Towards Edgware: Capitol Way, Edgware Road, Colindale Avenue, Grahame Park Way, Lanacre Avenue, Quakers Course, Lanacre Avenue, Grahame Park Way, Corner Mead, Field Mead, Grahame Park Way, Bunns Lane, Mill Hill Broadway, Mill Hill Broadway Station Forecourt, Mill Hill Broadway, Bunns Lane, Lyndhurst Avenue, Deansbrook Road, Edgware High Street, Station Road, Edgware Bus Station. Route 305 Towards Kingsbury: Edgware Bus Station, Station Road, Hale Lane, Deans Lane, Orange Hill Road, Watling Avenue, Burnt Oak Broadway, Stag Lane, Princes Avenue, Honeypot Lane. Towards Edgware: Honeypot Lane, Kingsbury Circle, Honeypot Lane, Princes Avenue, Stag Lane, Burnt Oak Broadway, Watling Avenue, Orange Hill Road, Deans Lane, Hale Lane, Station Road, Edgware Bus Station. The following additional streets were satisfactorily tested (extended from Kingsbury via route PR2 to St. Raphael’s Estate): Towards St. Raphael’s Estate: Fryent Way, The Paddocks, Forty Lane, Bridge Road, Wembley Park Drive, Empire Way, Fulton Road, Rutherford Way, Engineers Way, Fifth Way, Fourth Way, Great Central Way, Tesco Superstore Perimeter Road, Drury Way, Besant Way, Pitfield Way, circle roundabout at Tillets Close and return to Pitfield Way. Towards Edgware: Pitfield Way, Besant Way, Drury Way, Great Central Way, Tesco Superstore Perimeter Road, Drury Way, Great Central Way, South Way, First Way, Engineers Way, Rutherford Way, Fulton Road, Empire Way, Wembley Park Drive, Bridge Road, Forty Lane, The Paddocks, Fryent Way. Proposed Route via Colindeep Lane: Edgware Road, Colindeep Lane, Watford Way (northbound) return Watford Way (southbound), Colindeep Lane, Edgware Road. OBSERVATIONS The above streets were generally traversed successfully. However, the following should be noted: Route 251 Totteridge Station stand – to prevent parked cars obstructing stand (and approach), double yellow lines, hatching, and enforcement are required. The right turn from Highwood Hill into Lawrence Street is tight (a traffic island and speed humps causing manoeuvring difficulties). Also, east of this junction, there is a blind bend leading down from Holcombe Hill. POSSIBLE REQUIRED ACTION: London Borough of Barnet/LUL Route 288 The left turn from Edgware Way into Broadfields Avenue needed careful manoeuvring using the centre lane to take the corner (traffic island causing problems). On return, there is still the problem of grounding (even if bus proceeds south across into Broadfields Avenue). Parking restrictions are required in Edgwarebury Lane (southern end) and Glengall Road. A possible stand at Broadfields was investigated but found to be unsuitable. The entire length of Broadfields Avenue, up to and including the junction, with Hale Lane was tested satisfactorily (camber problems apart at Edgware Way). A suggestion was put forward to create a new stand in Queensbury, Honeypot Lane outside Safeway. This would obviate the need for the double run around the back of Safeway when picking up. POSSIBLE REQUIRED ACTION: LB Barnet/TfL/LBSL Op Services (Queensbury stand) Route 303 The right turn from Grahame Park Way into Lanacre Avenue (via the central reservation slip road) is tight. Indeed, drivers on this route have been instructed by Metroline to proceed to roundabout at junction with Colindale Avenue, circle and return, rather than make this manoeuvre. The slip road needs alterations to accommodate the longer buses. There is a very tight left turn from Edgware Road into Colindale Avenue, which could only be accomplished by using the centre lane to take the corner. A Stats box at corner of this junction would probably not be moved (due to excessive cost). Therefore, the only answer is if the stop line in Colindale Avenue is moved some 3 to 5 metres back and/or the left turn lane from Edgware Road is altered. Speed tables in Corner Mead could cause problems for heavily loaded buses. POSSIBLE REQUIRED ACTION: LB Barnet/TfL Route 305 There is a very tight left turn from Prince’s Avenue into Stag Lane (mini-roundabout) which involves the bus traversing over the southbound centre and stop lines in Stag Lane. The stop lines and profile of the mini- roundabout would require alteration. The extension to St Raphael’s estate posed no problems. The St Raphael’s estate stand may require extending in Pitfield Way. POSSIBLE REQUIRED ACTION: LB Barnet/LBSL CONCLUSIONS The above actions and points would need to be taken into consideration before the above vehicle type is approved for use on some of the sections tested. .

REPORT FROM THE INSPECTORATE Hendon College June 1994 THE FURTHER EDUCATION FUNDING COUNCIL THE FURTHER EDUCATION FUNDING COUNCIL The Further Education Funding Council (FEFC) has a statutory duty to ensure that there are satisfactory arrangements to assess the quality of provision in the further education sector. It discharges this duty in part through its inspectorate, which reports on each college in the sector every four years. The Council’s inspectorate also assesses and reports on a national basis in specific curriculum areas and advises the Council’s quality assessment committee. GRADE DESCRIPTORS The procedures for assessing quality are given in FEFC Circular 93/28. In the course of inspecting colleges, inspectors are expected to assess the strengths and weaknesses of each aspect of provision they inspect. Their assessments are set out clearly in their reports. Inspectors also summarise their judgements on the balance between strengths and weaknesses using a five-point scale. Each grade on the scale has the following descriptor: • grade 1 – provision which has many strengths and very few weaknesses • grade 2 – provision in which the strengths clearly outweigh the weaknesses • grade 3 – provision with a balance of strengths and weaknesses • grade 4 – provision in which the weaknesses clearly outweigh the strengths • grade 5 – provision which has many weaknesses and very few strengths.
