This session will provide you with practical skills on how to communicate during extraordinary situations. 10:45 Morning tea 11:00 A “warm” welcome to – 14 months leading Keynote South Australia’s Country Fire Service Mark Jones : Chief Officer, SA Country Fire Service Mark will share his experiences since taking on role of Chief Officer in September 2019, from a massive bushfire season through to the impacts of COVID-19. 11:30 Legal services in emergencies Paul Kelly & Dale Mazzachi : Principals, Norman Waterhouse Lawyers Paul and Dale will be discussing the role of legal advice and support, and the importance of understanding the legislative requirements during emergencies and how these affect councils.

Lieutenant Colonel Guy Moten : Chief of Staff, 9th Brigade, Australian Defence Force Lieutenant Colonel Guy Moten will provide an overview of how the ADF will manage and respond to emergency events in the future. Recent events have demonstrated how the ADF and local government can effectively work together to provide resources and support to Control Agencies, and the community, during emergencies. 14:00 LG Functional Support Group - stories from the ground Panel Jess Charlton : Coordinator Service Strategy and Innovation, Council (Facilitator) Steven Watson : Governance and Risk Coordinator, Lisa Cavanagh : Manager Parks and Landscapes, Lee Kightley : Emergency Management Project Coordinator, Sean Falkner : Manager Work Health Safety & Risk, City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters We will hear from LG staff that were deployed in a variety of operational roles during recent emergencies and explore how they contributed to the overall response of LG through the LGFSG. 14:30 Libraries during emergencies: They’re here and they’re free! Katherine Russell : Senior Policy Officer, Local Government Association This session will discuss the unique offerings of libraries and their value to the community during recent emergencies. 14:45 Afternoon tea 15:00 Extraordinary leadership in extraordinary times Keynote Professor Nicola Spurrier : Chief Public Health Officer, SA Health Professor Spurrier will be sharing her experiences during the COVID 19 emergency, the leadership challenges faced during this extraordinary event and the leadership required to galvanise an entire state response. 15:45 Extreme Heat Guide for Local Government launch Katherine Russell : Senior Policy Officer, Local Government Association Katherine will introduce us to the new guide which recognises the impact of heatwaves on communities and what councils can do to help 16:00 Is your council deployment ready? Deb Richardson : Director Community and Business Recovery, City of Port Adelaide Enfield This session will discuss the challenges and opportunities faced by councils and their staff when providing support during extraordinary situations. 16:15 Over the horizon Michael Arman : Director Strategy, Local Government Association Scott Loechel : Operations Manager (LGFSG) Scott and Michael will walk through what might be ‘over the horizon’ in terms of local government emergency management. This will include how our sector is responding to state and national reviews and policy shifts, the LGA’s commitment to responding to the Lawson review into the LGFSG and what comes next after the Council Ready program.
