■ RIVER CITY ROUNDABOUT THE CHICAGO WAY By David Laprad

You wanna get Capone? Here’s how you get him: He pulls a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue. at’s the Chicago way, and that’s how you get Capone! So says Jim Malone (Sean Connery) to Eliot Ness (Kevin Costner) in a classic scene in “ e Untouchables.” As I waited for my order at Old Chicago Pizza & Taproom at Northgate Mall, I re-imagined Con- nery’s delicious bit of dialogue like this: You wanna good pizza? Here’s how you get one: Before the chef makes the crust, you order it thick. Before he lays down the sauce, you order it house-style. at’s the Chicago way, and that’s how you get a good pizza! Opened last month in Hixson, Old Chicago Pizza & Taproom is a casual dining restaurant featuring Chicago-style pizzas and craft beer. Although not a Chattanooga original (there are 96 Old Chicago Pizza & Taprooms in 22 states), the restaurant does o er a variety of Tennessee craft beers from Chattanooga Brewing Company and Big River Brewing Company. Also, among the variety of 14 specialty pizzas, two will bene t the Chattanooga Food Bank: the Chicago 7 (pepperoni, Italian sausage, red onions, black olives, green peppers, sliced mushrooms, and the house sauce) and the Meat Me (four meaty toppings garnished with green olives and fresh basil). When the CIA catches wind of the interview, they propose Dave and Aaron assassinate the leader using a time-delayed poison administered during a handshake. ey’re reluctant at rst, but eventually agree, largely because Dave has the hots for one of the CIA agents, Lacey. ere’s a funny running gag about characters “honey trapping” (the movie uses a dierent word that can’t be printed in a newspaper) each other, and that certainly happened here. Kim proves to be a charmer, and he and Dave spend a lot of time bonding, nding common ground (like how they both felt pressured by their parents to be someone they’re not), and singing Katy Perry songs. Just as Dave is beginning to consider ditching the plan to kill Kim, he nds a grocery store stocked with fake food. While “ e Interview” is packed with over-the-top silliness, juvenile dialogue, and improvised scenes (Franco almost takes a few bits too far, but he knows just when to pull back), Rogen and the other writers ingeniously use the public’s perception of Kim as a ruthless dictator and a master manipulator to create what feels like a chillingly accurate portrayal of the man. Even more shrewdly, through Dave’s initial sympathy for Kim, they explore whether America has done more harm than good by establishing itself as the police force of the world. e level of commentary is impressive for a lm centered on broad comedy. Props go as well to actor Randall Park, who delivers a superb portrayal of Kim, making him funny, human, and terrify- ing, depending on what each scene needs. I’d love to see him nominated for an Oscar in the supporting actor category, but I doubt that will happen. As a whole, “ e Interview” is lowbrow comedy at its loosest and goosiest. Still, I laughed at a lot of the gags, laughed really See CRITIC’S CORNER, page 13 12 | January 9-15, 2015 Hamilton County Herald www.hamiltoncountyherald.com
