While we could use the Tandem for a while, with the baby in a TANDEM TALES haversack on my back between the two of us, this wasn’t ideal. After a while we abandoned the tandem. We were preparing to emigrate ON A BICYCLE BUILT FOR TWO to Australia on the ‘ten pound Pom’ scheme. It was a very busy time. By Matt Dickinson The tandem dropped completely out of my mind. Most lads of eighteen today have a car, but that wasn’t the case in THE TANDEM AFTER WE EMIGRATED TO AUSTRALIA earlier times, not by any means. I bought a push-bike at sixteen, on I found out recently the tandem still had a very interesting life after hire purchase, as a means of transport to work and for sight seeing at we left England. My three brothers and my sister made use of the idle weekends. Then at about eighteen, I’d found a girl friend and decided tandem, especially my sister. She seems to have been an adventurous to get a tandem, for dual transport and courting. This was way before user. When last I recall the tandem, it had a habit of breaking spokes, Drive-in theatres. Seeing this tandem advertised in the local paper, with maybe two broken in the front wheel. I now learn from emails, I decided to go and see it. Now Tandems need two people to ride the tandem was well used and to my knowledge, no spokes were them. For some reason, which I can’t explain, my girlfriend’s sister, replaced. My sister, Jane and a girl friend, rode it to London and back Ada, went with me. Maybe Mary was on the sick list. I don’t know the from Northumberland to see some major celebration. If I had known, reason. Ada and I must have gone by bus, to this colliery village, to I would have been concerned I wouldn’t have thought of tackling that see the Tandem. Buses were the main means of travel at that time. distance without having a wheel respoked. Fortunately they did this We arrived at this village in the Tyne Valley. This pit village, was one trip to London and back safely and enjoyed it thoroughly. long row of houses along one side of the road, two-storied, stone I was also told by my niece, that two young lads, Jim and Angus, used built, slate roofed houses with a yard and earth toilets out the back, the tandem when going to local village dances. It was well used, as typical of hundreds of coal pit villages, which were all over Durham they attended dances regularly. On one occasion, the two of them, and Northumberland and are now, no longer hewing coal. Coal now went to a country village dance on the tandem, the dance was a great comes from Poland to Newcastle. Ada and I found the house with the success, and Angus was enjoying the dance and the company of a Tandem for sale. We knocked and a middle-aged woman answered very attractive young girl. The problem was, this young heart throb the door. ‘Hello, canny lad’. lass, had to be home early, on her Dad’s instruction, and were not to ‘We’ve come about the Tandem,’ I said. be lightly ignored. As it was only a mile or so to her home, Angus told ‘OH Aye, and is this your young Lady?’ Jim he was taking this lass home and would be back SOON, with the ‘No, its her sister, Ada.’ tandem to ride the three miles home with Jim. Unfortunately, taking ‘Come in, come in,’ she said. a pretty young woman home, can be a surprisingly lengthy affair. These pit houses are small. The downstairs room does everything, Time, with young lovers, is quickly forgotten and slips away at an cooking, eating, everything, bedrooms were upstairs. We went into unbelievable rate. A goodnight kiss can be a lengthy event!!! On the a warm room and to my surprise and to Ada’s shock, here, in front other hand with Jim, the dance ended. Jim, waiting in the cold night of a blazing coal fire, was a full length tin bath, with the man of the air, time went very slow indeed. After an age waiting, with no Angus house sitting in it. He was a coal miner who had just finished his shift and no Tandem he started to walk the cold, moonlit country road, back underground, and now naked in this portable tin bath well soaped up to the farm on his ‘Pat Malone’. to get rid of coal dust. I don’t know how the next meeting with the two lads went. But they ‘George, they’ve come about Jack’s tandem,’ she said. are still the best of pals, she must have been a very, bonny lass. There was absolutely no embarrassment to either the man in the tin No one seems to know what finally happened that tandem, probably bath, in front of a great coal fire or his wife. This was just a normal scrap metal, but it had an interesting life and a happy place in more part of a hard life. A daily occurrence getting bathed, clean, after very than one memory. dirty work, deep underground. ‘Aye, well, bring the bike out, let them have a look at it, Lass.’ The ‘Hercules tandem’ was brought out from the passage. It was a good machine. Ada, who had been very quiet, said to the lady, ‘It’s a very nice tandem.’ The old lady said, ‘Aye, it was Jack’s pride and joy, they used to go everywhere on it.’ She took a photo from the mantlepiece above the fire, ‘That’s Jack’, she said, it was a photo of a soldier. Then I traded with the man in the bath and his wife and we settled on a price. I think it was ‘Twenty pounds’, but I may be way out as twenty pound was a considerable amount of money in those days. I paid the lady and we walked the tandem from the house to the road. We mounted and started off for home. I recall being aware of the woman, watching and waving, till we were out of sight. Ada and I enjoyed the ride home, the Tyne valley is attractive, with many small villages to pass through. When Ada told the tale of her experience, including seeing a miner in the tin bath, she had a totally different view of things to mine. I had been solely interested in the tandem condition and the money. It was just after the war, and Ada thought, after talking to the older lady, maybe Jack didn’t get back home, to enjoy his tandem. This thought had never occurred to me. Maybe Ada is right, I don’t know. I know it was Jacks tandem. I really hope, Jack did get home, had a family and needed more than a tandem for two. This tandem did a great job for Mary and I. We used it for transport to work in Newcastle that was five miles distance. I recall, in the mornings, coming past Coke Ovens, when they were quenching the white hot coke. Many gallons of water, thousands of gallons, dropped onto the white hot coke. A hot wet mist billowed up from the cooling tower as the water hit the hot coke. This mist, drifted across the roadway. As we cycled through it I didn’t mind the hot wet mist, now it would be banned as pollution. Particles of coke dust mingled in the mist, which covered 50 yards of roadway. Time moves on quickly and things changed, Mary had a baby. We moved to a job in a country Co-op.
