The Ridgeway, an old medieval route into London, is itself is characterised by many large 17th and 18th Century villas set in extensive grounds. These include the Grade II* Listed Holcombe House, which adjoins Mill Heights and dates from the 1770s. The wider area comprises a mixture of interwar housing estates interspersed with much open green space. It is economically affluent with a higher than average proportion of largely commuting professional residents.

Mill Hill Village’s modern day retail centre is at Mill Hill Broadway, which bustles with desirable shops, restaurants and cafés, the library and other services. A little further away, Mill Hill East also has a local retail centre and a new supermarket on the site of an old gasworks.
