Lot 2220 2220 - ERN COWLEY: 1918-19 Carlton Football Jumper navy blue wool with 'CFC' logo sewn onto front, extremely rare, some minor faults. The earliest known jumper with the Carlton monogram. Together with book 'The Carlton Story' by Buggy & Bell [Melbourne, 1958] with signature of Ern Cowley and some sections highlighted; also Carlton 1919 Annual Report. [Ern Cowley played 23 games for Carlton between 1918-19, and kicked 51 goals. 'The Encyclopedia of AFL Footballers' states he was a clever and useful forward from Brunswick; he headed the League goalkicking with 34 goals in his debut season of 1918 and later crossed to VFA club Prahran. [The Football Record stated, "St Kilda scored the most meritorious victory by any league side for some years. It was not so much the brilliance of the football, but rather the dogged determination and real Aussie fighting spirit that enabled them to see it out and win a glorious victory with only 15 men".
