  • Introduction
Cambridge University Press 978-1-107-01659-0 — The Archaeology of the Caucasus Antonio Sagona Excerpt More Information 1 INTRODUCTION The modern Caucasus often conjures up images of a highly turbulent region, harbouring a kaleidoscope of peoples who speak dif erent languages and pro- fess dif erent religions. In spite of this restive reputation, it is not hard to appre- ciate why the Caucasus has so vividly captured the imagination of travellers and writers. Often perceived as a boundary between worlds, its landscape is immediately arresting. On a clear day in the southern Caucasus, standing on a vantage point along the middle Kura Basin, the immense horizon becomes an irresistible attraction. There, dim in the remote distance, towering high above the foothills is the mighty range of the Greater Caucasus Mountains . Their lower slopes are usually veiled in cloudy vapours, while their snow-clad peaks glitter in the sunlight, suspended between earth and sky. Over the ridge is another world, one of mighty river valleys and foothills that merge impercep- tibly with the vast European steppe lands beyond. No less alluring is the landscape in southernmost Caucasia, in Armenia, for instance, where the cones of volcanoes, extinct since at least the Quaternary period, sharply punctuate the lava plateau that extends into modern Turkey. Two peaks loom large – Mount Aragats (4,090 m) and Mount Ararat, the latter rising as twin pinnacles (5,137 m and 3,914 m) north of Do ğ ubayazit. The solemn mass of Ararat left the thirteenth century Venetian Marco Polo awe- struck. An exceedingly large and high mountain.

  • Regards Croisés De Voyageurs Occidentaux Sur Le Site De Gaṙni Anahide Kéfélian University of Oxford, UK
Il viaggio in Armenia Dall’antichità ai nostri giorni a cura di Aldo Ferrari, Sona Haroutyunian, Paolo Lucca Regards croisés de voyageurs occidentaux sur le site de Gaṙni Anahide Kéfélian University of Oxford, UK Abstract Nestled in lush greenery and an area of outstanding geological interest, the archaeological site of Gaṙni has aroused enthusiasm from travellers over the centuries. By analysing travel literature, this paper shines new light on how travellers’ writings can improve our knowledge of Gaṙni. This study is divided into three parts. The first part focuses on archaeological data and the preservation of Gaṙni throughout the centuries. The second part examines the sources used by the travellers to draw up their narrative. The last part deals with their methodology and their approach while contextualising the rise of Archaeology as a scientific field. Keywords Gaṙni. Armenia. Travel literature. Western travellers. Rise of archaeology, 17th to 19th centuries. Sommaire 1 Introduction.

Medical Approaches to Cultural Differences: The Case of the Maghreb and France A thesis submitted to the Miami University Honors Program in partial fulfillment of the requirements for University Honors with Distinction by Janine Saliba May 2010 Oxford, OH 1 Abstract Medical Approaches to Cultural Differences: the Case of the Maghreb and France By Janine Saliba People experience cultural differences on many levels – a student leaving the United States for the first time, a government negotiating with another government that follows completely different standards and principles. Culture is an integral part of every day life and differences among cultures have been important contributing factors to how people perceive and react to others. In previous scholarship on this topic, culture has been explored through art, literature, foreign policy, etc. This paper takes a new approach to culture by examining cultural differences, as seen by doctors, between France and Algeria and Tunisia between the mid-nineteenth century and early twentieth. Three doctors were chosen for this purpose: Émile-Louis Bertherand, Lucien Bertholon, and Dorothée Chellier. The paper begins with a brief introduction to the definition of culture and the state of medicine during the period. It then examines other approaches to cultural difference, and then discusses the contributions of the doctors. Each of the doctors listed above contributes a different perspective on the Maghrebian region, and at the end of the exploration, we find that the doctors are an integral part of perpetuating French culture as well as bringing French culture to the indigenous populations. 2 Medical Approaches to Cultural Differences: the Case of the Maghreb and France By Janine Saliba Approved by: __________________________________, Advisor Dr.

  • “The Heritage of Ancestors” Early Studies on Armenian Manuscripts and Miniature Painting
Venezia Arti e-ISSN 2385-2720 Vol. 27 – Dicembre 2018 ISSN 0394-4298 “The Heritage of Ancestors” Early Studies on Armenian Manuscripts and Miniature Painting Gohar Grigoryan Savary (University of Fribourg, Switzerland) Abstract This essay deals with the emergence of scholarship on medieval Armenian artifacts with a particular emphasis on the study of manuscripts and miniature painting, and covers the period from the mid-nineteenth century until the beginning of the twentieth century. While the title of this article may appear to stress the heritage of the Armenians as belonging to a ‘national culture’, it also alludes to some early approaches, according to which the origins of non-Armenian arts were also sought in medieval Armenia. Amidst the growing waves of contemporary imperialist and nationalist sentiments in the nineteenth-early twentieth centuries, the interest in Armenian miniature painting commenced almost simultaneously in four different intellectual milieus – Russian, German-speaking, French, and Armenian – each approaching the subject from its own perspective and motivated by issues specific to the given cultural-po- litical realm. Additionally, the citations listed here provide a bibliography of Armenian manuscript catalogues published prior to 1900. Summary 1 Introduction. – 2 Imperial Russia and Illustrations of Medieval Armenian Manuscripts. – 3 Armenian Miniature Painting in the German-speaking Scholarship. – 4 The ‘(in)authentic’ Art of the Armenians in the French Scholarship. – 5 The Armenian Approach to the Native Heritage.
