Roberta Cristina Neves O Ícone Raoni: Líder Indígena ROBERTA CRISTINA NEVES O ÍCONE RAONI: LÍDER INDÍGENA MEBÊNGÔKRE NO CENÁRIO GLOBAL CAMPINAS 2014 i ii iii iv v vi RESUMO O líder indígena Mebêngôkre (Kayapó) Ropni Metyktire, mais conhecido como Raoni, é, há décadas, considerado um ícone, no cenário nacional e internacional, da reivindicação pelos direitos indígenas, da resistência contra a violação de tais direitos e da luta pela preservação das florestas. Raoni teve uma participação fundamental em diversos episódios da história indígena e sua imagem é bastante difundida, estampando campanhas, homenagens e matérias midiáticas, o que confirma o seu caráter emblemático. Tendo isso em vista, a presente dissertação objetiva realizar um mapeamento da trajetória desse importante líder, bem como refletir acerca dos elementos subjacentes à repercussão por ele adquirida, dialogando, para tanto, com a questão das representações históricas sobre os povos indígenas. Palavras-chave: Metyktire, Raoni, 1930-; Etnologia; Índios Kayapo; Índios da América do Sul - Brasil. vii viii ABSTRACT Better known as Raoni, the indigenous leader Mebêngôkre (Kayapó) Ropni Metyktire is, for decades, considered an icon, in national and international scene, the claim by the indigenous rights, the resistance against the violation of such rights and the struggle to preserve forests. Raoni had key role in several episodes of Indian history and his image is quite widespride, stamping campaigns, tributes and media materials, which confirms his emblematic character. Keeping this in view, the presente study aims to map the trajectory of this importante leader as well as reflect on the underlying elements to the impact he had acquired and dialogue, therefore, the issue of the historical representations of indigenous peoples. Agradeço por compartilharem conosco, no curto período em que ficamos em campo, um pouco de seus conhecimentos, vivências e preocupações. xiv APRESENTAÇÃO O líder indígena Mebêngôkre (Kayapó) Ropni Metyktire, celebrizado como Raoni, é mundialmente conhecido como um ícone da reivindicação pelos direitos indígenas, da resistência contra a violação de tais direitos e da defesa das florestas. Seus feitos e trajetória foram e ainda são tematizados em filmes, biografias, sites e blogs. Além disso, trata-se de uma figura emblemática também na mídia em geral, sobretudo em alguns contextos específicos, como o atual no qual se observa uma intensa mobilização contrária à construção da usina hidrelétrica de Belo Monte, a qual afetará negativamente o modo de vida de vários povos indígenas e de ribeirinhos, causando diversos problemas socioambientais1. Não há, entretanto, uma representação única, nesses diferentes meios citados, dessa importante liderança, assim como são produzidas e veiculadas representações contrastantes dos povos indígenas, os quais – a despeito da enorme diversidade existente entre as mais de 200 populações que habitam o território brasileiro – são frequentemente retratados de maneira genérica. É possível afirmar que as referidas representações oscilam, embora com nuances, entre os estereótipos do “bom” e do “mau” selvagem, entre o índio edênico

Obstinado e insubmisso, esse chefe carismático leva há 4 décadas uma verdadeira cruzada para tentar salvar a floresta amazônica que o viu nascer. Pai fundador do movimento para preservação das últimas florestas tropicais, patrimônio inestimável da humanidade, ele arriscou muitas vezes sua vida por essa nobre causa. Para além da Amazônia, Raoni representa o símbolo vivo da luta levada pelas últimas tribos do mundo para proteger uma cultura milenar, em conexão direta com a natureza: uma luta pela vida. Centenas de gerações separam nossa época dos usos e costumes dessas populações ameaçadas. Raoni atravessou esse abismo imenso durante uma única existência, conservando estoicismo e dignidade. Encontrou-se com os grandes deste mundo, mas vive em uma cabana simples e nada possui. Ninguém sabe com precisão qual foi o dia em que veio ao mundo. Foi provavelmente no inicio dos anos 1930, talvez em 1932. O que sabemos, contudo é que ele nasceu num vilarejo chamado Krajmopyjakare, lugar que hoje se chama Kapôt, no coração do Mato Grosso... Sendo os Caiapós nômades, sua infância foi marcada por deslocações incessantes. Com a idade de 15 anos, Raoni guiado por seu irmão Motibau, começou a instalar seu labret, adorno portado sobre o lábio inferior, marca de reconhecimento dos guerreiros prontos a morrer por sua terra. O tamanho do labret aumenta pouco a pouco atingindo o tamanho final depois de 4 meses.

Brazilian filmmaker and activist Andre D’Elia uses his eco-doc Belo Monte: An Announcement of War, released in 2012, to fight the Belo Monte hydroelectric dam being constructed on the Xingu River in the eastern part of the Brazilian Amazon. This article examines how D’Elia highlights the multifaceted effects of the dam, from deforestation to prostitution to frame Belo Monte as an environmental, economic, and social issue in order to forge a middle ground upon which multiple interest groups can unite. I first discuss how filmmakers can use film to construct realities that break down barriers to action. Second, I explore D’Elia’s framing of the Belo Monte against Robert and Thanos’ four criteria for global investment in a cause to show how modern activists can use film to help generate transnational action. The criteria are the type of developer, the amount of political and legal space protesters have to maneuver, the economic situation of the country, and the ways in which citizens at home and abroad respond to the struggle. Though watching a film does not necessarily generate action, it does provide viewers with a frame, crafted by the filmmaker, to understand the issue. The frame is crucial because the discursive language it fosters shapes the viewer’s understanding and therefore actions taken in relation to the issue.

It finds that the Amazonian countries pursue development policies in the region based on the exploitation on an industrial scale of natural and non-renewable resources that have caused and continue to cause deforestation, loss of biodiversity and engender human rights violations in particular affecting indigenous peoples. The analysis acknowledges the measures taken by the Amazonian countries to establish protected areas and support indigenous territories and their rights but concludes that the laws need strengthening and effective enforcement. The analysis argues that the protection of the Amazon biome is an essential part of the global efforts to reduce greenhouse gases and concurs with the view of some scientists that there is an urgency to stop forest loss. The analysis further notes that the most effective guardians of the Amazonian forest and its biodiversity are its indigenous peoples. The analysis concludes by arguing that the European Union has an interest in contributing to the protection of the Amazon and its indigenous peoples. It recommends, among other things, that the EU strengthen its direct support to Amazonian indigenous peoples and environmental defenders and develop effective measures which target EU-based companies whose activities cause deforestation.

At the United Nations General Assembly, Brazil’s Jair Bolsonaro opened the proceedings with the rather bizarre comment that the Amazon – which has been on fire for weeks – is ‘practically untouched’ and that a ‘lying and sensationalist media’ Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research - 1 / 7 - 07.08.2021 2 had been fanning the flames of fake news. The Amazon, 60% of which is inside Brazil, is not – Bolsonaro said – the ‘heritage of humankind’. It is Brazilian territory, he said, and if Brazil wants to cut it down, then so be it. Following Bolsonaro, Trump made some incoherent remarks at the UN about sovereignty and patriotism. While he claimed that he was a nationalist who stood for the sovereignty of nations, Trump openly threatened Iran and Venezuela with war. Their sovereignty was of no consequence to Trump.
