2021. The art works, a total of more than 4500 sqft of vertical wall space spread across different buildings in the Kalady campus feature many themes, instances from daily life, nature, and art forms like theyyam, chavittu natakam, pulikali, duff muttu and oppana.
