Generation “Undecided”: Millennial Discourses and Media Reactions to Changing Political Behaviors A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Drexel University by Alison N. Novak in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy May 2014 ii -Copyright Page- iii -Dedication- To my parents, who fought to get me into the high-honors civics course in 9th grade. v Acknowledgements To begin, my parents, Michael and Denise Novak have been an incredible support system. The way they live their life has taught me the meaning of being a true member of a community and citizen. The study presented here is based on the principles of responsibility, compassion, and engagement that they have taught me. Thank you for teaching me how to grow up and be an adult. A great deal of this study is inspired by the teachers in my life. I’ve been given many gifts along the way, but I truly believe that learning from inspiring leaders and teachers is foundational in the way I try to live my life. These people include Jeanne Boulanger, Evelyn Novak, Aunt Melinda Novak, Uncle Jerry Meyers, Uncle Leon Boulanger, Dorothy and Edward Markowski, Carol MacMullen, Colleen James, Mrs. Zwiben, and my professors from Marist College. I am grateful to the members of the Drexel University community. From the moment I started in the doctoral program, the University has been a tremendous source of intellectual, emotional, and social support. Over the past four years, The Department of Culture and Communication has made me and fellow students feel as if we can accomplish anything, and so we do. -

Let Us Infotain You: Politics in the New Media Age Abstract Political communications scholars, members of the press, and political elites have traditionally distinguished between entertainment and non-entertainment media. It is in public affairs media in general and news media in particular that politics is assumed to reside, and it is to this part of the media that the public is assumed to turn when engaging the political world. Politics, in this view, is a distinct and self- contained part of public life, and citizen is one role among many played by individuals. -

Xm and Air America Radio Announce Long Term Agreement; Xm to Be Official Satellite Radio Network of Air America
NEWS RELEASE XM AND AIR AMERICA RADIO ANNOUNCE LONG TERM AGREEMENT; XM TO BE OFFICIAL SATELLITE RADIO NETWORK OF AIR AMERICA 4/11/2005 Washington D.C., April 11, 2005 -- XM Satellite Radio (NASDAQ: XMSR), the nation's leading satellite radio provider with more than 3.77 million subscribers, has announced a new long-term agreement with Air America Radio, the national progressive entertainment talk radio network home to Al Franken, Randi Rhodes and Janeane Garofalo. As part of this agreement XM will be the official satellite radio network for Air America Radio. Beginning in May, XM's liberal talk channel, America Left (XM Channel 167) will be renamed Air America Radio. The channel will include an expanded line-up of Air America Radio programming, including the recently debuted "Springer on the Radio" hosted by Jerry Springer and upcoming "Rachel Maddow Show," among others. XM's Air America Radio channel also will feature popular shows currently carried on America Left, including "The Ed Shultz Show" and "The Alan Colmes Show." "XM was a natural fit to be the official satellite radio network of Air America Radio, given its large subscriber base, numerous distribution channels and demonstrated growth," said Danny Goldberg, CEO of Air America Radio. "The quality of XM's other partnerships, their Washington, D.C. location and proximity to the center of our nation's political workings, along with millions of subscribers, made our decision easy." XM's Washington, D.C. headquarters will offer dedicated studio space for special live broadcasts throughout the year for Air America Radio programs featuring Rachel Maddow, Marc Marron, Mark Riley, Al Franken, Katherine Lanpher, Jerry Springer, Randi Rhodes, Sam Seder, Janeane Garofalo, Chuck D, Mike Malloy, Laura Flanders, Steve Earle, Robert Kennedy Jr., Mike Papantonio, Kyle Jason, Marty Kaplan, and Betsy Rosenberg. -

SEBELIUS Steven Lubet∗ Clare Diegel∗∗ I. INTRODUCTION The Supreme Court litigation over the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (“PPACA”) came to a conclusion in the first half of 2012, characterized by a series of surprises. The first surprise occurred when the Court scheduled the case for six hours of oral argument, spread over three days. Such an expanded argument was unprecedented in modern times, leading to much speculation that the issues would be more troublesome for the Court than many observers had previously assumed. Still, even veteran court watchers were further shocked by the combative tone of the oral argument itself, when Justices Scalia, Alito, Kennedy, and Roberts seemed to gang up on Solicitor General Donald Verrilli, who defended the PPACA on behalf of the government. -

ABSTRACT This study examines Hillary Clinton’s public discourse at various points in her career, analyzing which rhetorical strategies she uses to build and maintain trust between herself and the American public. To do so, this study examines five moments in Clinton’s career in which she actively employs rhetoric that affects the public’s perception of Clinton as a trustworthy or untrustworthy figure. The five case studies analyzed in this study are Bill and Hillary Clinton’s 1992 interview on 60 Minutes, following accusations of Bill’s extramarital affair with Gennifer Flowers; Hillary Clinton’s tears in New Hampshire on the 2008 presidential campaign trail; Hillary’s “3am Phone Call” ad, released during the 2008 primary campaign; Hillary’s social media efforts to brand herself as a grandmother during the 2016 presidential campaign; and Hillary’s infamous email scandal that unfolded during the 2016 presidential campaign. -
Terrorizing Gender: Transgender Visibility and the Surveillance Practices of the U.S
Terrorizing Gender: Transgender Visibility and the Surveillance Practices of the U.S. Security State A Dissertation SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA BY Mia Louisa Fischer IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Dr. Mary Douglas Vavrus, Co-Adviser Dr. Jigna Desai, Co-Adviser June 2016 © Mia Louisa Fischer 2016 Acknowledgements First, I would like to thank my family back home in Germany for their unconditional support of my academic endeavors. Thanks and love especially to my Mom who always encouraged me to be creative and queer – far before I knew what that really meant. If I have any talent for teaching it undoubtedly comes from seeing her as a passionate elementary school teacher growing up. I am very thankful that my 92-year-old grandma still gets to see her youngest grandchild graduate and finally get a “real job.” I know it’s taking a big worry off of her. There are already several medical doctors in the family, now you can add a Doctor of Philosophy to the list. I promise I will come home to visit again soon. Thanks also to my sister, Kim who has been there through the ups and downs, and made sure I stayed on track when things were falling apart. To my dad, thank you for encouraging me to follow my dreams even if I chased them some 3,000 miles across the ocean. To my Minneapolis ersatz family, the Kasellas – thank you for giving me a home away from home over the past five years. -

In the first place, it represented the first time that the President had been interviewed on British television and for that reason alone the meeting was greatly anticipated. That said, given the closeness of the relationship between Trump and Morgan, it’s true to say that no-one was seriously expecting the interview be anything other than the festival of flattery that it turned out to be. Trump was, as usual, triumphalist, vague, self-congratulatory and repetitive. He is clearly not a man enamoured with the finer details of policy, diplomacy, strategy or finesse. Morgan’s chummy approach played to his friend’s obvious skills. When the topics did veer into territory which should have been explored in greater depth, such as climate change, Morgan failed to challenge any of Trump’s more sim- plistic and dangerous assertions.
