Perfect weather, to catch up with family and friends or even to go camping. A great Aussie pastime. This was also a time for me to reflect on my childhood and the Easter traditions that were so typical for a German family. Easter is a special time for German- Austrians. Apart from the Easter Egg hunt, and going to Church, it was family time and enjoying beautiful meals, often a Goose or Roast Pork on Sunday, followed by Torte or Streusel Kuchen. Oma would help in the kitchen and Opa always had a small Cognac after the meal. Sweet memories. The club had another successful April Sunday lunch, this time being entertained by Jan and the Keys and Strings. She played a great range of music which was enjoyed by all. U3A who lease our building on week days completed their 1st Semester and after 2 weeks holiday had a celebratory Dinner on Saturday the 17th April. A great night with great food washed down with salubrious quantities of German Beer, and wine specially chosen by Vigneron Rod Farr. We also hosted the Albury Wodonga Wood Crafters. The club is no longer restricted in numbers, so please come along with your friends and join in the many functions the Committee has been working hard to organise. But remember you still must book. I would also like to mention Anzac Day. A day which was forged by the heroic efforts of Australian and New Zealand servicemen, and women. This yearly remembrance brings home the enormous sacrifices of young men and woman, most of who volunteered to serve their country. All of the original members of this club were greatly affected through no fault of their own. Not just serving in the military, but many including my parents and grandparents having to flee their homes and becoming displaced persons. Most lost dear family members in the conflict, as well as some being imprisoned in Russia after the war was over. My father lost two brothers, the youngest was only 17. We came to this great country to begin a new life, knowing we would be safe, and looking forward to a normal life without fearing what could happen again. We had to learn a new language, and even suffer the stigma of being “Krauts”, but I salute my Parents and the Club’s original founders/members for their courage, sacrifice and hard work in establishing a new life in Australia. I am proud to say that they have made a great contribution to our Community and their children/ grandchildren have assimilated as proud Aussies. We are so grateful to them, who put horrific memories behind them and just got on with life. Wiedersehen, (See you soon) Lutz Peters. President KAUPERT Maria 02 Feb 1935 - 04 April 2021 This month we said goodbye to another past member in Maria Kaupert who passed away peacefully at West- mont Cottages, Baranduda 4th April 2021. More than 500 castles and mansions are an invitation to stay and admire. The state of Brandenburg extends around the German capital. The verdant region surrounding Berlin boasts one UNESCO World Heritage site after another — from the parks and palaces of the Prussian kings in Potsdam, to modern Bauhaus architecture in Bernau, and Grumsin Beech Forest in the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve. ARTFUL GARDENS IN BRANDENBURG Sanssouci Palace — tourist magnet and recreational attraction Sanssouci Park is one of the most popular excursion destinations for people from Berlin and Potsdam, but also for the many visitors from abroad. Prussian King Frederick II had the rococo-style summer residence built in 1747. Since 1999, the park and palace have been included in the list of World Heritage Sites. A new garden for Sanssouci Palace 30 years after the death of Frederick II, the royal park around Sanssouci Palace was redesigned. Instead of the originally very straight hedges and paths, Lenne designed a concept with clusters of trees, curved paths and connected the park exten- sively with other Potsdam gardens The Alexandrovka Colony As early as 1826 Lenne was commissioned by Frederick William III to create a "Russian Colony" as a "permanent monument" to Tsar Alexander I. At the same time, a visual object was to be cre- ated for an exemplary fruit culture in Prussia. Lenne designed the entire complex as an "art village". It consists of twelve farmsteads and a supervisor's house and is also a World Heritage Site. Babelsberg Park Babelsberg Palace was built as a summer residence for the later Emperor Wilhelm I from 1833 to 1849 according to plans by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Lenne integrated his garden into the park land- scape along the Havel river. But he soon had a falling out with Wilhelm I, who handed over the project to Lenne's fiercest com- petitor, Prince Pückler. River Havel cove near Sacrow After 1842, Lenne designed the grounds around the Church of the Redeemer in Sacrow and the park of Sacrow Palace on the river Havel. Lenne often worked together with the architect of the church, Ludwig Persius. The church was built from 1841 to 1844 according to sketches by King Frederick William IV. He wanted it to be built in the shape of a ship. Q. Glienicker Bridge between Potsdam and Berlin is famous because... ? A. During the Cold War, the Berlin Wall ran along Glienicker Bridge. It was the site of famous exchanges of secret agents between the East and West.
