  • Country Iioijs1 of Greater Mancheste
COUNTRY IIOIJS1 OF GREATER MANCHESTE * P .•» I COUNTRY HOUSES OF GREATER MANCHESTER EDITORS :J.S.F. WALKER & A.S.TINDALL (;itiL\n<it MANCHESTER ARCHAEOLOGICAL UNIT 1985 osi CHAIRMAN'S STATEMENT The country house is part of the diverse and rich heritage of Greater Manchester. This volume follows the development of the country house from the Middle Ages to the present day, using a combination of .archaeological excavation, documentary research and survey to present a coherent study of a building type which reflects the social and economic development of the community in a singularly direct way. By their survival they .demonstrate the entrepreneurial skills of the owner and the abilities of those artisans who built and maintained them. The form and function of the country house change over the centuries, and the fabric of individual buildings mirrors these changes and encapsulates much of the history of the time. Many of our country houses are in good hands, well maintained and with a secure future. Many others described in this volume are already lost, and even the land upon which they stood has been so disturbed as to allow no further site investigation. Their loss, in many cases, was inevitable but I hope that this publication will create an awareness that others, too valuable to be allowed to disappear, are at risk. The protection and refurbishment of old buildings is costly, but I am confident that present conservation policies, allied with improving public and private attitudes towards preservation, have created a strong body of opinion in favour of the constructive re-use of the best of those which survive.

  • Chapter III Tudor Rochdale
Chapter Three TUDOR ROCHDALE : 1485-1603 THE MANOR AND THE BYRONS . FTER the death of Sir Nicholas Byron in 1504 there were five successive John Byrons, all of whom were eventually knighted . The first Sir John had a bastard son by Elizabeth Halgh of A Moston, whom he afterwards married, dying in 1567 .1 This Lady Elizabeth, now twice widowed, survived him by some thirteen years ; her personal possessions reveal her as a fashionable and practical lady, with a red petticoat, a kirtle of velvet with a purple satin forepart, a gorget of taffeta at her throat, and a gown of damask, furred with lamb . Both her husband and her son lived at Royton Hall ; perhaps she rode there in her grey mantle, on her horse with a velvet-covered lady's saddle . As was usual, she drank beer, and also owned a spinning-wheel, worth Is . l0d . Her husband's stewardship of the Manor was one long battle to enclose and encroach on land-then greatly in demand for sheep-grazing and the supply of wool . According to a copy of a certificate dated 1519-20, he enclosed part of Buersill common with a dyke, but this was " in peaceable manner " cast down again by certain women and children . Some time before 1552 he set up boundary stones well within the Crompton district .2 (One of these massive stones still stands near the hawthorn lane which leads from Snipe Leach to Moorgate West Farm and to Broad Lane . During recent perambulations of the boundaries it has been the custom to climb over the Moorgate Farm roof, since a through door has been stopped up) .

Chapter Six TOWARDS A MUNICIPAL BOROUGH : 1800-1856 A POET SELLS THE MANOR . EORGE GORDON BYRON, sixth Baron Byron of Rochdale, was the last of his family to be Lord of the Rochdale Manor. ; It is well known that he spent much of his time abroad ; in 1810, G aged 22, he swam the Hellespont, in 1822 he attended at Rome the funeral of the drowned Shelley ; it was in the same year, from Genoa, that Byron wrote to James Dearden regarding the thirty-year-old lawsuit over the Rochdale manorial rights and coal mines : " Sir, You and I have now been eighteen years at law with various success . Of the original occasion of this suit I have no great knowledge, since I inherited it and was a child when it began, and for ought I know may arrive at second childhood before it terminates ." He continues, "a mode might be found of combining . the adjustment of our lawsuit and the sale of the remainder of the manor . ", having already mentioned his thoughts of settling permanently in Italy or elsewhere, but, in fact, he had inherited encumbered estates and his own extravagances led him into further debts . In another letter, once in the possession of Mr . A. 3 . Law, he wrote " If we must sell, sell Rochdale ." In 1823 the Manor was sold to James Dear- den, whose house " The Orchard," north of the river and almost opposite that older house " The Wood," became known as " The Manor House ." It would be pleasant to think that Byron, as had been reported, actually stood at the top of the Church Steps and said " Fair breaks the morn o'er the distant hills," but it is difficult enough to establish that he ever came to Rochdale.

  • Walking Grades WHAT's ON
#TfGMWalking Want to walk more? We have hundreds of free guided walks in May to help you make a start. Chris, Liz and Brian did it. You can too. Find their stories inside. This May sees Greater Manchester welcome its annual, month-long festival of walking and we’re inviting everyone in Greater Manchester to walk with us. For the past four years, more and more people have been using led walks as the inspiration to start leading a more active life; to get their kids spending more time outdoors; to meet up with old friends and, in many cases, to make new ones! In this magazine, you can read the stories of people just like you who, having realised how easy and enjoyable walking is, have made it their first choice for local trips. Read about their inspiration for walking, how it has changed the way they get around and their advice on how to get started. Some great walking environments already exist across the 10 districts of Greater Manchester but there is much work to do to ensure that our streets and public spaces are accessible to all, especially the partially sighted, a parent with a buggy and wheelchair users. In March 2018, we announced a £160 million investment in walking and cycling infrastructure. This is the biggest single investment in cycling and walking in the region to date.
