PIERRE JOVAN Born and raised in the windy city of Chicago, Illinois, Pierre spent his early years composing music and developing his own unique sound and style. Jovan’s personal headline and featured guest performances include appearances at ” A Salute to Miss America” at the Blackstone Theater in Chicago, the Mrs. United States Beauty Pageant at the Rio Hotel and the American Heart Association Gala at the Paris Hotel, both in Las Vegas. In addition, attendees of Las Vegas’ Official Academy Awards VIP Party, “Oscar Night America” at Spago’s, Caesar’s Palace, were treated to the multiple talents of Mr. Jovan during his special appearance there. JERON LOVINGS Jeron Lovings II was born in Oklahoma City and began singing at the tender age of 3 in his family’s church in Arbeka, Oklahoma. His father, a minister, didn’t allow for much music in the home other than gospel; the only exception being Sam Cooke, the gospel singer turned soulful pop crooner. Lovings landed a position with a production company that provided cruise ships with entertainment. This gave him the opportunity to sing everything from Pop and Opera to Motown and Broadway as he and his fellow performers were responsible for co-producing many of the shows in which they performed, traveling the globe for two years. DAVID PRESCOTT David began singing at the tender age of 4 years old. As a teen, his father and two older brothers formed a group called “The Prescotts”. David later left the group and began singing with a group calling themselves the “Sounds of Motion”. David’s positive reputation followed him and referrals led him to join the group SPECTRUM; and he hasn’t looked back since. Prescott keeps himself busy with solo projects, writing and producing original music, acting in movies such as Rush Hour 2 and pioneering the unique venture of providing late-night, romantic, super-stretch limo parties complete with live entertainment on board. His ultimate dream is to share his God-given gift, (his voice), with the world. CUSHNEY ROBERTS Cushney Robert’s remarkable voice has taken him from New York’s “21 Club”, to Chicago’s Pump Room, to headlining on the Las Vegas Strip. A versatile singer who’s musical roots and interests have ranged from classical & symphonic music, to pop, R&B and jazz; and he’s had the opportunity to perform them all. He later joined the show-band Edy Gainer & Dezire and toured the Reno/Tahoe circuit for several years before leaving to form his own group. SPECTRUM was formed specifically to portray Motown’s Four Tops in American Superstars’ & Legends in Concert’s Las Vegas tribute shows, which they did with great success for 6 1/2 years. The larger vision for SPECTRUM is presently being pursued and realized with the very popular tribute to Motown and R & B. Clients are not obligated to send in a list of general song requests. Many of our clients ask that the band just react to whatever their guests are responding to on the dance floor. Our clients that do provide us with song requests do so in varying degrees. Most clients give us a handful of songs they want played and avoided. Recently, we’ve noticed in increase in cli- ents customizing what the band plays and doesn’t play with very specific detail. If you de- sire the highest degree of control (allowing the band to only play within the margin of songs requested), we ask for a minimum of 100 requests. We want you to keep in mind that the band is quite good at reading the room and choosing songs that best connect with your guests. Seminal recordings included: David Bowie’s Young Americans; The Rolling Stones’ “Hot Stuff,” “Miss You,” “Dance Pt.1,” and “Emotional Rescue”; KISS’s “Strutter ’78,” and “I Was Made For Lovin’ You”; Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy“; and Elton John’s Thom Bell Sessions and Victim of Love. Though disco-rock was a great commercial success during the disco era, it has received limited acknowledgement in post-disco scholarship. This thesis addresses the lack of existing scholarship pertaining to disco-rock. It examines both disco and disco-rock as products of cultural shifts during the 1970s. Disco was linked to the emergence of underground dance clubs in New York City, while disco-rock resulted from the increased mainstream visibility of disco culture during the mid seventies, as well as rock musicians’ exposure to disco music. My thesis argues for the study of a genre (disco-rock) that has been dismissed as inauthentic and commercial, a trend common to popular music discourse, and one that is linked to previous debates regarding the social value of pop music.

    “My Girl”—The Temptations (1964) Added to the National Registry: 2017 Essay by Mark Ribowsky (guest post)* The Temptations, c. 1964 The Temptations’ 1964 recording of “My Girl” came at a critical confluence for the group, the Motown label, and a culture roiling with the first waves of the British invasion of popular music. The five-man cell of disparate souls, later to be codified by black disc jockeys as the “tall, tan, talented, titillating, tempting Temptations,” had been knocking around Motown’s corridors and studio for three years, cutting six failed singles before finally scoring on the charts that year with Smokey Robinson’s cleverly spunky “The Way You Do the Things You Do” that winter. It rose to number 11 on the pop chart and to the top of the R&B chart, an important marker on the music landscape altered by the Beatles’ conquest of America that year. Having Smokey to guide them was incalculably advantageous. Berry Gordy, the former street hustler who had founded Motown as a conduit for Detroit’s inner-city voices in 1959, invested a lot of trust in the baby-faced Robinson, who as front man of the Miracles delivered the company’s seminal number one R&B hit and million-selling single, “Shop Around.” Four years later, in 1964, he wrote and produced Mary Wells’ “My Guy,” Motown’s second number one pop hit. Gordy conquered the black urban market but craved the broader white pop audience. The Temptations were riders on that train. Formed in 1959 by Otis Williams, a leather-jacketed street singer, their original lineup consisted of Williams, Elbridge “Al” Bryant, bass singer Melvin Franklin and tenors Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams.

Dorf, Ph.D. April 2020 Abstract Recognized nationally as the funk capital of the world, Dayton, Ohio takes credit for birthing important funk groups (i.e. Ohio Players, Zapp, Heatwave, and Lakeside) during the 1970s and 80s. Through a combination of ethnographic and archival research, this paper offers a pedagogical approach to Dayton funk, rooted in the styles and works of the city’s funk legacy. Drawing from fieldwork with Dayton funk musicians completed over the summer of 2019 and pedagogical theories of including black music in the school curriculum, this paper presents a pedagogical model for funk instruction that introduces the ingredients of funk (instrumentation, form, groove, and vocals) in order to enable secondary school music programs to create their own funk rooted in local history.

    Soul – the sub-genres: • The Motown Sound • The Stax/Volt Sound • Atlantic Soul • Philadelphia Soul • 80s Soul/Urban ORIGINS Soul music eventually materialized in the early 1960s. It developed out of the Black music that became popular in the 1950's; that is, American gospel and R&B, performed primarily by black musicians almost exclusively to a black audience. Some of the most successful R&B artists of the 50s were the ones who made it into the pop charts in the 1960s with ‘Soul’ numbers. One such person was Ray Charles who was a major force in the early development of soul music with his unique style, which was of a rich blend of gospel, rhythm and blues and Jazz. musical characteristics Soul music, especially that from the 1960s, was simply ‘pop-orientated’ R&B. Therefore, Soul and R&B performances share common instrumentation, with the performing ensemble divided into a rhythm section and a horn section. Typically, the rhythm section consists of a drum kit, bass (electric or acoustic), piano (sometimes organ instead of or in addition to piano), and guitar, while the horn section features saxophones, trumpets, and occasionally trombones (though confusingly almost never, despite its name, horns). The emphasis on the horn section in most styles of soul and R&B has been one of the ways in which the music has historically been differentiated from white rock music, which has tended to be guitar dominated. Other common musical elements of Soul and R&B music include the use of: (1) the twelve--bar form, using a three line lyric, originating in earlier styles of blues; (2) call and response, whereby a singer or instrumentalist will sing or play a phrase and another vocalist or instrumentalist will answer with another phrase; (3) incessant repetition of musical notes, rhythms, phrases, or verses; the use of blue notes and (5) a tightly integrated and complex blending of instruments, in which it is often difficult to differentiate the separate sounds or instruments being played at a given moment.

Motown’s first of many famous groups such as The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Supremes, The Commodores, and The Jackson Five, and of course The Miracles the very first group to sign to Motown records, continue to keep the Motown sound alive by performing songs, such as: “Shop Around”, “I Second That Emotion”, “Tears Of A Clown”, “Love Machine”, “You’ve Really Got A Hold On Me”, “The Tracks Of My Tears”, “Ooh Baby Baby” and many more. Their performances at the Nassau Coliseum, the Inaugural Gala in Washington, D.C. and the 4th of July celebration at Duke University with over 60,000 fans in attendance, was simply unbelievable. In 1956, Bobby Rogers, Smokey Robinson, Claudette Robinson, Ronnie White and Pete Moore, childhood friends became The Miracles, and embarked on a career that would surpass their wildest dreams. Berry Gordy Motown’s founder recorded and released “Shop Around” a number one smash on all the charts, establishing The Miracles and giving Motown their first gold seller, this was the beginning of the record company and the group success for many years to come. The Miracles and Motown Records became known throughout the entire world. Over the course of the years, The Miracles continued to record chart-topping hits, including “Ooo Baby Baby”, “Going To A Go-Go”, “More Love”, “Mickey’s Monkey” and “Tears Of A Clown”.
