1 Memorandum Ownership Status of Hotels and Other
MEMORANDUM OWNERSHIP STATUS OF HOTELS AND OTHER ACCOMODATION FACILITIES IN THE OCCUPIED PART OF THE REPUBLIC OF CYPRUS The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus hereby publishes a list1 of hotels situated in the Turkish occupied part of Cyprus. The majority of these hotels belong to Greek Cypriot displaced persons who were forced to leave their properties following the Turkish invasion of 1974 or have been built illegally on properties belonging to displaced Greek Cypriots, in violation of the latter’s property rights and without their consent. A number of hotels belong to Turkish Cypriots or have been built on land belonging to Turkish Cypriots. The European Court of Human Rights, in its Judgment of 18 December 1996, on the individual application of the Greek Cypriot displaced owner from Kyrenia, Mrs. Titina Loizidou, against Turkey, and in the Fourth Interstate Application of Cyprus against Turkey of 10 May 2001, upheld the rights of the refugees to their properties. In the Loizidou case, the Court ordered the Government of Turkey to compensate the applicant for the time period of deprivation of use of her property and to provide full access and allow peaceful enjoyment of her property in Kyrenia. The right of the displaced owners to their properties was reconfirmed in the decision of the European Court of Human Rights (Dec. 2005) regarding the application of Myra Xenides- Arestis v. Turkey, and has since been repeatedly reconfirmed in a multitude of cases brought by Greek Cypriot owners of property in the occupied part of Cyprus against Turkey]. It should also be reminded that, according to the United Nations Principles on Housing and Property Restitution for Refugees and Displaced Persons (the Pinheiro principles) “all refugees and displaced persons have the right to have restored to them any housing, land or property of which they were arbitrarily or unlawfully deprived..”.

Speech of His Grace Bishop Porfyrios of Neapolis “Religious Freedom in the Republic of Cyprus” at the event: “Human Rights within the European Union” (05-12-2018). In July 1974, as many of you will know, Turkey invaded Cyprus with a large military force, taking advantage of the coup d’état carried out by the military junta in Greece against Archbishop Makarios III, the elected President of the Republic of Cyprus. On August 16, the fighting stopped but 43 years on, the wounds to body of the island have still not healed. Some 37% of its territory remains occupied by the Turkish army, which maintains a force of 40,000 soldiers there. In so doing, it has made Cyprus one of the most heavily militarised places in the world. Some 180,000 Greek Cypriots were expelled from their homes and properties. Today, around 500 remain enclaved in the Karpas peninsula and the Maronite villages. In November 1983, the occupation regime declared the independence of the so-called “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus”, in a move that was condemned by the United Nations Security Council. No other country, apart from Turkey, has recognised the illegal entity. As a result of the invasion, Christian monuments and those of other faiths, sacred and archaeological sites were desecrated, looted and destroyed. Everything that adorned the 575 Orthodox churches in the occupied areas was stolen. Some 20,000 holy icons, wall paintings, mosaics, gospels, sacred vessels, manuscripts, old books, iconostases and, generally speaking, anything that could be stolen for material gain was looted and sold abroad.

PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION ORGANIZED BY THE CYPRUS MUNICIPALITIES UNDER TURKISH MILITARY OCCUPATION THE DESTRUCTION OF THE EUROPEAN CIVILIZATION OF CYPRUS BY TURKEY THE TRAGEDY GOES ON… “If we should hold our peace, the stones will cry out” (Luke 19: 40) THE DESTRUCTION OF THE EUROPEAN CIVILIZATION OF CYPRUS BY TURKEY THE TRAGEDY GOES ON… “If we should hold our peace, the stones will cry out” (Luke 19: 40) The photographic exhibition is organized by the nine occupied municipalities of Cyprus: Ammochostos, Kyrenia, Morphou, Lysi, Lapithos, Kythrea, Karavas, Lefkoniko, and Akanthou. The exhibition aims at sensitizing the broader public to the tragic consequences of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974. An effort is made to trace, as much as possible, the pain caused by the war and the uprooting of tenths of thousands of people from their homes. At the core of the presentation lies the systematic destruction of cultural heritage in the island’s occupied areas, which persists to this day as a result of ethnic cleansing and religious fanaticism. As proof of the above, damages to archaeological sites, ecclesiastical monuments and all non-Muslim cemeteries, as well as thefts intended to offer antiquities for sale at a profit, are showcased here. In some cases, photographic evidence which has been brought to light for the first time is put forth. This exhibition is divided into thematic units which are separated from one another by their different colours. Each panel includes a title and a brief text, whilst being supplemented by pertinent ‘before and after 1974’ visual material. The first unit introduces the nine occupied municipalities, with a historical outline, their most significant monuments and their present state.

During the Middle Ages, Cyprus experienced raids that would devastate the coastal landscape. Coastal towns and villages were destroyed, and many of them never rebuilt. Fortifications were constructed to defend the coastline from raiders and potential invaders. Scholars believe that during times of heavy raiding coastal settlements are abandoned in favor of inland settlements. This theory has not been tested using Geographic Information System (GIS). This study used GIS to test the area of influence raiders could exert inland during a raid. Based on past research the extent of influence was determined to be 3000 m inland. The Network Analyst tool was used to determine the shortest routes raiders and defenders took to reach undefended villages and churches. The time needed for defenders and attackers to reach sites was determined using a hiking calculator. Based on the results of the test the majority of sites are situated outside the range of raiders influence. Reading and Designing the Area of Lambousa-Karavas: Acheiropoietos Monastery, Cyprus First digital survey of the monastic complex Carmine CANALETTI 1 | Alessandro CAMIZ 2 1 DIDA Università degli Studi di Firenze | 2 GAU International Centre for Heritage Studies, Faculty of Architecture, Design & Fine Arts, Cyprus Abstract: The object of this work is a survey of the Acheiropoietos monastery in Lambousa-Karavas, in Northern Cyprus. The study is the result of an international workshop in Girne, whose aim was the first survey campaign with laser scanning technology on this site. The Acheiropoietos Monastery has been under military control until 2006. During military occupation of the area the complex suffered a long process of decay that led to an advanced state of disrepair. The monastic complex is composed of three buildings: the church dates back to late byzantine period; it has been built between 11 th and 12 th century on the ruins of an Early Christian basilica, as can be seen by the remains in the external part of the apse. The original Greek cross plan has a dome. Later on two inner narthexes and a gothic external narthex were added to the church in different periods. These additions led to the present structure made of three aisles separated by pillars. Inside the church there is a wooden iconostasis and a baroque pulpit. In restricted areas an opus sectile floor can be seen and at the entrance of the nave there is a 17 th century headstone. In the north side of the church the second block is situated: a two-floored building with external porticoes of 11 th century.
