Autumn 2017 Page 2 Lower Kingswood Village News County Council report Dear Residents CAR & VAN PARKING IN LOWER KINGSWOOD Lower Kingswood residents are reporting more vans and cars parked on the footpath and also parked legally but left for days and weeks. You, as the reporting resident, can check vehicles for legality using the DVLA web site: www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-tax and this website provides a link through to the MID (Motor Insur- ance Database). Unfortunately, if the vehicle is legal (in terms of valid tax and insurance) then little can be done to resolve the matter, unless it is totally blocking the footpath, then the Bor- ough Council and County Council can at least issue a warning notice. However, if a vehicle you have noticed is or believed to be aban- doned, you can report the vehicle on the Borough Council web site or to Reigate Police. This will at least register your displeasure and the Council will then be aware of the vehicle; in many instances ambulances or fire engines cannot pass poorly parked cars and vans putting lives at risk. Surrey History Centre in Woking was awarded Archive Service Accreditation by the UK Archive Service Accreditation Commit- tee for demonstrating high standards in looking after records and making them accessible to the public. Treasures housed in its six miles of shelving include letters from Henry VIII, Lady Jane Grey, Lewis Carroll and soldiers serving in the trenches of World War I as well as a vast array of documents recording the lives of millions of Surrey people over nine centuries. There are also beautiful parchment maps of the county stretching back to the 16th century. Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “Collections housed at Surrey History Centre chronicle the county’s rich and varied past since the middle ages and I’m de- lighted that the meticulous work of staff in preserving such an extraordinary array of documents, images and manuscripts and bringing them to a wider audience has been recognised.” Residents’ Association In granting the status, the accreditation panel hailed “real strength in the service” and praised it for “proactively working Committee report (con’t) with the communities of Surrey” as well as its effective collec- tions management. Autumn 2017 Page 8 Lower Kingswood Village News CALLING ALL GIRLS WHO ARE 10-14 YEARS OLD Do you like making new friends? Do you like learning new skills? Do you like camping and cooking on fires? Do you have a creative streak? Do you like acting? Do you like working together to complete a task? Do you like new and active games? Have you thought about becoming a Guide? Every Friday evening (term time) we aim to give girls between the ages of 10 and 14, the chance to develop their individuality, grow their life skills, while making new friends and getting involved in the community! ‘ScoutAbout’ 2017 was truly amaz- ing! The girls had a weekend packed with a wide range of activities in the sunny weather and they cannot wait for the next time. We had a busy summer term making the most of the light evenings doing assault courses in the recreation ground and wide games, as well as camp fire cooking in preparation for summer camp. This year we are back at Blacklands Farm and going on their very new activity, crate stack and climbing challenge. Camping is a highlight of the year for both the girls and us leaders, so our fingers are crossed for dry weather and the girls remember their fire lighting and tent pitching skills! Does this sound like something you or someone ages 10-14 would en- joy? We would love to have you come along and meet us and discov- er what we do and help our unit grow.
