Our most attended shows were our pantomime Peter Pan Finally, I pay tribute to my fellow directors and our Company starring Marti Pellow, Darren Day and The Grumbleweeds, Secretary, for their contributions at meetings and support Matilda the Musical, Les Misérables, Mamma Mia and of myself and the Theatre. Our excellent governance and The Bodyguard. positive approach, reflected across the whole Company, ensures the integrity of all aspects of our business. We continue to take our advocacy role seriously as part of the vibrant local cultural scene. Our Engage work goes from strength to strength with over 34,000 people taking part in our community initiatives, whether as part of our Open Voices Choir, aimed at retired residents, or in the numerous public Malcolm Le Bas performances of our Youth Theatre. Chairman We thank our loyal sponsors and partners Paris Smith, While 2019/20 was a great year contributing £1.3 million to WE ARE CONFIDENT OF PROTECTING THE LONGER TERM Beechdean, The London Hotel, Geo Speciality Chemicals, our reserves we have had to utilise that money and far more as Hildon, Brymor Construction, Peter Cooper, Womble Bond- COVID-19 has hit our industry. There is no under-estimating FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY OF THIS WONDERFUL THEATRE Dickinson, TNG Engineering, Bury & Knight and HWB the devastating impact the COVID-19 pandemic is having Chartered Accountants for their continuing support. across the world and our thoughts remain with those who are grieving. For the theatre industry in the UK the impact is severe and, with the prospect of prolonged social distancing, theatres will be one of the last industries to reopen. We have undertaken extensive financial planning to cover a variety of scenarios including a full year closure of Mayflower Theatre. We are fortunate that we have entered this extended period of closure with a general reserve of £6.9million and total cash holdings of £14.35million. This includes £10.86million in advanced ticket sales which are ring-fenced to protect our customers. Our worst case scenario planning sees a potential deficit for the 2020/21 financial year of £3.5million. Our executive team continue to identify further steps to reduce this negative impact. My board and I are supportive of the measures being taken and, combined with a promising programme already in place for 2021/22, we are confident of protecting the longer term financial sustainability of this wonderful theatre. That confidence is reflected in the Company, subsequent to the year end, acquiring the assets of Nuffield Southampton Theatres, which will enable us to continue and expand our community and youth projects as well as presenting a more diverse programme for our public. 02 03 Mayflower Theatre ANNUAL REPORT 2019–2020 Chief Executive’s TOTAL ATTENDANCE OF Artistic Report 524,076 We were pleased to continue Having committed to developing our dance programme, Our association with Welsh National Opera saw a season to develop our artistic vision. we presented the sensational Acosta Danza’s Evolution for featuring The Magic Flute, Roberto Devereux in the spring 2 performances, Some Like It Hip Hop for 3 performances and Carmen, Rigoletto and The Cunning Little Vixen in This ensures that there is a and Mark Morris Dance: Pepperland for 2 performances. the autumn. diversity in our programme as In this year we consolidated our Associate Companies We presented a variety of new touring shows including we continue to meet our strategic Scheme with visits from Northern Ballet, English National Kinky Boots, Motown the Musical, Club Tropicana, aims by presenting the very best Ballet (ENB) and Birmingham Royal Ballet (BRB). • The Seven Ages of Musical Theatre: the Life Cycle of the Child Performer
UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON The Seven Ages of Musical Theatre: The life cycle of the child performer by Lyndsay Barnbrook A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Humanities Faculty School of Music April 2016 \A person's a person, no matter how small." Dr. Seuss UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON Abstract Humanities Faculty School of Music Doctor of Philosophy The Seven Ages of Musical Theatre: The life cycle of the child performer by Lyndsay Barnbrook The purpose of the research reported here is to explore the part played by children in musical theatre. It aims to do this on two levels. It presents, for the first time, an historical analysis of involvement of children in theatre from its earliest beginnings to the current date. It is clear from this analysis that the role children played in the evolution of theatre has been both substantial and influential, with evidence of a number of recurring themes. Children have invariably made strong contributions in terms of music, dance and spectacle, and have been especially prominent in musical comedy. Playwrights have exploited precocity for comedic purposes, innocence to deliver difficult political messages in a way that is deemed acceptable by theatre audiences, and youth, recognising the emotional leverage to be obtained by appealing to more primitive instincts, notably sentimentality and, more contentiously, prurience. Every age has had its child prodigies and it is they who tend to make the headlines. However the influence of educators and entrepreneurs, artistically and commercially, is often underestimated. Although figures such as Wescott, Henslowe and Harris have been recognised by historians, some of the more recent architects of musical theatre, like Noreen Bush, are largely unheard of outside the theatre community.

  • Towards an International City of Culture
Towards an International City of Culture Southampton City Council Arts and Heritage Strategic Vision Executive Summary This Strategic Vision defines Southampton City Council’s strategic role regarding Arts and Heritage provision within the wider context of the City of Southampton Strategy towards 2026, council priorities, the Southampton Heritage and Arts People initiative (SHAPe), and the sub-regional Partnership for Urban South Hampshire (PUSH). Southampton is a thriving and growing city with a diverse and dynamic population. However, these developments are in pockets and other parts of the city (economically, physically, socially) remain significantly deprived. We want to transform Southampton from being a gateway to a place of destination where people want to visit, put down roots and engage in community. The City has a fantastic opportunity over the next twenty years to transform its cultural offer and create an overall vibrant cultural soul, a sense of identity and uniqueness that connects people to each other and to Southampton as place. Its rich cultural makeup, internationally important heritage story and nationally dynamic arts and creative scene provide an inspirational resource for exploitation. The significance of Southampton within the Partnership for Urban South Hampshire (PUSH) regional development area will ensure that this potential can be realised particularly within the context of Living Places. Culture is critical to Southampton’s economic development, health and wellbeing and the creation of an attractive image of the city as a place in which people want to live, work and play. Without a vibrant cultural soul, Southampton becomes a divided, anonymous, modern and transient settlement with little civic pride or unique sense of place, and without an attractive, sustainable and stimulating environment that people value.

  • Southampton's Mayflower 400 Programme
Southampton’s Mayflower 400 Programme Mayflower 400 in Southampton “Southampton City Council sees the Mayflower anniversary as an opportunity to work with communities to creatively explore self-identity, migration and transmigration, to celebrate the people of the world, such as the Mayflower passengers, who throughout history have come to, or through, Southampton in search of a new life, helping build our enviable reputation as Gateway to the World.” This year marks the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower and her sister ship, The Speedwell, leaving Southampton for the New World. A national compact has been agreed to deliver a year of events to mark the anniversary, with Plymouth appointed the lead for the UK. The programme will link four nations, 12 destinations, and millions of people through a series of arts, heritage, community and sporting events. Southampton’s Mayflower 400 programme is designed to help the City deliver its cultural ambitions through exciting arts projects, creative exploration of the City’s heritage, and engagement with communities and young people. Throughout 2020, there will be numerous arts, community, education and heritage projects that aim to support greater understanding of the Mayflower story, and Southampton’s role in that. The programme will focus on the City’s wider and long history as a place of journeys, migration and sanctuary, with the aim of reconnecting young people and communities to their maritime past, building greater cross-cultural understanding and bringing communities together. Southampton is a vibrant and diverse city with a strong cultural heritage. National evidence shows that when culture is truly part of the mix it contributes to delivering sustainable economic, social, health and wellbeing outcomes to create a resilient and thriving city.
