Jortner, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2005 This dissertation, prepared towards the completion of a Ph.D. in Theatre and Performance Studies at the University of Pittsburgh, examines “Yankee Theatre” in America and London through a post-colonial lens from 1787 to 1855. Actors under consideration include: Charles Mathews, James Hackett, George Hill, Danforth Marble and Joshua Silsbee. These actors were selected due to their status as iconic performers in “Yankee Theatre.” The Post-Revolutionary period in America was filled with questions of national identity. Much of American culture came directly from England. American citizens read English books, studied English texts in school, and watched English theatre. They were inundated with English culture and unsure of what their own civilization might look like. -

Mitchell] University of Mississippi On 2 September 1836, Edgar Allan Poe submitted to the Philadelphia editor Harrison Hall the plan of a work which never saw the light of day: At different times there has appeared in the Messenger a series of Tales, by myself—in all seventeen. They are of a bizarre and generally whimsical character, and were originally written to illustrate a large work “On the Imaginative Faculties.” I have prepared them for republication, in book form, in the following manner. I imagine a company of seventeen persons who call themselves the Folio Club. -

So far only the Universities at Eau C laire, River Falls, and at Stevens Point have formal courses. The University at M adison has never had an y such course though informal interest has been strongly present. The University at R iver Falls has developed, through the activities and interests of Dr. Walker W yman, a publish ing program which has produced several books of regional fol klore. -

Greater Portland Landmarks undertook this project as a means of helping the public understand and appreciate the value of Portland’s historic architecture. The ulti mate goal is recognition and protection of the city’s architecturally important buildings and neighborhoods, so many of which have been destroyed or defaced in re cent years. -

By Donald A. Sears. (Boston: Twayne Publishers, 1978. Pp. 154. Hardcover. $9.95). This is the second serious biography of John Neal (1793-1876) to be published in recent years. The first was Benjamin Lease’s That Wild Fellow John Neal and the American Literary Revolution (University of Chicago Press, 1972) . In the preface to the new study, Dr. Sears writes: . it is [Lease’s] purpose to focus on Neal’s role as a literary nationalist, and therefore relatively slight treatment is given to Neal’s activities as a reformer, art and theater critic, and patron of budding talent. The present study has the advantage of previous scholarship and may accordingly attempt a fuller and more balanced assessment of Neal’s long and immensely varied career. No nineteenth-century Mainer more deserves a full and balanced biography than does Neal, and it has long seemed that Dr. -

“Sleepy Hollow” Ichabod Crane: Comparing and Contrasting Different Medium Lesson Overview Overview: Students will read an adapted version of Washington Irving’s “Sleepy Hollow”. Before students read the story, they will analyze a cartoon sketch of the character Ichabod Crane. Using an analysis tool, the students will analyze the sketch noting anything unique. The lesson will continue with discussion of the classroom, as well as a quick lesson on classrooms in the 18th century. By the end of the lesson, students will have a better understanding of how fiction is influenced by real events and people, as well as being able to compare similar content in different mediums. Grade Range: 6-8 Objective: After completing this activity, students should be able to: Understand the history behind a short story prior to reading the material. Differentiate between the historical fiction of the short story “Sleepy Hollow” and the historical fact. Compare and contrast different mediums containing similar content (i.e. short story and cartoon sketch). Time Required: Two class periods of 45 minutes. The Yankee Soldier’s Might: The District of Maine and the Reputation of the Massachusetts Militia, 1800–1812 joshua m. smith N the spring of 1806, the residents of Portland, Maine, I were treated to an unusual display of street theater when militiaman Noah Harding reported for his scheduled muster. Harding wore three waistcoats of various colors and trousers hanging obscenely low, both adorned with bows and ribbons; on his face were outrageously large spectacles and on his feet boots covered in mold; a large dried codfish protruded from his knapsack, its tail extending well over his shoulder. It was widely agreed that he looked like a “deserter from a mad house.” Word had preceded Harding’s arrival, and a crowd had gathered. But his officers had also heard about Harding’s plan to embarrass them, and they had prepared a surprise of their own. They arrested him and, at the head of Fish Street, mounted him on an eight-foot-high “horse,” where he was forced to sit for an hour with his hands tied behind his back. Unrepentant, Harding pretended to canter on the “horse,” and he called out mock toasts to his officers. After the event passed, Harding sued his lieutenant. He was apparently unsuccessful, however, I thank Brigadier General Leonid Kondratiuk, Director, Historical Services, the Adjutant General’s Office of Massachusetts; Larry Glatz of Harrison, Maine; Lincoln Paine of Portland, Maine; and Alan Taylor of the University of California, Davis, for their support and assistance. ALBANY - CDCI Burnt Hills Ballston Lakes Central School District changed the transition planning procedures for students with disabilities to allow CDCI to regularly participate in the Parent Transition Sessions in order to facilitate a more efficient referral process to Independent Living Center services and community resources. ALBANY - CDCI Columbia High School in East Greenbush changed its practices to routinely provide to students with disabilities information on Independent Living Centers, vocational rehabilitation services, the Client Assistance Program, and community based services. ALBANY - CDCI Schenectady High School changed its practices to routinely provide to students with disabilities information on Independent Living Centers, vocational rehabilitation services, and community based services. ALBANY - CDCI Disability Resource Center at the State University of New York (SUNY) University at Albany changed its practices to permit CDCI to post flyers on all campus bill boards to ensure equal access to services for students with disabilities. -

1 MAINE HISTORICAL SOCIETY Coll. 2125 John Neal Collection 1786-1972 bulk 1814-1876 Accession number: 2004.133 Processed: Summer 2004 by Brittany Hopkins 4 linear feet, 57 volumes (+ 1 small box, oversized materials) Biographical information: John Neal (1793-1876), along with his twin sister Rachel (1793-1858), was born to John and Rachel (Hall) Neal in Portland, Maine (August 25, 1793). After an education in the public schools, young John became a “Yankee jack-of-all trades.” In 1809 he moved to Boston and later went into business with John Pierpont (1785-1866), poet, reformer, and life long friend. IN 1815 Neal moved to Baltimore and immersed himself in legal and literary study and involved himself with the Peale family of painters. He also became the youngest member of the literary Delphian Club. During those years, he wrote his first novel, Keep Cool, two long poems, The Battle of Niagara and Otho, and four more controversial novels in the course of two years: Logan, Randolph, Errata, and Seventy-Six. After practicing law in the early 1820s, he traveled to London, where he attempted to make a case for the American literary and artistic scenes, publishing numerous articles in Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine. In 1827 Neal returned to settle in Portland, Maine, despite hostility from those who were offended by his published works. In 1828 he published and edited The Yankee, a cultural and literary publication, continued to write, and married his cousin, Eleanor Hall (1809-1877), in 1828. John and Eleanor had five children: Mary (1829-1914), James (1831-1856), Margaret Eleanor (1834-1927), Eleanor (1844-1845), and John Pierpont (1847-1915). -
An Analysis of Ichabod Crane's Self-Destruction in Washington
CHAPTER III Ichabod Crane's Characters and Conflicts in Washington Irving's that Turn Him into Self- Destruction In this chapter, to answer the research problem, the thesis writer analyzes the specific characters of the main Washington Irving's short The thesis writer analyzes them according to Carpenter's postulation. Subsequently, the thesis writer analyzes Ichabod's conflicts, all of which are caused by his characters. In other words, the thesis writer analyzes why Ichabod Crane has specific characters and 16 17 how such characters, which cause lots of conflicts, lead him to his self- destruction. 3. lchabod Crane’s Characters According to Carpenter, there are many are words, actions, appearances, backgrounds, and the opinion of a person’s motivations and personality. Referring to the above explanation, the thesis writer interprets that Ichabod has several specific characters, which appear from his action, appearance, background, opinion of others and words. Then, the thesis writer discusses each of them using the literary theory to analyze each of Ichabod Crane’s characters. 3.1 Ichabod Crane as a Superstitious Person Explicitly, it is stated in the short story that Ichabod Crane is a superstitious person, who believes in charms, omens, supernatural things, etc. It is shown in this quotation, ”He had read several books quite through, and was a perfect master of Cotton Mather’s History of New England Witchcraft, in which, by the way, he most firmly and potently believed” (276). Cotton Mather’s History of New England is a book about the history of New England’s supernatural events. Thus, the quotation means that Ichabod Crane believes in every story about supernatural events since he reads all the books and masters all the stories about Cotton Mather’s History of New England. -

A literary map can be defined as any pictorial map that depicts imaginative worlds or authorial associations across geopolitical space. While notable examples have circulated for centuries in bound books, such as Thomas More’s Utopia and William Faulkner’s Absalom, Absalom!, the majority of twentieth- century literary maps were ephemeral productions that have not survived in great numbers. These discursive documents functioned as compelling expressions of literary taste and cultural values; they circulated in magazines and newspapers, as gas station promotional giveaways and diner placemats, and as classroom “equipment.” Extant literary maps offer new perspectives on turn-of-the-twentieth century U.S. literary nationalism and the Public Library Movement, “fiction debates” and “Great Books”
