NOW IN MY 51st YEAR IN THE WORLD OF COLLECTIBLE CURRENCY

What a difference one year makes!! In late 2016 and throughout 2017 I mailed out catalogs saying that fancy serial numbered paper money was due to for a big increase in demand. While I recognized that this prediction sounded self-serving, I truly felt that prices were so low, and material was so scarce that 2017 would prove to be a banner year. In the area of special serial numbers; our sales for 2015 were $351,230, they rose to $505,283 in 2016 and they doubled in 2017. For the 1st quarter of 2018 sales were in excess of $2,300,000.

Last fall I mailed out a catalog that contained approximately $200,000 of fancy serial numbered Canadian Banknotes. 100% of the notes sold out in 60 days. I could have sold double that amount, but I can find no more are available for purchase.

During 2017 I were blessed with attracting six new collectors who have a fondness for Large Size U.S. Currency with special serial numbers. I literally can’t keep these notes in stock for more than a few hours. The “velocity of sales” of these rarities is just breath-taking. I am a lucky man and very grateful for your business. Here’s a bit of background on me, if you haven’t bought from me before now:

Mike Abramson entered the world of currency in 1967 as a teenage collector with a long time interest in coins. The moment he laid his eyes on older paper money, with their different colored seals, he became strongly attracted to these wonderful collectibles. He bought his first two fancy serial numbered notes in the late 1980’s: $1 1935 era Silver Certificates with serial numbers 00000001 and 99999999 for $550 per note. Everyone he showed them to, told him he was completely crazy to spend that kind of money. He sold his personal collection of fancy serial numbered notes in 1988 for a six figure sum, and made the decision to become a dealer specializing in fancy serial numbered paper money. 2018 is his 51st year involved in this industry. In addition to offering his inventory in this catalog, he is a partner with Fred, Doris and Bianca Bart in Executive Currency. To Mike this business isn’t work…..it’s a pleasure and a passion to pursue.

Mike has handled many of the rarest fancy serial numbered notes to ever to be offered to the public including the: $100 1966 Legal Tender A00000001A, the $10 1933 Silver Certificate A00000001A, the $500 1934 FRN J00000001*, four of the six known small size roll-over sets with serial numbers 99999999/100,000,000/00000001, half of the large size serial #100,000,000 notes, 40 of the eight digit large size eight digit solid serial numbers, and two dozen large size serial #1s.

Over the past three decades Abramson has had articles published in The Currency Dealer Newsletter, Coin World and Paper Money magazine, and is widely considered the nation's largest currency dealer concentrating on special serial numbered banknotes. He considers it a real honor to have been the primary dealer for constructing five of six largest collections of these specialized notes since the A. A. Grinnell sales of the 1940s: The 1990 Baltimore Collection of Special Serial Numbers, The 1999 massive VA radar/repeater collection, the landmark 2004 John Whitney Walter Collection, the 2012 James W. "Billy" Key Collection and the 2014 Mel Wilmore Collection. When it came time to sell, all of these collectors came back to him, for his assistance in placing their holdings with the next generation of enthusiasts.

Mike sold the VA radar/repeater collection in 1999 in his 168 page fixed price catalog and wrote the auction catalogs for both the Key and Wilmore sales for Lyn Knight Currency Auctions in 2012 and 2014. He has written auction lot descriptions for Stacks-Bowers as well. Mike is a member of the Professional Curency Dealers Association, Member #9999 of The Society of Paper Money Collectors, American Numismatic Association and a number of other numismatic organizations. 2018 represents his 51st year involved in the paper money industry. Call or text Mike at 1-218-310-0090 or e-mailing him at [email protected].

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT SPECIAL SERIAL NUMBERED BANKNOTES:

Where do you find banknotes with fancy serial numbers For most of the last three decades my suppliers of newly issued paper money with special serial numbers were individuals who worked for either large money center domestic banks or armored car companies. Things started to change in 2008-2009 as larger banks kept acquiring smaller banks, and now most all of my domestic suppliers are “out of business”. Their ability to pull out fancy serial numbers has been terminated by new bank ownership. About 95% of the fancy serial numbered new currency I buy now comes from foreign countries. This catalog contains notes that were put away over the past three decades by several different collectors, who all decided to sell to me in 2017.

How would people in foreign countries be able to supply fancy serial numbered US Paper Money A call to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing confirms that approximately 70% of the total value of paper money printed is shipped outside the U.S. yearly. The demand for greenbacks overseas is very strong, and in many countries, they are preferable to the local currency.

What is the current state of fancy serial numbered notes If you’ve followed this specialty market over the past two decades you’ve noticed a sharp run up in prices of fancy serial numbered notes. But prices have eased off a bit over from 2012 – 2016 for solid serial numbers and for ladder serial numbered notes. The simple reason for that was the two large Lyn Knight Currency Auctions of the James W. “Billy” Key and Mel Wilmore collections during 2012 and 2014. With these two collections and dispersal of some other significant holdings during this same time period, more than $2,000,000 worth of special serial numbered notes entered the marketplace within a 24 month period. But that was then, and today is very, very different.

Who bought the notes from the ey and Wilmore collections I ended up as the high bidder on approximately 40% of the total notes in both collections. I have now sold 100% of everything I purchased from these two collections, at prices higher than what I paid at auction.

What does the future hold for pricing on this type of collectible While I believe I buy and sell more of this material than any dealer in the country, the answer is that I just don’t know for sure. I can offer some insight as to where I believe the market might be headed: 1) I have far fewer suppliers now than at any point in the past. Those suppliers that I do have no longer will provide $1 - $20 two digit radars, two digit repeaters, super radars or super repeaters. Bulk quantities of $1 FRN 3-4 digit radars and repeaters that used to be plentiful dried up five years ago and I am unaware of anyone that can supply these in quantity now. My only infrequent suppliers are based primarily overseas. 2) The major suppliers of $100 fancy s/n notes who were both in Germany went out of business in 2014. 3) There is a supplier in Vietnam who has access to $100 fancy serial numbered notes, but he doesn’t want to sell his fancy serial numbered $100’s at price levels that the market will tolerate. If I can’t buy many new fancy serial numbers that are currently being printed, I have to go back to collectors to try to buy their notes that they put away years ago.

So are fancy serial numbers a good investment If you’re looking for a quick profit by buying the banknotes in this catalog, I’d advise you to look elsewhere. Buying paper money with the hope of re-selling it in a year or two at a profit, is in my opinion, a mistake. For most collectors who bought fancy serial numbered notes decades ago, they may be holding greatly appreciated assets. I remember the first currency show I attended in person, 31 years ago at the 1987 PCDA show in St. Louis. I bought my first fancy serial numbered notes: two $1 1935A Silver Certificates, one serial #00000001 and one #99999999. The dealer charged me $550 for each note and everyone told me I was absolutely crazy to pay that much. I remember 18 years ago being offered the $2 1963 Legal Tender Note #A11111111A $3000, which I bought. This same $2 note sold in the Wilmore auction on 3-7-14 for $14,950. A $10 FRN JB00000001B PCGS 67PPQ sold at $17,625 at the Heritage CSNS auction in April 2014 and a $2 2013 FRN F11111111A sold for $6463 at Lyn Knight’s 3-18-16 CPMX auction. However I would caution anyone who wants assurance that notes they are buying today will be worth multiples of what they are paying, one or two decades from now, that I cannot offer you that comfort.

So why buy these notes I bought them for my personal collection in the 1980’s because I simply fell in love with them. The emotional appeal of a serial numbers like 12345678, 00000001, 99999999 or 100,000,000 is really powerful to me. You own something that is unique.

A star note as most of you know, is a note printed to replace a “mistake” in the printing of a regular, nonstar note. nk smears, cutting errors, misalignments, poor ink quality are amongst the reason that error or mistake notes occur. nly a tiny fraction of the paper money you will see in circulation will have the star suffi. Thousands of nonstars are printed for every star note that is produced. rom 12 to the current 201 series over 000 serial 00000001s nonstar small sie type notes have been printed and perhaps 00 of these serial 00000001 nonstar ederal eserve otes have been publically auctioned over the years. f the serial number 00000001s that have been offered publically for sale, less than two doen have been offered with the STA suffi, other than $2 200 12 district souvenir sets that were not meant for general circulation), making star note serial 1s statistically more than 25 times rarer than nonstar serial 00000001s.

Serial 10000000 STA notes are in a different rarity league. n my 51 years of researching fancy serial numbers, can document only T serial 10000000s in private hands or in museums. There are three maor reasons for this 1) rom 1 to 200 the ureau of ngraving and Printing had the standing policy of removing all notes whose serial number ended with five or more nines and five or more eros. This applied to both nonstar serial numbers and star serial numbers. So for 5 years serial numbers like 0 and 10000000 were all removed. The reason for that was their standard quality control procedure, where a P employee would eamine the last two notes contained in these specific packs to check for overall quality. All of these notes were supposed to be removed with a random serial number star note. 2) With the advent or more modern printing equipment introduced with the “big head” variety of U.S. Paper Money beginning in the late 10s, the number of error notes printed has been dramatically reduced. The accuracy of the new printing presses is significantly higher than the old style presses, necessitating far fewer star notes. ) About of the star note runs printed, ended below serial 10000000. ere is a complete list of serial 10000000 that are known to have been printed eep in mind that hundreds of billions of nonstar notes in aggregate for all denominations were printed from the 12 to the 200 series.)
