All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, „Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs·in our own languages we hear them speaking about GodÊs deeds of power.‰ V.     Min-Ad: Israel Studies in Musicology Online, Vol. 13, 2015-16 Irène Guletsky - The Mass as the Liturgical Calendar and Computus The Mass as the Liturgical Calendar and Computus IRÈNE GULETSKY During the second half of the 1990s, I had the good fortune to work on my doctoral thesis at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem under the supervision of two amazing scholars, professors Judith Cohen and Dalia Cohen (of blessed memory).1 I remember with pleasure this time spent in intensely creative work, our meetings, fascinating discussions, and occasional heated debates on various issues to do with the philosophical and theoretical views of the Renaissance, the form of the Mass and methods of its analysis. Our opinions did not always coincide—a consequence of different schools and scientific traditions. Judith was a disciple of Kurt von Fischer, and she, like her mentor, regarded the Mass primarily from the standpoint of the embodiment of the original source and the features of the counterpoint (a completely justified view).2 This strictly academic approach favored by Judith, accounted for her rather cautious, even skeptical attitude to my ideas of analyzing the cycle form as a kind of structure and a crystal, which characterize this genre as a whole. Admittedly, Judith had sufficiently valid reasons for being skeptical. After all, it is a known fact that the Mass—the five-part Ordinary—was not performed as a single separate composition, but had been distributed through the liturgy, and thus, as many scholars would have it, could hardly be defined as a form.3 Judith would bring the flight of my ideas firmly back to earth, dampening my fervor by demanding proof for every assertion, making me perform meticulous work on the text and bibliography.

  • Quinquagesima Sunday
    Quinquagesima Sunday - Fortitude In the name of the Father… I have spoken previously about the Beatitudes articulating progress in the spiritual life, i.e., progress in charity. St Augustine paired each Beatitude with a Gift of the Holy Ghost.1 Drawing on this, the first Beatitude of the Poor in Spirit was characterized by humility, i.e., the disposition to be conformed to God’s measure, and Fear of the Lord relating to God’s transcendence and our indigence.2 Endurance being the greater part of fortitude, the second Beatitude of the meek had the notion of stability, characterized by patience and the Gift of piety which disposes to be formed by superiors and tradition.3 The third Beatitude of mourning was characterized by the Gift of knowledge whereby we judge rightly about creatures which can be a snare, and penance whereby we make good for past sins.4 St Augustine’s explication of the Beatitudes drew on his own experience: proud, he was disdainful of divine authority; a rhetorician and philosopher, he was derisory toward the simplicity of the scriptures; carnal, he was entangled in sins of the flesh. The first three Beatitudes pertain to a well-ordered love of self. Noting that the first effect of virtue is to draw us away from evil, St Thomas discerns Our Lord warning against false notions of happiness - possessions, power and pleasure - obstacles to attaining true happiness. The fourth Beatitude - blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they shall be satisfied - introduces the well-ordered love of neighbor, for justice pertains to the common good.

    Fœderatio Internationalis Una Voce Positio N. 20 THE SEASON OF SEPTUAGESIMA, AND VIGILS AND OCTAVES, IN THE EXTRAORDINARY FORM OCTOBER 2014 From the General Introduction These papers, commissioned by the International Federation Una Voce, are offered to stimulate and inform debate about the 1962 Missal among Catholics ‘attached to the ancient Latin liturgical tradition’, and others interested in the liturgical renewal of the Church. They are not to be taken to imply personal or moral criticism of those today or in the past who have adopted practices or advocated reforms which are subjected to criticism. In composing these papers we adopt the working assumption that our fellow Catholics act in good will, but that nevertheless a vigorous and well-informed debate is absolutely necessary if those who act in good will are to do so in light of a proper understanding of the issues. The authors of the papers are not named, as the papers are not the product of any one person, and also because we prefer them to be judged on the basis of their content, not their authorship. The International Federation Una Voce humbly submits the opinions contained in these papers to the judgement of the Church. Septuagesima, and Vigils & Octaves: Abstract The calendar of the Extraordinary Form contains a number of features not found in the Ordinary Form, notably the season of Septuagesima, the number and treatment of vigils, and the number of octaves. Before the reform of 1955 there was a much greater number of vigils and octaves. These very ancient features of the calendar allowed the Faithful to enter more deeply into the mysteries presented by the Church’s year by facilitating their preparation for and subsequent meditation upon those mysteries.

  • Sermon for Quinquagesima Sunday 2019
    Quinquagesima Sunday Dearly Beloved, Today, we mark Quinquagesima Sunday, the last Sunday before Lent begins. The Church has given us this season of two and half weeks, in order to prepare us for Lent, the season of penance and purification, for it is the acceptable time in which we make up for our negligence the rest of the year. If we spend Lent badly or lazily, we will suffer grave spiritual misfortune; many of us struggle spiritually even now because we wasted the previous Lent. In order to avoid this, the Mass readings for these three Sundays have been purposefully intense: the parable of the workers in the vineyard, reminding us that we must work at our salvation and not assume we will receive the reward of eternal life; the parable of the sower, reminding us that we can be dried up by temptation and trial or choked by desire for riches and comfort; and today’s account, which serves as a sort of parable in that although the blind man certainly existed as an historical person, we also gain much fruit from considering him as a sign of our own situation. The story of the blind man on the road is deliberately placed at this time in the calendar because Jesus is passing by, on His way to Jerusalem, and thus on the way to Calvary. Like the man whom Jesus healed, we are blind. Our sins, our selfishness, our attachment to comfort and pleasure and possessions all produce a sort of slime on the eyes of our heart that hardens as the months go by.
