  • 2010 CLAXTON 2010 in REVIEW! - by Peter Flintoff Section 1
Flintoff & Dunn’s AUSTRALIAN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL - 2010 CLAXTON 2010 IN REVIEW! - By Peter Flintoff Section 1 VICTORIA EMERGES TO WIN 22ND CLAXTON SHIELD - LAST OF THIS FORMAT? Under assurance that Australia’s new National Baseball League would definitely commence at the end of 2010, this 2009/10 Claxton Shield was proclaimed to be the last of its kind. Similar to the previous competition, this program was designed to be as close as possible to what the National League might bring as a kind of “forerunner” to the new competition. As another progressive upgrade from the previous year, each of the five major state teams were scheduled to play two three-game weekend series against each other state on a “home & away” basis. The schedule comprised more games than the previous season with the abandonment of the “Showcase Round” from the 2008/09 competition. Standard programming was for a Friday night game plus a Saturday afternoon/night double- header, however, separate games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights were scheduled for Perth as a variation to this. Rained-out and/or postponed games were re-scheduled to be added to weekend programs for the return series between the same teams. At the conclusion of the 24 preliminary games played by each team the top placed team on the table was automatically qualified to host the best-of-three Grand Final series. The second placed team would host the third placed team in a best-of-three semi-final series for the right to play in the Grand Final. This Claxton Shield review is not intended to

  • “Clarko” Clarkson, Winter Rustlers A1 Club Coach, Former ABL Star and Australian Baseball Hall of Fame Inductee
INTERVIEWS Interview with Dave “Clarko” Clarkson, Winter Rustlers A1 Club Coach, former ABL star and Australian Baseball Hall of Fame inductee. Another fantastic read in our Rustlers Interviews series; this time with a real Australian baseball star in Clarko. Most of us know him as the Cheltenham BC Senior Winter coach, but read this interview and you’ll see there’s a fair bit more … Chelt website: How long you've been involved in baseball. How did you get into it? Tell us a bit about your baseball background. Clarko: I have been involved in baseball now for 42 years. I started playing in a school team competition run by Waverley baseball club and was selected from this competition to play for WBC in the VBA competition. In those days I was a shortstop, but in my very first Waverley game a ground ball bounced up and got me in the nose so I decided to take up catching at that point. I have represented Victoria in Under 15 in 1976 and 1977, Under 18 in 1979 and 1980. Was selected in Victorian Claxton Shield team in 1981, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989. Was appointed Captain of Claxton Shield team from 1984 to 1989. Represented Australia in Under 18's 1979 and 1980 and the Australian Senior team from 1984 thru to 1995. Represented Australia at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games. Selected to the Australian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010. Played ABL from 1990 thru to 1998 and then on the coaching panel with the Waverley / Melbourne Reds.
