1970 Porsche Chassis 917-024 www.porscheroadandrace.com On Auction: 1970 Porsche chassis 917-024 Published: 21st July 2017 By: Glen Smale Online version: https://www.porscheroadandrace.com/on-auction-1970-porsche-chassis-917-024/ 1970 Gulf Racing Porsche 917 K (chassis #917-024) If you would like to own a piece of motor racing history, no, make that a very significant piece of racing history, then pay attention. Porsche 917 K (chassis #917-024), once owned by the master of the 917 himself, Jo Siffert, was part of his private collection. 917-024 did not see much racing action in period, being used by Brian Redman and Mike Hailwood for testing at the Le Mans test day in 1970, where Redman set the fastest time of the event. It was also used for testing at the Nürburgring and the VW test track at Ehra Lessien in Lower Saxony. www.porscheroadandrace.com 1970 Gulf Racing Porsche 917 K (chassis #917-024) The car was then sold to Porsche factory driver, Jo Siffert, who leased the car to Steve McQueen’s Solar Productions for use in the making of the memorable and influential film, Le Mans, in 1971. According to research by noted 917 historian and author, the late Walter Näher, 917-024 was utilised as a camera car during the production of the film, and also starred extensively in the film. Following its introduction to the big screen, 917-024 remained in Siffert’s private collection until his passing. www.porscheroadandrace.com 1970 Gulf Racing Porsche 917 K (chassis #917-024) Taken in the prime of his motor racing career, Siffert died in 1971 at the age of 35 years when his BRM overturned at Brands Hatch, trapping him under the burning car. Chassis 024 led his funeral procession through the streets of Fribourg in Switzerland, which was reflective of the 917’s importance in his life. www.porscheroadandrace.com 1970 Gulf Racing Porsche 917 K (chassis #917-024) It was sold to a private collector in Paris in the mid 1970s. This car then remained hidden and largely unknown for roughly 25 years, before re-emerging in 2001 from a warehouse outside Paris in one of the greatest ‘barn find’ discoveries ever. Covered in dust and still in its Gulf JWA livery from Siffert’s ownership, 024 was remarkably untouched after more than two decades in hiding. Even the original space-saver spare, Firestone fuel cell, and Firestone Super Sports GP tyres were still in place, as well as a handwritten tag hanging from the key with instructions to run lean given the Le Mans set up, believed to be notated by Porsche driver Herbert Linge. www.porscheroadandrace.com 1970 Gulf Racing Porsche 917 K (chassis #917-024) Chassis 917-024 has recently benefited from an exceptional restoration, led by specialist Graber Sportgarage in Switzerland, and was finished in 2017. Because of its limited competition life, it has not been damaged like so many race cars of its kind were in period, making it one of the most correct and significant 917s today. “The Porsche 917 is among the most significant competition cars ever created and they remain highly coveted by knowledgeable enthusiasts worldwide,” noted David Gooding, President and Founder of Gooding & Company. “This example, with its fascinating history, iconic livery and exacting restoration, is among the most exciting racing cars that has ever come to public auction.” Estimate: $13,000,000-$16,000,000 www.porscheroadandrace.com Where: Gooding & Company, Pebble Beach Auctions, 18/19 August 2017 For further details contact: David Brynan, T: +1 310 899 5173 For a detailed history of the 917’s racing achievements click here Written by: Glen Smale Images by: Gooding & Company/Mathieu Heurtault Share this:.

It is a pleasure to welcome you all to México as we celebrate our country’s return to the FIA Formula 1 World Championship calendar. Twice before, from 1963 to 1970 and from 1986 to 1992, México City has been the scene of exciting World Championship races. We enjoy a proud heritage in the sport: from the early brilliance of the Rodríguez brothers, the sterling efforts of Moisés Solana and Héctor Rebaque to the modern achievements of Esteban Gutíerrez and Sergio Pérez, Mexican drivers have carved their own names in the history of the sport. A few of you may have been here before. You will find many things the same – yet different. The race will still take place in the parkland of Magdalena Mixhuca where great names of the past wrote their own page in Mexican history, but the lay-out of the 21st-century track is brand-new.

ACES WILD ACES WILD The Story of the British Grand Prix THE STORY OF THE Peter Miller Motor racing is one of the most 10. 3. BRITISH GRAND PRIX exacting and dangerous sports in the world today. And Grand Prix racing for Formula 1 single-seater cars is the RIX GREATS toughest of them all. The ultimate ambition of every racing driver since 1950, when the com petition was first introduced, has been to be crowned as 'World Cham pion'. In this, his fourth book, author Peter Miller looks into the back ground of just one of the annual qualifying rounds-the British Grand Prix-which go to make up the elusive title. Although by no means the oldest motor race on the English sporting calendar, the British Grand Prix has become recognised as an epic and invariably dramatic event, since its inception at Silverstone, Northants, on October 2nd, 1948. Since gaining World Championship status in May, 1950 — it was in fact the very first event in the Drivers' Championships of the W orld-this race has captured the interest not only of racing enthusiasts, LOONS but also of the man in the street. It has been said that the supreme test of the courage, skill and virtuosity of a Grand Prix driver is to w in the Monaco Grand Prix through the narrow streets of Monte Carlo and the German Grand Prix at the notorious Nürburgring. Both of these gruelling circuits cer tainly stretch a driver's reflexes to the limit and the winner of these classic events is assured of his rightful place in racing history.

The engine is a Porsche Cayenne-based V8 built as an independent project and mated to a Riley Chassis. Pre-race favorites BMW Riley, Ford Riley, Ford Dallara, and last year's winner, the Brumos Porsche Riley, all led the race at various times during the day and night, but mechanical gremlins and miscues on the track derailed those ef- forts, and the Action Express team came away with the win. In the Rolex GT class, it looked like a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup victory was in the works once the leading Camaro broke overnight, but the leading TRG Porsches lost their advantage in the last four hours of the event. First, the #71 TRG Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, with NASCAR star Bobby Labonte at the controls, ran out of fuel on the course and had to be towed into the infield, where the TRG crew met the car, gave it a dump-can of fuel, and got it back on the track.

  • Porsche Congratulates Hans Herrmann the Racing Driver Celebrates His 90Th Birthday Today
newsroom Company Feb 23, 2018 Porsche congratulates Hans Herrmann The racing driver celebrates his 90th birthday today. The endurance and Monoposto specialist, born in Stuttgart in 1928, is regarded as one of the most reliable and consistent race drivers of all time. In the course of his motor sport career, Hans Herrmann won more than 80 overall and best of class victories, most of them for Porsche. The proverbial “Hans im Glück” (Hans in Luck) at the wheel celebrated his greatest successes with sports cars from Zuffenhausen: in the Mille Miglia, the Targa Florio, the Carrera Panamericana and of course in Le Mans, with the first overall victory for Porsche in 1970, driving a 917. His career began appropriately: in 1952, in a private Porsche 356, he took part in hill climbs, rallies and reliability runs. The very next year, he came fifth in the Lyon-Charbonnières Rally, together with Richard von Frankenberg in a Porsche 356. Thereupon Porsche’s racing manager at that time, Huschke von Hanstein, brought him into Porsche works team. In 1953, Herrmann went to the start for the first time in the 24 Hours of Le Mans where, together with co-pilot Helm Glöckler in a Porsche 550 Coupé, he gained a best of class victory in the category up to 1.5 liters capacity at his very first try. Page 1 of 3 In 1953, Herrmann gained a best of class victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans After Herrmann had also secured the title of German Sports Car Champion in the same year, he attracted the attention of Mercedes- Benz head of racing Alfred Neubauer, who integrated the 26-year-old into his works team along with Juan Manuel Fangio, Stirling Moss and Karl Kling.

  • Hans Herrmann – the Le Mans Winner
Hans Herrmann – the Le Mans winner After 20 years competing in Le Mans, Hans Herrmann claimed the first overall victory for Porsche. Together with Richard Attwood, the man from Swabia won the 24-hour race in a Porsche 917. After two decades in racing, Hans Herrmann was regarded as a driver to whom successes came naturally and who could survive hair-raising accidents with nothing more than mild injuries. Blessed with charm and talent, he enjoyed a stellar career. His first race was in 1952, when he drove his own Porsche 356 in the Hessian Winter Night Drive. His first widely noted success came a short time later in 1954, when he was co-driver to Herbert Linge in the Porsche 550 A at the Mille Miglia. They won the class and took sixth place in the overall standings. The Swabian duo trained diligently and concentrated well – and they were skilled drivers. Reflecting on this Mille Miglia, Herbert Linge says, ‘His feeling for the car and his automatic security when pushing the limits were incredible!’ Also in 1954, Herrmann took part in Formula One with the Mercedes W 196, completing the fastest lap in Reims. An accident in Monte Carlo and the withdrawal of Mercedes prevented a glittering career in Grand Prix racing. Herrmann drove for Borgward and later for Abarth. However, he celebrated his greatest victories with Porsche. For instance, he claimed overall victory with Olivier Gendebien in the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1960 and duplicated this result in the same Porsche 718 RS 60 with Jo Bonnier as a partner at the Targa Florio.
