Their invaluable insights and suggestions led me to new discoveries in Poe. !iii ABSTRACT Poe’s early grievance in “Sonnet—To Science” (1829) against science’s epistemological authority transitioned into a lifelong journey of increasingly fruitful maneuvering. Poe’s engagement with science reached its apogee in Eureka: A Prose Poem (1848), his cosmological and aesthetic treatise published near the end of his life. While exalting intuition and poetic imagination as the pathway to Truth, Eureka builds upon, questions, and revises a wealth of scientific authorities and astronomical works. Many classic and recent studies, however, appreciate the poetic value but overlook or reject the scientific significance of the treatise. In contrast, some scholars assess Eureka by its response and contribution to specific theories and methods of nineteenth-century or contemporary science. Although some scholars have defended Eureka’s scientific achievements, they rarely investigate the role of science in Poe’s other works, especially his early or enigmatic ones. -

John Tresch Estrangement of Vision. Edgar Allan Poe’s Optics I. The scope of optics and its deviations In the first half of the nineteenth century, optics was not so much a single discipline as it was a fluctuating set of highly contested themes, practices, and technologies, located at the heart of various fields and at the intersections between them. This paper takes opti- cal themes as the basis for a reading of the innovative if fragmentary philosophy of art and nature in the writings of Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849). Rather than simply exemplify- ing or directly translating contemporary themes of scientific optics and related discourses about reason and the senses into a literary register, Poe alters them through satire, extrap- These fields included physiology, the study of the the eye, the retina, color perception, and the nerves; psychology, investigations of the senses and their relation to thought, emotions, memory, will, and attention; epistemology and its reflections upon the relation between visi- ble appearances, specific techniques and methods, and universal, general, repeatable, “ob- jective” knowledge. An arcade of technologies dealing with optics also emerged – increasing- ly fine lenses, more powerful telescopes and microscopes, the Daguerreotype, and optical and philosophical “toys” from stereoscopes and phenakistiscopes to stroboscopes, zoo- scopes, and kaleidoscopes. Technical innovations like polarimeters and interferometers aid- ed optical debates in physics, about the nature of light particles or waves. The luminiferous ether at center of these debates suggested possible links between light, heat, electricity, and magnetism. Mesmerists, somnambulists, and spiritualists claimed to navigate ether in their exploration of invisible realms; such metaphysical and theological uses of light had a respect- able scientific pedigree stretching to Newton’s Opticks. -

Poe escribió principalmente crítica literaria, narrativa breve y poesía. De los tres géneros, probablemente ha sido su poesía, con alguna excepción, la que ha recibido las críticas más adversas. En las páginas que siguen voy a intentar analizar las posibles razones de la falta de apreciación que ha despertado la producción poética de Poe. En primer lugar, se seleccionan tres sonetos, uno de la época inicial, «A la ciencia», otro de la intermedia, «A Zante», y otro de su madurez, «A mi madre», para a continuación analizarlos métricamente, considerando número de sílabas y número de ictus por verso, casos de promoción y democión y, en general, el modo en que se puede decir que Poe innova las formas de prosodia tradicional en los tres poemas. PALABRAS CLAVE: Poe; Análisis métrico; «A la ciencia»; «A Zante»; «A mi madre». ABSTRACT Edgar A. Poe devoted his writings mostly to criticism, short fiction and poetry. Of these three genres, his poetry, with a few exceptions, has been probably considered to be the weakest. In the following pages I intend to look at some of the possible reasons for this 77 general lack of appreciation surrounding Poe’s poetic production. I will start by selecting three sonnets, one from early youth, «To Science», one from his intermediate period, «To Zante», and one from maturity, «To My Mother», and then I will analyse them metrically by considering number of syllables and number of beats per line, instances of promotion and demotion and general possibilities for innovation in Poe’s use of traditional prosody in these three poems. -
Word Choice and the Value of a Dictionary
For Lessons 1–5, begin discussion of each poem by reading it aloud in class. Before a poem can be appreciated for its deeper meanings, it must first be read literally. We often overlook words we can already define. Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote in Nature, “Every word … if traced to its root, 1 is found to be borrowed from some material appearance. Right means Lesson One straight; wrong means twisted. Spirit primarily means wind; transgression, the crossing of a line; supercilious, the raising of the eyebrow.” Encourage your FOCUS: students to utilize the footnotes or endnotes when reading poetry. They should even look up words that are commonly understood, to understand Word Choice better the careful, conscious choices poets make. To develop your students’ and the Value of vocabulary, several words from each lesson’s assigned texts are defined in a Dictionary the margins of these lessons. ?? Discussion Activities and Writing Exercise ? The poem “Romance” is one that students may not fully understand, especially because ? they are likely to be familiar with only one meaning of the title word, which is a very modern one. The 1913 edition of Webster’s Revised Unabridged Dictionary, for instance, gives five definitions for “romance,” but doesn’t even include “a love affair or relationship between lovers.” Poe uses “romance” in the sense that was common to his time, to signify the VOCABULARY WORDS spirit of imagination or fancy (itself a term whose appropriate meaning may have to be From “Romance”: supplied). Explain to your students that words sometimes change meanings over time, and that the poem must be read in light of the earlier meaning of the title in order to be properly Romance, n. -

DESCRIPTION: This course studies the varied work of Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1845). A master of a number of literary genres—poetry, short fiction, and criticism, to name but three—Poe remains one of the most PoPular and PerPlexing figures in American literature. More than two centuries after his birth, he continues to exert an outsize influence on a number of literary traditions, including detective fiction, horror, science fiction, hoax, humor, and satire. Over the course of the term we will read many of Poe’s tales, a good deal of his Poetry, select Pieces of criticism, and his only novel, The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket (1837). In measuring Poe’s achievement, we will gauge his influence on subsequent generations of writers, including Charles Baudelaire, Arthur Conan Doyle, Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, Roger Corman, Stephen King, Toni Morrison, Joyce Carol Oates, and Mat Johnson. We will also catalog the strange Places that Poe shows uP in contemporary culture: midnight movies, rock operas, episodes of The Simpsons, even NFL franchises. Finally, the course will take full advantage of UT’s Harry Ransom Center, which houses one of the world’s largest collections of Poe materials. This course will: study in dePth the work of one of the most PoPular and PerPlexing figures in American literature; model methods of literary and cultural interPretation; and help students to imProve their critical thinking, reading, and writing skills. -

He is further credited with contributing to the emerging genre of science fiction. He was the first well-known American writer to try to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career. <b>Early Life</b> He was born Edgar Poe in Boston, Massachusetts, on January 19, 1809, the second child of actress Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins Poe and actor David Poe, Jr. He had an elder brother, William Henry Leonard Poe, and a younger sister, Rosalie Poe. Edgar may have been named after a character in William Shakespeare's King Lear, a play the couple was performing in 1809. His father abandoned their family in 1810, and his mother died a year later from consumption (pulmonary tuberculosis). Poe was then taken into the home of John Allan, a successful Scottish merchant in Richmond, Virginia, who dealt in a variety of goods including tobacco, cloth, wheat, tombstones, and slaves. The Allans served as a foster family and gave him the name "Edgar Allan Poe", though they never formally adopted him. The Allan family had Poe baptized in the Episcopal Church in 1812. -

In this study I examine the profound impact the advent of photography had on Poe's writing. In an 1840 article for Alexander's Weekly Messenger Poe called photography "the most important, and perhaps the most extraordinary triumph of modern science." Through a close study of selected fiction, essays, and letters I argue that Poe was the first writer to explore the myriad possibilities of the newly emergent photographic world. Pollin in the 1965 (American Notes and Queries, 4: 7- 9) linked "Tell- Tale Heart" to Bulwer's "Monos and Daimonos." BULWER-LYTTON'S INFLUENCE ON POE'S WORK, G. R. Thompson in the 1968 Studies in Sholt Fiction (6: 94-97) ESPECIALLY FOR AN AUTHOR'S "PRECONCEIVED and in the 1969 American Literature (41: 251-5) noted several DESIGN" borrowings from the bestselling novel Pelham. Robert Jacobs, in 1969, devoted a half to him for 180 years, surprisingly, reveals a dozen observations by dozen pages to Poe's obvious interest in Bulwer in Journalist and Poe on this novelist and philosopher ranging from comments to Critic. Arno Schmidt did likewise in 1970 in Zettels Tram articles.1 Several display Poe's esteem for Godwin's disciple, (Stuttgart), now first being translated into English. Alexander Edward Bulwer-Lytton (1803-73), whom he often ranked with, or Hammond in the 1972 Emerson Society Qualterly(18: 154-5) above, or below Dickens and Godwin.
